Book A History of the Doctrine of the Work of Christ in Its Ecclesiastical Development Vol 1 of 2 Classic Reprint

Download or read book A History of the Doctrine of the Work of Christ in Its Ecclesiastical Development Vol 1 of 2 Classic Reprint written by Robert S. Franks and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-03-03 with total page 472 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A History of the Doctrine of the Work of Christ in Its Ecclesiastical Development, Vol. 1 of 2 It is stated in the Introduction to this work (cf. Vol. I, p. 2), that its purpose is to trace the antecedents of the modern doctrine of the work of Christ. The result of my investigation is to show that this doctrine in its most typical form, as developed by Schleiermacher and Ritschl, is no arbitrary opinion on the subject, but that the whole course of doctrinal development has led to it by an immanent necessity. This course of development has its nodal points in the four great syntheses (cf. Vol. I, pp. 5-8) in which the various factors that have contributed to the doctrine of the work of Christ have from time to time found a relative settlement. Into these syntheses the threads of doctrine are gathered up, and out of them again they diverge. The gist of my book is accordingly to be found in the sections which treat of these syntheses (Vol. I, pp. 1-8, pp. 258-262, 298-300, 440-444, Vol. II, pp. 5-7, 364-370): in order however to apprehend the full significance of these highly condensed summaries, the rest of the book must be read. This book was released on 2017-12-03 with total page 484 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from History of the Development of the Doctrine of the Person of Christ, Vol. 1 The Greek Church, seeking after wisdom, regarded Christ as the manifestation of the truth: in its eyes, He was the personal embodiment of wisdom, which, being free from falsity and error, is also free from sin. It regarded Christ predominantly from the point of view of His prophetical Office, though not without cherishing the hope that, at the end of the days, He would prove His might as a King in that conflict with evil and death, to which the victory gained over Satan by Christ in a supra-historical struggle, which took place outside of the sphere within which humanity moves, formed the pre lude. The orthodox Church did, it is true, cling zealously and faithfully to the divinity and humanity of Christ; for, in deed, the doctrine that the Son, the eternal Wisdom, became. Man, forms a part of the true doctrine of the Person of Christ. Subsequently to the fifth century, however, few of the Greek Fathers were able to give a deeper reason for the incarnation; than that the best means of exhibiting and teaching the truth - that is, God - was that the invisible Wisdom should become visible. Redemption (in its subjective aspect), and faith, are therefore treated almost solely from the theoretical point of view, as consisting in such an acquaintance with, or recognition of, the dogma, as implies it to be true. Placing the chief good in knowledge, the Greek Church directed its main efforts, as a Church, during the period when it still displayed mental activity, to giving its dogmas greater precision of form. The Episcopate was the means employed to this end. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book The Work of Christ Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Work of Christ Classic Reprint written by Peter Taylor Forsyth and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-10-11 with total page 260 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Work of Christ To avoid repetition. My hope is to be Of some use to those ministers who are still at a stage when they are seeking more footing on such matters than they have been provided with in mere Biblical or Historical Theology. There is no region where religion becomes so quickly theology as in dealing with the work Of Christ. No doctrine takes us so straight to the heart Of things, or so forces on us a discussion of the merits of the case, the dog matic of it, as distinct from its scriptural or its ecclesiastical career. NO doctrine draws so directly on the personal religion Of sinful men, and none, therefore, is Open to so much change in the course Of the Church's thought upon its growing faith and life. Thus when we consider that here we are at once where the form may change most in time and yet the feet be most firmly set for eternity, we realise how difficult and delicate our task must be. And we are made to feel as if the due book on such a theme could only be written from behind the veil with the most precious blood that ever flowed in human veins. Book A History of the Church in the Middle Ages

Download or read book A History of the Church in the Middle Ages written by F. Donald Logan and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2013 with total page 362 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Conceptually well organized, stylistically clear, intellectually thoughtful, and pedagogically useful." - Thomas Head, Speculum "For its humane and learned approach to its enormous canvas, as well as for the cogency with which it penetrates at speed to the essentials of a vanished historical epoch, this History of the Church in the Middle Ages deserves a very wide audience indeed." - Barrie Dobson, English Historical Review "To have written a scholarly and very readable history of the Western Church over a millennium is a remarkable tour de force, for which Donald Logan is to be warmly congratulated." - C.H Lawrence, The Tablet "A feat of historical synthesis, most confident in its telling of the coming of Christianity. Books like Logan's are needed more than ever before." - Miri Rubin, TLS In this fascinating survey, F. Donald Logan introduces the reader to the Christian church, from the conversion of the Celtic and Germanic peoples to the discovery of the New World. He reveals how the church unified the people of Western Europe as they worshipped with the same ceremonies and used Latin as the language of civilized communication. From remote, rural parish to magnificent urban cathedral, A History of the Church in the Middle Ages explores the role of the church as a central element in determining a thousand years of history. This new edition brings the book right up to date with recent scholarship, and includes an expanded introduction exploring the interaction of other faiths - particularly Judaism and Islam - with the Christian church.

Book An Introduction to the Early History of Christian Doctrine

Download or read book An Introduction to the Early History of Christian Doctrine written by J. F. BETHUNE-BAKER and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-10-12 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from An Introduction to the Early History of Christian Doctrine: To the Time of the Council of Chalcedon IN the preparation of this volume the writer has been guided by the general purpose of the Series of Theological Handbooks of which it is a part. A continuous narrative is given in the text, with as much freedom from technical treatment as the subject allows; details and authorities are relegated to footnotes, and some special questions and difficulties are dealt with in notes appended to the several chapters. The chief aim which has been kept in View throughout has been to offer to the student of the history of Christian Doctrine during the first four centuries of the life of the Church such information with regard to the facts and the sources as will enable him to prosecute his study for himself. It is only a limited period with which the book deals, but a period in which the Christian theory of life - oi the relations between God, the World, and Man - was worked out in its chief aspects, and all the doctrines to which the Church of Christ as a whole is pledged were framed. The 'authority' of these doctrines is only to be understood by study of their history. Their permanent value can only be appreciated by knowledge of the circumstances in which they came to be expressed, knowledge which must certainly precede any restatement of the doctrines, such as is from time to time demanded in the interests of a growing or a wider faith. This book was released on 2016-06-26 with total page 490 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from History of the Development of the Doctrine of the Person of Christ, Vol. 2 The Mysticism of Germany concentrated its chief interest and attention on the realization and intellection of true person ality, and of that eternal image of God, which it ought to bear. To enjoy and gain the vision of God, to be absorbed in Him, had been the chief aim of Mysticism in its Romanic develop ment but this is no longer the case. Such sweet feelings, the experience and tasting of God and His enlightenment, are no longer regarded as the highest goal. Indeed, the German Mystics warned each other against such a pursuit of enjoyment, as against a great danger: they feared that it would lead to the abuse of the divine life, to the service of self, and, retard the work of God in the soul.1 They thus showed, even in this matter, that their Mysticism bore an ethical character. Not to lose themselves in God, and in the enjoyment of Him, was their anxiety; but to realize the true life of the true personality. The contrast between themselves and the God after whom their souls yearned, - they but finite, and He absolutely infinite, - did not trouble them adomain of infinite possibilities had been opened up to them within their own souls; and no axiom appeared to them so thoroughly certain, as the axiom, that the human soul is, in itself, perfectly capable of receiving the divine. To their mind, in fact, it appeared rather in the light of a contradiction, that the soul should rest satisfied with a less good than God. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Lectures on the History of Jesus Christ, Vol. 1 of 2 The favourable reception of the first edition of this work, and the testimony of pious readers, have given the Author reason to be satisfied that he complied with the request of his hearers, who pleaded for the publication of these Lectures, as exhibiting a more instructive and impressive history of our adorable Redeemer than is to be found in any of those works which have appeared under the title of the life of Christ. In a series of discourses which occupied the morning of the Lord's day, during almost four years, repetitions must be expected to occur. But the Gospels themselves are known to contain a similar recurrence of the same ideas and expressions, and those who are acquainted with the philosophy of the human mind need not to be informed what advantages may be thence derived.
