Book A History of the Modern Jews Or Annals of the Hebrew Race 1860

Download or read book A History of the Modern Jews Or Annals of the Hebrew Race 1860 written by Samuel M. Smucker and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2015-06-17 with total page 356 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A History of the Modern Jews; Or Annals of the Hebrew Race, 1860: From the Destruction of Jerusalem to the Present Time The following work treats of a subject which is not only important in itself, but possesses attractions for the general reader. The Jewish people are more remarkable in some respects than any other which have ever existed. They are the oldest of the races, so far as a direct line of historical descent is concerned, which now nourish upon the globe; for they may trace their genealogy back by an unbroken line to Abraham. Neither the cultivated Greeks nor the martial Romans, in ancient times, were as venerable as the cotemporary Jews; yet these have passed away, while the Hebrews remain. The various races which are now most potent and prominent in the world, - the British, the French, the German, - have all risen into existence, as distinct communities, many ages after the Israelites had attained a world-wide celebrity. Nor has the past career of the Jews been insignificant in respect to historical importance. They have endured countless persecutions, under which any other people would have vanished, and become extinct. They still survive, and flourish at this late day, invested with such vitality and energy, that they are a clearly felt and recognized power in the commercial, social, and intellectual life of every community among whom they sojourn. The consideration of the history, and vicissitudes of such a people, cannot fail to interest every reader who desires to take a comprehensive survey of the various aspects assumed by humanity, during its past diversified and chequered career. Book Theodor Herzl

Download or read book Theodor Herzl written by Derek Jonathan Penslar and published by Yale University Press. This book was released on 2020-02-18 with total page 253 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From the prizewinning Jewish Lives series, a masterful new biography of Theodor Herzl by an eminent historian of Zionism "An excellent, concise biography of Theodor Herzl, architect of modern Zionism. . . . An exceptionally good, highly readable volume."--Publishers Weekly, starred review "An engrossing account of a leader who, by converting despair into strength, gave an exiled people both political purpose and the means to attain it."--Benjamin Balint, Wall Street Journal The life of Theodor Herzl (1860-1904) was as puzzling as it was brief. How did this cosmopolitan and assimilated European Jew become the leader of the Zionist movement? How could he be both an artist and a statesman, a rationalist and an aesthete, a stern moralist yet possessed of deep, and at times dark, passions? And why did scores of thousands of Jews, many of them from traditional, observant backgrounds, embrace Herzl as their leader? Drawing on a vast body of Herzl's personal, literary, and political writings, historian Derek Penslar shows that Herzl's path to Zionism had as much to do with personal crises as it did with antisemitism. Once Herzl devoted himself to Zionism, Penslar shows, he distinguished himself as a consummate leader--possessed of indefatigable energy, organizational ability, and electrifying charisma. Herzl became a screen onto which Jews of his era could project their deepest needs and longings. About Jewish Lives: Jewish Lives is a prizewinning series of interpretative biography designed to explore the many facets of Jewish identity. Individual volumes illuminate the imprint of Jewish figures upon literature, religion, philosophy, politics, cultural and economic life, and the arts and sciences. Subjects are paired with authors to elicit lively, deeply informed books that explore the range and depth of the Jewish experience from antiquity to the present. In 2014, the Jewish Book Council named Jewish Lives the winner of its Jewish Book of the Year Award, the first series ever to receive this award. More praise for Jewish Lives: "Excellent." - New York times "Exemplary." - Wall St. Journal "Distinguished." - New Yorker "Superb." - The Guardian

Download or read book French Jews Turkish Jews written by Aron Rodrigue and published by Indiana University Press. This book was released on 1990-09-22 with total page 262 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Alliance Israélite Universelle, a French-Jewish organization founded in 1860, occupies a crucial place in the history of Sephardi communities in the modern period. In the fifty years after its creation, the Alliance established a vast network of schools in the lands of Islam for the purpose of "civilizing" the local Jewish communities and remaking them in the idealized self-image of French Jewry. This study, drawing on the author's extensive research in the archives of the Alliance in Paris, focuses on the work of the Alliance among Turkish Jewry, one of the communities most strongly affected by the organizations' activities. Although the Alliance played a conclusive role in the Westernization of Turkish Jews, it was also the unwitting catalyst for the emrgence of new political movements such as Zionism, which turned away from the Alliance's ideology and ultimately threatened the survival of its schools. This book illuminates an important episode in the history of Sephardi and French Jewries as they interacted through the Alliance Israélite Universelle and draws important conclusions about the transformation of European as well as Middle Eastern Jewries in the modern era.
