Yet there are enough records left to prove, that a similar noble spirit animated the Huguenots in America. From this most interesting manuscript, I have been permitted to extract the following pas sage not inserted in the printed edition. I give part of it in the old French, that the arduous work of the translator may be appreciated. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from History of the Huguenots IT has been truly said of nations as of indi viduals, that the great epochs in their history depend upon causes which have long been Operating. The process is, perhaps, unob served until some slight circumstance all at once develops what has been the growth of years. Those who look at this result often imagine that it is in reality, as it appears to be. The occurrence of a moment; but a discern ing eye detects in it the combined influence of innumerable past events. Perhaps we are never more forcibly reminded of this princi ple than when we examine the origin of the Reformation in Europe. In several different countries, almost by a simultaneous impulse, and without inter-communication, error and superstition gave place to truth and freedom of thought. Such a crisis in the intellectual and moral history of nations (however modi hed by attending circumstances) must ever be contemplated with intense interest. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Huguenots Let this faith be fastened on our spirits, and history becomes a beautiful study. The world is see linked to Christ - an emerald rainbow round about throne. In His great purpose its destiny of glory is secure. There is sure warrant for the expectation of that pro gress of which the poet-watchers have so hopefully sung; progress, unintermitting, through every disaster of the past, heralding progress, yet diviner, in every possibility of the future. The eye of sense may trace but scanty foreshadowings of the brightness there may be dark omens in the aspects of the times - clouds may gather gloomily around, and the wistful glance, strained through the darkness, may discern but faint traces of the coming of the day; but it shall come, and every movement brings it nigher - for the word of the Lord hath spoken it, and that word endureth for ever. Book The Huguenots in France and America

Download or read book The Huguenots in France and America written by Hannah Farnham Sawyer Lee and published by Genealogical Publishing Com. This book was released on 1973 with total page 664 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Doubtless one of the scarcest Huguenot studies and yet unquestionably a classic, Lee's "Huguenots in France and America" is essentially a history rather than a treatise on emigration or a list of names, with primary emphasis on the exposition of facts and notable events. It is an exhaustive account of the origins of the Huguenots in France, their persecution and their subsequent flight, embracing sketches of many leading contemporaries and an account of the Reformation of the church in Europe and kindred circumstances resulting in the rise of French Protestantism. Particularly close attention is given to the major events leading to the Huguenot dispersion to England, Holland, Germany, and America; namely, the St. Bartholomew Massacre (1572), the assassination of King Henry IV (1610), and the Revocation of the Edict of Nantes (1685). An important section of nearly 100 pages is devoted to the Huguenots of America, with emphasis on the formidable Huguenot settlements at Oxford (Mass.), New Rochelle (N.Y.), New Paltz (N.Y.), Frenchtown (R.I.), and Jamestown (S.C.). The work further contains a "List of the Names of Huguenot Families in America," documenting the arrival in Boston of those families who later settled in Maine, New York, and Rhode Island; and the names of those who settled in the South, including the settlement on the Santee River in South Carolina.

Book A History of the Huguenots of the Dispersion at the Recall of the Edict of Nantes Classic Reprint

This book was released on 2015-07-11 with total page 270 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A History of the Huguenots of the Dispersion at the Recall of the Edict of Nantes An author in his preface commonly sets out with a protest against the disparagement of his predecessors; and, although we seem to possess an invincible capacity for absorbing anything that comes into print, the putting forth of a book is still a matter of reasonable diffidence, as if one should dare to add to the infinite. The existence of a book has to be accounted for; it even needs an apology. The fortunate origin of the following chapters, representing a university essay, relieves me from this demand; and what I shall say about previous histories may be dressed in the modest obliquity of the third person. It is open to enquire what was the deficiency in former treatment that appealed to the trustees of the marquess of Lothian's historical prize when they called for a fresh review of The Emigration consequent upon the Revocation of the Edict of Nantes. The history of the banished huguenots has been written in polemic and anecdote, homiletically, statistically, genealogically. Cut off from these methods by the conditions of space and manner incident to the form of an essay, it was left to me to assume the systematic habit of the bibliographer. To write otherwise had been a task of greater ease, perhaps of more popular interest. But the disorder in which the subject has hitherto been left, while it enhanced the difficulty of arrangement, made a compact index to its literature the more necessary. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Wars of the Huguenots There were, however, more special reasons why in the great religious movement of the time France walked at first with a slow and lingering footstep. In other countries the Reformation found from the beginning some ecclesiastical or political support to lay its hand upon, by which to help itself forward. None such was found in France. The Church was not groaning. There under the same bondage that elsewhere Oppressed her; she had already fought for and so far achieved her independence, that no foreign ecclesiastics were intruded into her highest Offices, nor were her revenues liable to be diverted at the will of the Pepe into Italian chan nels. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Story of the Huguenots: As Contained in Two Addresses Made Before the Huguenot Societies of South Carolina and Pennsylvania AS the history of the French Huguenots from the Reformation to the Edict of Tol cration in 1787 covers a period of some two centuries and a half, it is obvious that any detailed narrative of their vicissitudes and tribulations must of necessity be a long one. Although the literature of Huguenot history is quite extensive, much that has been written deals exclusively with special phases of the subject and it is not easy to find anywhere a concise epitome of the whole story. Book The Huguenots in the Seventeenth Century

Download or read book The Huguenots in the Seventeenth Century written by Charles Tylor and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-03-24 with total page 350 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Huguenots in the Seventeenth Century: Including the History of the Edict of Nantes, From Its Enactment in 1598 to Its Revocation in 1685 The -Revocation of the Edict of Nantes- is an historical phrase familiar to most readers. Comparatively few, however, would seem to have a distinct idea of what the Edict of Nantes was, or how it came to be revoked, or of the prolonged and terrible persecution with which its revocation was connected. In the present volume, after a brief account of the promulgation of the Edict by Henry IV., the steps are traced by which, through nearly a century, efforts were incessantly made to undo his work; and the narrative of the sufferings of the Huguenot Church is continued down to the year 1700. It is a sad story, and would be utterly dark were it not illumined by heavenly light. It brings before us, in high relief, human depravity, human weakness, and the power of Divine Grace. We see, as in the persecution of the Early Church under Decius, whole communities giving way before the terrible storm; but we see the great majority, when the first shock was over, return to their allegiance; whilst a goodly number never yielded, but endured torments as cruel, and perhaps more prolonged, than any other company of martyrs whom the Church loves to honour. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Huguenots of France: Or, the Times of Henry IV Fauchet, one of those devoted pastors who in the darkest days of persecution refused to forsake their flock, but went from place to place in constant jeopardy of life, strengthening the weak and com forting the desponding. This was my first introduction to M. Fauchet, a man to whom I afterwards owed so much, and my childish heart was drawn to him at once, for there was in his aspect a sweetness mingled with dignity which was singularly attractive. I was never happier than when attend ing him in the long walks he was accus temed to take among the hills in search of the scattered members of his flock. This book was released on 2018-03-22 with total page 522 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Henry of Navarre and the Huguenots in France Lefevre and his friends did little more than give expression to the general desire that the Church should be reformed from within. They were sup ported by the sympathy of the scholars and men of letters who had long been engaged in a bitter quarrel with the monkish pedants, to whom the system and the maxims of the schoolmen were not less sacred than the cardinal doctrines of the Church. The false renderings, the spurious documents, the historical frauds and obsolete philosophy, on which the Catholic theologians of the day relied, hardly allowed a learned man to be orthodox. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Coligny: The Earlier Life of the Great Huguenot This book might bear as its fitting epigraph the saying of Agrippa d'Aubigne, "The world judges of all by success." Coligny did not succeed. For a long time his name was proscribed, and even now it has received but scant and tardy justice. His mortal remains found their first resting-place at Montfaucon; thence they were removed to Montauban and to Chatillon, where for greater security the leaden coffin was built up in a recess in the wall. Thence, in 1786, they were again removed to Maupertuis, and finally, on September 29th, 1851, they were laid in their present resting-place, among the ruins of the old Castle of Chatillon, on the very spot where Coligny was born. His name and fame have suffered like vicissitudes. History has been slow to give him his rightful place. Yet a brief survey of his life shows that he is one to whom the world owes much. Coligny was a born soldier. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
