Book excerpt: Excerpt from The History of the Jews IT is not frequent that an author on any Jewish subject receives the encouragement of a demand for a second edition of his book. My volume of Jewish history which is again submitted to the public, in tended primarily as a manual of instruction, is re vised chiefly by being brought up to date. This re vision became necessary owing to the great changes which the World War has produced in Central and Eastern Europe. Desiring not to enlarge the book too much, I have added merely the most important facts and names in modern Jewish history. In the chap ters dealing with the older epochs, only a few in significant additions have been made. Other changes are merely textual. It still remains for the intelligent teacher to explain the facts given in the book which, by the very nature of its intention, makes dry read ing for the uninitiated. Every history, no matter how large, is bound to be selective. My book, therefore, like every other on the subject, will be Open to criticism in regard to omissions. In the modern period especially, I have no doubt that some one will find certain names omitted, but I have conscientiously weighed the question in every instance and believe to have been impartial and to have deserved from fair-minded critics the Tal mudic compliment - that an author is to be com mended both for what he includes and for what he excludes. Consider the years of many generations: Ask thy father, and he will shew thee; Thine elders, and they will tell thee." Deut. xxxii.7. "Ye are my witnesses, saith the Lord, and my servant whom I have chosen." - Isaiah xliii. 10. "The life of man is numbered by days: The days of Israel are without number." Ecclus. xxxvii. 25. "Kingdoms arise and kingdoms pass away, but Israel endureth for evermore." - Midrash. "Man is made man by history. The Jew recognizes that he is made what he is by the history of his fathers, and feels he is losing his better self so far as he loses his hold on his past history. "The history of Israel is the great living proof of the working of Divine Providence in the affairs of the world. Alone among the nations Israel has shared in all great movements since mankind became conscious of their destinies. If there is no Divine purpose in the long travail of Israel, it is vain to seek for any such purpose in man's life. In the reflected light of that purpose each Jew should lead his life with an added dignity." - Joseph Jacobs. Book The History of the Jews From the War With Rome to the Present Time Classic Reprint

Download or read book The History of the Jews From the War With Rome to the Present Time Classic Reprint written by Henry Cadwallader Adams and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-02-02 with total page 430 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The History of the Jews, From the War With Rome to the Present Time It will, of course, be answered that to charge our Lord with blasphemy and setting up of a strange god, is simply to beg the whole question at issue between Jew and Christian. Indeed, considering that the Hebrew Scriptures distinctly declare the Messiah to be God1 (psa. Xlv. 6; Isa. Vii. I4: ix. 6, etc), according to this view of the matter, at what ever period He might come, it must be the duty of the Jews to put Him to death, as soon as He declared His true character. It might be asked-how were the Jews to know that Jesus was really what He proclaimed Himself? Our answer is, that in the fulfilment of prophecy in Him, in the exercise of His miraculous powers, and the superhuman holiness of His teaching, they had sufficient evidence that He was indeed the Christ. They had, in fact, t/ize evidence of it which Divine wisdom accounted sufficient. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book A History of the Jews in the Modern World

Download or read book A History of the Jews in the Modern World written by Howard M. Sachar and published by Vintage. This book was released on 2007-12-18 with total page 924 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The distinguished historian of the Jewish people, Howard M. Sachar, gives us a comprehensive and enthralling chronicle of the achievements and traumas of the Jews over the last four hundred years. Tracking their fate from Western Europe’s age of mercantilism in the seventeenth century to the post-Soviet and post-imperialist Islamic upheavals of the twenty-first century, Sachar applies his renowned narrative skill to the central role of the Jews in many of the most impressive achievements of modern civilization: whether in the rise of economic capitalism or of political socialism; in the discoveries of theoretical physics or applied medicine; in “higher” literary criticism or mass communication and popular entertainment. As his account unfolds and moves from epoch to epoch, from continent to continent, from Europe to the Americas and the Middle East, Sachar evaluates communities that, until lately, have been underestimated in the perspective of Jewish and world history—among them, Jews of Sephardic provenance, of the Moslem regions, and of Africa. By the same token, Sachar applies a master’s hand in describing and deciphering the Jews’ unique exposure and functional usefulness to totalitarian movements—fascist, Nazi, and Stalinist. In the process, he shines an unsparing light on the often widely dissimilar behavior of separate European peoples, and on separate Jewish populations, during the Holocaust. A distillation of the author’s lifetime of scholarly research and teaching experience, A History of the Jews in the Modern World provides a source of unsurpassed intellectual richness for university students and educated laypersons alike.
