Book excerpt: In the fullness of time the Christian religion sprang out of Judaism; as a fact, indeed, of divine revelation, but also inseparably joined by innumerable threads with the previous thousand years of Israel’s history. No incident in the gospel story, no word in the preaching of Jesus Christ, is intelligible apart from its setting in Jewish history, and without a clear understanding of that world of thought-distinction of the Jewish people. It tells about the Roman political system, the representation of the Jewish political parties, the messianic movements, and the Greek and Jewish literature, including Apocrypha and pseudepigrapha.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: That’s now, but what about then? There is much diversity in Christianity today in terms of what constitutes necessary core beliefs, but what can we know about the earliest Christianity? Until the major councils began in the fourth century, were all who claimed to be Christian considered part of the church, or was there more to it than just claiming a name? Is there evidence for how the church understood core and necessary beliefs prior to Constantine’s arrival in history and the Council of Nicea in AD 325? This book examines such questions. Using only those materials that are accepted by most scholars on the subject, whether they are Christian or not, and focusing on the period from AD 30–250, a picture emerges showing what Christians held as a core belief as well as how flexible they were on this belief. Only after identifying where the church stood in this period can we begin to understand whether others such as Ebionites, Docetists, and Marcionites would have been accepted as Christian. A case is made based on writings from the church, the Nag Hammadi, and a completely secular tool from the twentieth century to find the conclusion to this question.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For centuries now, the vast majority of the Christian population in the West has been locked into the mindset that believing in a Creator God is a matter of faith and emotions as opposed to clear and rational thought, and that faith should be kept in the private realm. Under Investigation aims at dispelling this oppressive way of thinking. This is a workbook that will arm Christians with scientific truths, written in plain language. Its goal is to target the integrity of the New Testament using scholarly, historical and literary scientific findings. Knowledge is power, and in the quest for absolute Truth, this workbook will guide the student to an educated understanding of both who the God depicted in the Bible truly is, and who He is not.

This groundbreaking book reinvigorates the contested hypothesis that the Essenes were responsible. Rather than being a marginal esoteric sect, Taylor shows that this group acted as one of the leading legal schools of Judaism.
