Book excerpt: Excerpt from A History of the Negro Baptists of North Carolina We have already said that questions of discipline were almost exclusively left to the white people, but in some instances fairness was shown to the colored brother, and his side received the proper considera tion. We record a single instance of this kind. A conflict ensued between a white brother and a colored sister. When the white brother was heard a motion at once was made to exclude the colored sister without hearing her side, but others insisted and it afterward prevailed to hear her side; and when they had heard her side she was justified and allowed to retain her membership. Notwithstanding there were many obstacles which stood in the way of the religious growth and develop ment of the colored people before the war, there were many devoted Christians among them. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The writer of this little book has fulfilled a long cherished desire, not in its best sense to say a history, but to lay some kind of foundation, so that the historian of the future may have something to build upon and may someday give to the world the facts concerning the service, sacrifice and achievements of the Negro Baptists of North Carolina. While the difficulty in obtaining information at times has caused discouragement and delay, the writer has never engaged in any task which has brought to him so much satisfaction and pleasure, and he will feel amply repaid if the readers find half so much pleasure and profit in the reading. The writer, too, expresses the hope when some other shall undertake to build on this foundation it will not be so difficult to obtain the necessary information. To all who have responded and have furnished data for this book the writer wishes to express his grateful acknowledgment.

This book was released on 2017-11-13 with total page 230 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A History of the Baptists in North Carolina Our purpose in producing the following pages is to put in readable form the deeds of our Baptist fathers in the Old North State. To write the history of the North Carolina Baptists is to tread on virgin soil. The task has never been undertaken before, so far as the author knows. Consequently, we do not claim perfection in details of Baptist history in North Carolina. The records were only partially kept in the early days, so that much of the real history of North Carolina Baptists has never been committed to paper. Taking into consideration the lack of information in some places and superabundance of it in others, we have tried to make a connected history, dealing with all characters and events with an impartial pen. Many heroes have not a place in this narrative, ' because scarcely anything-has been preserved from their lives of heroism. Download or read book Who s Who Among North Carolina Negro Baptists written by M. W. Williams and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-05-02 with total page 406 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Who's Who Among North Carolina Negro Baptists: With a Brief History of Negro Baptist Organizations, With Many Photographs The collaborating editors are combining with the work of the present generation the heroic achievements of those rugged pioneers of the faith who before and immediately after the Civil War founded and nourished the Baptist cause in its infancy among the Negro people of North Carolina. This fact adds much to the value of this book, because it places in the hands of the Baptist a much-needed record of the work of the fathers - many of whom have been forgotten or'were never heard of by the younger mem bers of our denomination. Another fact which makes this book of vital im portance, is that it contains a short history of the various Baptist State organizations, District Associations, Sunday Schools, B. T. U. Conventions, and women's organizations. This gives the reader information concerning the founding and development of these bodies, so that under one cover the reader may have a brief history of the beginning and progress of the Negro Baptists of North Carolina and short sketches of some of the lives of the men and women who are the leaders of this great work. Book excerpt: Excerpt from From a Mustard Seed: A History of the First Baptist Church, Hamlet, North Carolina Records in the Register of Deeds office in the Richmond County Courthouse in Rock-ingham, North Carolina were very helpful. I wish to thank Mrs. Agnes Carroll and her co-workers, especially Miss Nichols, for assisting me in finding many interesting documents. The search for pictures of former pastors was most time consuming, but I am pleased that pictures of all pastors except the first, Rev. Thomas Benjamin Newberry, were eventually obtained. Many of these pictures came from old newspaper clippings made available through the cooperation of Miss Effie Ormsby of Effie's Studio. I am grateful to her not only for her superb work but also for the generous and unselfish giving of her time. Through contacts of members of former preachers' families and friends, the sketches of their lives were secured. I gratefully acknowledge this help and give the source of information on each pastor.
