These persecutions continued with little intermission, yet still they remained indus rions and uncomplaining, eager on every occasion to testify their loyalty and allegiance. In the last year of Henry Il.'s reign a parliament was convened at Northampton to raise supplies for an expedition to the Holy Land. The whole Christian population were assessed at while the Jews alone, in numbers but a very small fraction of the king's native subjects, were burdened with a tax of 3330 having been during this one reign already tortured from them. The abandonment of the project, followed as it was by the king's death, prevented this illegal extortion; and it was perhaps from joy at this unexpected relief that the Hebrews thronged in crowds to Westminster to witness the poro nation of Richard, sumptuously attired, and bearing rich offer ings, to testify their eager desire to conciliate the king. Book A Short History of the Jews in England Classic Reprint

Download or read book A Short History of the Jews in England Classic Reprint written by Henry Paine Stokes and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-01-31 with total page 142 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Short History of the Jews in England No modern nation has taken more interest in the Jews than the English-speaking peoples, none has tried to deal more fairly with them. Yet it cannot be pretended that we English know much about their post-biblical history, practices, and beliefs, much less that we have studied these in relation to Christianity past and present. The aim of this series is to do something towards supplying this want. It will endeavour to describe Jews as they have been and as they are, to state and explain the efforts of Christians in past centuries to win them, and the methods used, and both to set out and to weigh their chief doctrines. Thus gradually but surely a collection of handbooks will be formed, which Jews and Christians alike may use, and each learn to understand better the religion of the other. Naturally the books will be Christian, and because they are Christian will try both to represent Christianity in its proper spirit, and to exhibit it as the supreme truth. This book was released on 2015-07-10 with total page 170 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A History of the Establishment and Residence of the Jews in England: With an Enquiry Into Their Civil Disabilities Whoever has directed his thoughts to the consideration of the present state of the law, with respect to the Jews in England, must have observed that a considerable degree of doubt and uncertainty exists upon the subject. Most persons appear to entertain the opinion, that the Jews labour under some disabilities; but of their nature and extent there are, probably, very few who can give any distinct or accurate account. It will be the object of the following pages to remove, as far as possible, the uncertainty and difficulty by which this question is surrounded - to shew the former as well as the actual situation of the Jews in this country - and to point out the foundation and nature of the law, as it regards them at the present moment. Download or read book A History of the Jews in England written by Albert Montefiore Hyamson and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2015-06-24 with total page 408 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A History of the Jews in England The Jewish population of the British Isles has never formed any but a numerically insignificant proportion of the Diaspora. Yet, despite this relative insignificance of Anglo-Jewry, the story of the Jews in this country is of supreme importance to the student of the philosophy of Jewry and of Jewish history. The adage that history repeats itself is well worn, but none the less true. The history of the Jews in England is the history in miniature of the Diaspora. Since the opening of the Christian era the story of the Jews has everywhere been the same - continual alternations of prosperity and persecution. With nations as with individuals the wheel of fortune ever revolves, but with the Jews its progress seems to have been more rapid, for the alternations have been more numerous than with any other race. But with the Jews the wheel lingers during the period of depression and hurries through that of elation in order to recover the time that has been lost. The story told in the following pages shows all the vicissitudes common these two thousand years to the lot of Jewry. The times of prosperity in England have been among the happiest in the annals of the race. At other seasons Anglo-Jewry has reached the lowest depths of despair, when but a step seemed to separate the community from annihilation. Yet that step here as elsewhere has never been taken. Book The Expulsion of the Jews From England in 1290 Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Expulsion of the Jews From England in 1290 Classic Reprint written by B. L. Abrahams and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-03-15 with total page 88 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Expulsion of the Jews From England in 1290 The expulsion of the Jews from England by Edward I. Is a measure concerning the causes of which no contemporary historian gives, or pretends to give, any but the most meagre information. It was passed by the King in his secret council, of the proceedings of which we naturally know nothing. Of the occasion that suggested it, each separate writer has his own account, and none has a claim to higher authority than the rest; and yet there is much in the circumstances connected with it that calls for ex planation. How was it that, at a time when trade and the need for capital were growing, the Jews, who were reputed to be among the great capitalists of Europe, were expelled from England? How did Edward, a king who was in debt from the moment he began his reign till the end, bring himself to give up the revenue that his father and grandfather had derived from the Jews How could he, as an honourable king, drive out subjects who were protected by a Charter that one Of his predecessors had granted, and another had solemnly confirmed To answer these questions we must consider what was the position that the Jews occupied in England, how it was forced on them, and how it brought them into antagonism at various times with the interests of the several orders of the English people, and with the teachings of the Catholic Church. We Shall thus find the origin of forces strong enough when they converged to bring about the result. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
