CHAPTER X THE STATION ABANDONED AND THE JOURNEY FROM WHITE RIVER TO BETHLEHEM The little congregation had dwindled down to but two Indian members, Theresa and Hannah, of whom the former continued faithful to the end, while Hannah seemed to think more of the honor of the heathen than the honor of God. Not having an interpreter since the cruel death of Joshua, the work of preaching the gospel was necessarily hampered. Nevertheless, the missionaries kept up the regular Sunday services until they left, even though the number of hearers was for the most part limited to the scriptural two or three gathered in the name of the Lord. During the early part of August, definite word was received from Bethlehem that they might leave the White River. In answer to this official communication, Brother Kluge wrote: "Your letters of the twenty-first of May and twenty-ninth of June reached us at the same time. They came on the second of August, to our great joy and comfort, through Brother Luckenbach. I want to thank you most heartily, brethren of the Helpers' Conference, for your tender interest, your paternal care and faithfulness in our sorrowful condition. In your letter of the twenty-first of May, I learn that, under the guidance of the dear Saviour, our mission is given up for the time being, and that we shall leave the White River as soon as possible and move to Cincinnati, where Mr. Ziegler will look after our wants. We heartily wish that this might have taken place. But since Mr. Ziegler could not carry out your wishes, because, as he says, he had neither quarters for us nor a man with whom to send your letter, we are still at our old place, where we received your communication. The Moravians remained among the Cherokees for more than thirty years, longer than any other Christian group. John and Anna Rosina Gambold served at the mission from 1805 until Anna's death in 1821. Anna, the principal author of the diaries, chronicles the intimate details of Cherokee daily life for seventeen years. Anna describes mission life and what she heard and saw at Springplace: food preparation and consumption, transactions pertaining to land, Cherokee body ornaments, conjuring, Cherokee law and punishment, Green Corn ceremonies, ball play, and matriarchal and marriage traditions. Histories of the labors of the Moravians among the northern tribes in the United States and Canada have been written, and _it is fitting that this story Of the Moravian missions among southern Indian tribes of the United States should be added, a history which has never before been written, except in outline. This mission, also, is a finished work of the Church, and, from that viewpoint, de serves to be written and read. This story forms part of the early history of Wachovia, the Moravian settlement in North Carolina, which, in turn, is one of the main chapters in the history of that State. The primary work of the Church of Christ is the spreading Of His Gospel. Methods do and should change; people change; times change. Fifty years ago, the farmer plowed his field with an Old-fashioned plow, drawn by a team Of horses or a yoke of oxen. He reaped the grain with a cradle, bound it by hand, and separated the grain from the chaff with a flail. The grain was ground between two millstones, and then the dough was baked in the fireplace. The result of this difficult process was bread. Today, the farmer plows with a tractor, reaps his grain with a binder, threshes the wheat in a modern threshing machine, has it ground in a modern mill, and the housewife bakes it in an electric range. But note again, the result of this new process is bread. Thus, spiritual truth abides unchanged and man's need of this Bread of Life is exactly the same as ever it has been. This work, therefore, is not a mere recital Of the past, but lays claim to be an inspiration for the present and the future. What the Cherokee and the Creek needed was the Gospel; what every human heart today needs is the Gospel; the same Gospel in both cases - there is but one Gospel - the Grace of God in Christ for all men. The composition Of this work has been extended over several years, the most laborious part being the translating of the Diary and correspondence Of the mission through the many years dur ing which these were written in the German. The increasing demands of a busy city pastorate crowded this work into the hours Of the night, when, in the quiet, it seemed as if the scenes of the history which follows were being re-enacted. The writer asks considerate judgment because the work could never occupy the main line of thought, time or strength. The State of Georgia and the United States press forward toward their common goal, Georgia for white citizens only and America east of the Mississippi swept clean of Indians. After years of negotiations, treaties, enactments, and lawsuits, the Treaty of New Echota, signed late December 1835 by a handful of Cherokee head men, seals the fate of the Cherokee Nation east of the Mississippi. The Cherokees are now a homeless people in their ancient homeland. And the Moravian Church's missionaries, through mission diaries, reports, and letters, record the events as they hear, read, and eyewitness them, "heart freezing scenes of injustice, deception, oppression, & force, of which this Nation is the victim," missionary Henry Clauder writes April 1837. As forced removal increases, "forts" are built to hold up to 200 Indians each, even at the Moravians' beloved Springplace mission. Herded into the forts like cattle, many succumb to camp diseases. As the deadline for departure approaches, John Ross, president of the Cherokee Nation, wins a concession from the Army's Gen. Winfield Scott. Instead of soldiers, Cherokees will conduct the 13 "detachments" of about 1,000 Indians each. And the Moravian missionaries make their own hard decision. With winter coming on, they depart on the 800-mile journey to Arkansas before Br. George Hicks can start his detachment with a number of Moravian mission families.
