Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is a reprint of J. Taylor Hamilton's "A History of the Moravian Church." The Moravian Church, formally named the Unitas Fratrum (Latin for the "Unity of the Brethren"), in German known as [Herrnhuter] Brdergemeine (meaning "Brethren's Congregation from Herrnhut", the place of the Church's renewal in the 18th century), is one of the oldest Protestant denominations in the world, with its heritage dating back to the Bohemian Reformation in the fifteenth century and the Unity of the Brethren (Jednota bratrsk in Czech) established in the Kingdom of Bohemia. The name by which the Church is commonly known comes from the original exiles who fled to Saxony in 1722 from Moravia to escape religious persecution, but its heritage began in 1457 in Bohemia and its crown lands (Moravia and Silesia), then an autonomous kingdom within the Holy Roman Empire (today the Czech Republic). The modern Unitas Fratrum, with about 750,000 members worldwide, continues to draw on traditions established during the eighteenth century. The Moravians continue their long tradition of missionary work, for example in the Caribbean. This is reflected in their broad global distribution. The Church places a high value on ecumenism, personal piety, missions and music. The Church's emblem is the Lamb of God (Agnus Dei) with the flag of victory, surrounded by the Latin inscription: Vicit agnus noster, eum sequamur (English: "Our Lamb has conquered, let us follow Him").

This book was released on 2017-10-14 with total page 162 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is an original reprinting of the official Moravian missions history with new maps detailing their numerous missionary journeys. This printing is the first of three volumes, and covers the initial years of Moravian missions. Get beyond the myth and pulpit folklore about the Moravians and see what God really did in using this group of believers to bring the Gospel to unreached people groups around the world in the 17th and 18th centuries. This band of refugees, displaced by Catholic persecutions in their own land, found safety with the benevolent Count Zinzendorf in Herrnhut, Germany. After the group experienced a true Holy Spirit revival, Count Zinzendorf found in them a zealous band of dedicated missionaries that carried the Gospel across the world while those back home maintained an unbroken, 24/7 prayer meeting for a hundred years. Just as remarkable is that the Moravians went out with no steady financial support. They were 'tentmakers' in most places they went to enable the rapid spread of workers without reliance on a large home financial support network. The Moravians are among the most significant, and least known, influencers of the modern missions movement that began in the 1700s and continues to today. John Wesley, founder of the Methodist church, witnessed the Moravians during his fateful voyage across the Atlantic, later attributing Moravian influence to his own conversion. William Carey, considered the father of modern missions and a pioneer in bringing the Gospel to India, attributed his initial impetus for missions after reading about the activity of the Moravians. How did God use a band of largely uneducated craftsman and farmers to reach the world? You should read this definitive history of the Moravians to find out!

Book The Music of the Moravian Church in America

Download or read book The Music of the Moravian Church in America written by Nola Reed Knouse and published by University Rochester Press. This book was released on 2008 with total page 374 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Moravians, or Bohemian Brethren, early Protestants who settled in Pennsylvania and North Carolina in the eighteenth century, brought a musical repertoire that included hymns, sacred vocal works accompanied by chamber orchestra, and instrumental music by the best-known European composers of the day. Moravian composers -- mostly pastors and teachers trained in the styles and genres of the Haydn-Mozart era -- crafted thousands of compositions for worship, and copied and collected thousands of instrumental works for recreation and instruction. The book's chapters examine sacred and secular works, both for instruments -- including piano solo -- and for voices. The Music of the Moravian Church demonstrates the varied roles that music played in one of America's most distinctive ethno-cultural populations, and presents many distinctive pieces that performers and audiences continue to find rewarding. Contributors: Alice M. Caldwell, C. Daniel Crews, Lou Carol Fix, Pauline M. Fox, Albert H. Frank, Nola Reed Knouse, Laurence Libin, Paul M. Peucker, and Jewel A. Smith. Nola Reed Knouse, director of the Moravian Music Foundation since 1994, is active as a flautist, composer, and arranger. She is the editor of The Collected Wind Music of David Moritz Michael.

Book Ebenezer Mission Station 1863 1873

Download or read book Ebenezer Mission Station 1863 1873 written by Felicity Jensz and published by ANU Press. This book was released on 2023-07-05 with total page 324 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book contains the annotated diary of Adolf and Mary (Polly) Hartmann, missionaries of the Moravian Church who worked at the Ebenezer mission station on Wotjobaluk country, in the north-west of the Colony of Victoria, Australia. The diary begins in 1863, as the Hartmanns are preparing to travel from Europe to take up their post, and ends in 1873, by which time they are working in Canada as missionaries to the Lenni Lenape people. Recording the Hartmann’s eight years at the Ebenezer mission, the diary presents richly detailed insights into the daily interactions between Aboriginal people and their colonisers. The inhabitants of the mission are overwhelmingly described in the diary as agents in their lives, moving in and out of the missionaries’ sphere of influence, yet restricted at times by the boundaries of the mission. The diary reveals moments of laughter, shared grief, community, advocacy and reciprocal learning, alongside the mundane everyday chores of mission life. Through the personal writings of a missionary couple, this diary brings to light the regular, routine and extraordinary events on a mission station in Australia in the third quarter of the nineteenth century—a period just prior to British high imperialism, and a period before increasingly restrictive legislation was enforced on Indigenous people in the Colony of Victoria.
