Book excerpt: Excerpt from A History of the Minories London I am aware that I may be charged with overburdening the text with quotations; but I think that in this way the idiosyncrasies of individuals and the characteristics of different ages are best portrayed. The most graphic editorial word painting is not so true a guide as contemporary writings and memoranda; even the spelling and quaint expressions have a distinct illustrative value. The original mss., in cases where I have had access to them, are transcribed Without any alteration, with the exception of those in Latin and Norman French, of which a translation is invariably given. Then further, many of the documents from which I quote (especially the Parish Records) are not likely to come to the notice even of those engaged in antiquarian research. They may, indeed, be useful only to a few; nevertheless, for the sake of those few, I have thought them as a rule worthy of being reproduced in ewtenso. Moreover, I hope there may be others who, not caring to wade through these extracts, may yet find some interest in the perusal of the general statements drawn from them. The many vicissitudes through which the precinct of the Minories has passed, during the 600 years over which this history extends, lends to it an interest peculiarly its own. The abundance of existing information bearing upon it renders it possible to trace, with considerable fulness, the various phases which each successive period presents. Although the events recorded, for the most part, took place within a very limited area, yet they may not be without some little value in illustrating the forces and in uences which, for centuries, have been at work in making the English people what they are. So numerous are the names of those, famous in their own days, who have been more or less intimately connected with the Minories, or who have been buried within the Precinct, that, with regard to many of them, it has been impossible to do more than sketch brie y the main incidents of their careers. In determining the space to be allotted to each biographical notice, I have mainly acted on the principle of dealing most brie y with those who are known to history, and the accounts of whose lives are most easily accessible to the general reader. Book excerpt: In Backstage in the Novel, Francesca Saggini traces the unique interplay between fiction and theater in the eighteenth century through an examination of the work of the English novelist, diarist, and playwright Frances Burney. Moving beyond the basic identification of affinities between the genres, Saggini establishes a literary-cultural context for Burney's work, considering the relation between drama, a long-standing tradition, and the still-emergent form of the novel. Through close semiotic analysis, intertextual comparison, and cultural contextualization, Saggini highlights the extensive metatextual discourse in Burney's novels, allowing the theater within the novels to surface. Saggini’s comparative analysis addresses, among other elements, textual structures, plots, characters, narrative discourse, and reading practices. The author explores the theatrical and spectacular elements that made the eighteenth-century novel a hybrid genre infused with dramatic conventions. She analyzes such conventions in light of contemporary theories of reception and of the role of the reader that underpinned eighteenth-century cultural consumption. In doing so, Saggini contextualizes the typical reader-spectator of Burney’s day, one who kept abreast of the latest publications and was able to move effortlessly between "high" (sentimental, dramatic) and "low" (grotesque, comedic) cultural forms that intersected on the stage. Backstage in the Novel aims to restore to Burney's entire literary corpus the dimensionality that characterized it originally. It is a vivid, close-up view of a writer who operated in a society saturated by theater and spectacle and who rendered that dramatic text into narrative. More than a study of Burney or an overview of eighteenth-century literature and theater, this book gives immediacy to an understanding of the broad forces informing, and channeled through, Burney's life and work.

Book excerpt: A reframing of how scientific knowledge was produced in the early modern world. Many accounts of the scientific revolution portray it as a time when scientists disciplined knowledge by first disciplining their own behavior. According to these views, scientists such as Francis Bacon produced certain knowledge by pacifying their emotions and concentrating on method. In The Interlopers, Vera Keller rejects this emphasis on discipline and instead argues that what distinguished early modernity was a navigation away from restraint and toward the violent blending of knowledge from across society and around the globe. Keller follows early seventeenth-century English "projectors" as they traversed the world, pursuing outrageous entrepreneurial schemes along the way. These interlopers were developing a different culture of knowledge, one that aimed to take advantage of the disorder created by the rise of science and technological advances. They sought to deploy the first submarine in the Indian Ocean, raise silkworms in Virginia, and establish the English slave trade. These projectors developed a culture of extreme risk-taking, uniting global capitalism with martial values of violent conquest. They saw the world as a riskscape of empty spaces, disposable people, and unlimited resources. By analyzing the disasters—as well as a few successes—of the interlopers she studies, Keller offers a new interpretation of the nature of early modern knowledge itself. While many influential accounts of the period characterize European modernity as a disciplining or civilizing process, The Interlopers argues that early modernity instead entailed a great undisciplining that entangled capitalism, colonialism, and science.
