Download or read book A History of the Great War Vol 1 Classic Reprint written by John Buchan and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-02-08 with total page 636 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A History of the Great War, Vol. 1 This work in its original form appeared in twenty-four volumes between February 1915 and July mm, and was therefore written and published for the most part during the progress of the campaign. Begun as an experiment to pass the time during a period of enforced inaction, its large sales and the evidence forthcoming that it met a certain need induced me to continue it as a duty, and the bulk of it was written in the scanty leisure which I could snatch from service abroad and at home. Any narrative produced under such conditions must bristle with imperfections. It will contain many errors of fact. The writer cannot stage his drama or prepare the reader for a sudden change by a gradual revelation of its causes. His work must have something of the apparent inconsequence of real life. He records one month a sanguine mood and a hopeful forecast; three months later he will tell of depression and of expectations belied. He must set out interim judgments, and presently recant them. Book excerpt: 1918: The end of the war to end all wars. The end of an era for victors and vanquished alike. When Germany launched the Ludendorf Offensives—the most massive military bombardment of World War I—they seemed certain to win. But when American troops began arriving in droves, the Allies' certain defeat became a decisive victory. No Man's Land takes us into the trenches, behind enemy lines, into military strategy sessions and through the corridors of power in London, Paris, Berlin, and Washington in a brilliant account of one of the most fateful years in Western history. Drawing on new sources—diaries, memoirs, vivid personal experiences—here is a book that for sheer excitement, drama, vigor, and emotional impact rivals the greatest novels, history marvelously told by the incomparable John Toland. "A compelling human picture...a marvelous job by a master of the big-canvas history." Business Week

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Great World War, Vol. 9: A History The present volume completes a task which could never have been brought to a satisfactory conclusion without the generous co-operation of readers in all parts of the globe. In the first place, therefore, the editor's cordial thanks are due to those subscribers whose encouragement alone made it possible, at a time when publishing of any description was carried on in face of almost insuperable difficulties, to continue the work long after it had passed the size and scope originally mapped out for it. Planned at the beginning to be completed in four volumes - when hopes were high that the war would be of comparatively brief duration - the history grew with the increasing magni tude of the con ict. Readers, however, readily fell in with the proposals to carry on so that the work should not suffer by undue compression; and the editor has thus been able to continue on the lines laid down at the start, seeking always to preserve the true balancing of every phase, and as far as possible to bring it into relationship with the World War as a whole. Through out there has been no hurried attempt to keep pace in print with the rush of epoch-making events. At all costs it was determined to fulfil our promise that the record should not be a mere collection of disjointed narratives hastily put together, to be as hastily read and hastily cast aside and, though there has been considerable delay in consequence in bringing out the con clud'ing volumes, the permanent value of the work has thereby been increased. It has also enabled us to include the terms of the Peace Treaties, not only with Germany but also with Austria, Bulgaria, and Turkey, the last of which has only been signed while the present volume is passing through the press, nearly two years after the conclusion of the Armistice with Germany. To read the text of these treaties, with all their conflicting interests in every part of the world, is to understand some of the difficulties which have dogged the footsteps of the Allied statesmen in the prolonged course of their 'peace negotiations both at home and abroad. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from History of England, Vol. 4: From the Conclusion of the Great War in 1815 AN author who undertakes to write a long history is exposed at the outset of his task to a considerable dilemma. If he delay its publication till the whole is finished, he is more likely to produce a work calculated to deter readers from its bulk than to attract them from its completeness. If, on the contrary, he decide on publishing it in instalments, he is liable to the charge that his narrative is imperfect, and that he has omitted facts an account of which he has perhaps merely de ferred. In the present work an attempt has been made to avoid this difficulty by making each instalment of it, as far as possible, a complete whole. The period with which the author had to deal lent itself to this treat ment, and the object which he had in view was pro moted by this arrangement.
