The author believes his work is not a dupli cation of any other. Not too much, but too little has been written about Iowa. The people of this state have been neglectful of their own history. Even in their schools they have taught the history of every land except their own. On one occasion the author interrogated four college girls, senior class students in a university, and was surprised to find that not one of them had a distinct idea of who James W. Grimes was. They had heard of Samuel J. Kirkwood, largely through the fact that Mrs. Jane Kirkwood, the widow of the war governor, was still living in Iowa City. They knew much about the Sabine women, but very little about their own great-grandmothers who had crossed the Mississippi in 1833, and in the years following. They knew what Curtius did in the Roman Forum, but they were wholly ignorant about the Iowa hero who held a fort while General Sherman signalled I am coming. And yet the lessons derived from human experience might have been garnered from Iowa history as well as from Roman. Here is an area of 56,000 square miles, lying between the upper Mississippi and the Missouri, over which for centuries there roamed the savage descendants, or conquerors, of an ancient civilization, - mere nomads with only a traditional past and without thought of the future beyond provision for their immediate necessities and the treasuring of tribal hatred and revenges. The Indian preemptors of this region hunted and fished and fought and died and left behind then? a scarcely more authentic memorial of their existence than we have of their contemporaries, the elk and the buffalo. But for the oncoming of the while man, Iowa would today be little if any further advanced toward the dreams and ideals of a world-civilization than it was in that far-off summer of 1673, when the pioneer priest and the intrepid explorer, floating down the Wisconsin and out into the Mississippi, feasted their vision on "the beautiful land." The superficial Chesterfield saw in history "only a confused heap of facts"; but the thoughtful student of history cannot fail to find that the social and political movements of his own time have sprung from roots deeply buried in the past. The greatest fact in history is the Great Man - the man in whom are happily combined broad vision, well-directed purpose, forceful yet tactful initiative, and unabating industry. Regarded from this viewpoint. Iowa has been fortunate in her history. The first white man known to have set foot upon her soil was a missionary imbued with a great purpose; and piloting him was a voyageur with an absorbing passion for discovery. Adventurers floated past her eastern boundary but saw no promise in mere land, however fertile it might prove to be. Fur traders penetrated her inland streams but remained no longer than was necessary to possess the treasures of the chase. Then came the soldier-explorers, investigators, and defenders of savage weakness against savage strength, - Kearny. Albert Lea, Fremont, Street, and Allen, who separately invaded the interior, not to destroy and lay waste, but to conserve, to build up. And under this treatment it is proposed to study the town in a two-fold aspect: as an organ of the state performing the functions of a capital, and as an organism illustrating the Character, manners and customs of pioneer life in Iowa. The period covered in these pages extends from the found ing of Iowa City in the year 1839 to the final removal of the capital to Des Moines in the year 1857. No previous attempt having been made to write the history of Iowa City, this monograph is necessarily the result of original investigation. Book excerpt: Excerpt from History of Adair County, Iowa, and Its People, Vol. 1 On March 3, 1805, Iowa was included as a part of the Territory of Louisiana, with the capital at St. Louis, and that part of the Louisiana Purchase now known as Louisiana became Orleans Terri tory. The Territory of Missouri was organized June 4, 1812, and Iowa was embraced in it. When Missouri became a state in 1820, Iowa, with other territory, was detached and forgotten and remained a country without a government, either political or judicial, until June 28, 1834, when the 'abuses of outlawry and crime became so prominent and serious that, as a means of redress and correction it was included in the Territory of Michigan. During all these vears it is probable that the only civil law in force in Iowa was the pro vision of the Missouri act which prohibited slavery and involuntary servitude in the territories of the United States north of thirty-six degrees, thirty minutes, north latitude. By 1836 the population of this region had so increased that the territorial government of Wisconsin was organized, which at first included a part of the upper peninsula of Michigan, the whole of Minnesota and Iowa, and that part of Dakota lying east of the Mis souri and White Earth rivers. When the Territory of Iowa was organized, July 12, 1838, it included the present State of Minnesota and parts of North and South Dakota.
