Book excerpt: Excerpt from A History of the Civil War in the United States Though a Southerner, the son of one Who fought in the Confederate armies, accustomed since early childhood to hear personal narratives of Southern dash and valor (but to read more often the Northern version of the war); it is my purpose to give an unprejudiced account of the events nar rated and of the personages mentioned. It shall be my en deaver to be untrammeled either by sectional sentiment or partisan prejudice. By balancing and carefully weighing the value of State records, official war reports, the truthful ness of personal narratives, and the fairness of historical writings, I shall endeavor to give equal justice to all;a1ways keeping 111 mind that though we have a great united country the South and North alike Wish honor to be given Where honor is due and that human nature asks that the darker places in many lives be not too highly illuminated. To have a proper conception of great historical events and of the magnitude of these events, it is necessary to have an intelligent knowledge Of the real and immediate causes lead ing to them. Where war occurs political conditions and social affairs of the time must be understood, and the wealth, natural resources, characteristics of the people, and military supplies must be taken into account, througheut the history. Book The United States of America

Download or read book The United States of America written by David Saville Muzzey and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-12-25 with total page 684 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The United States of America: Through the Civil War This book is intended primarily for college students. It aims at something beyond that mere chronicling of the facts of the past in fuller detail which often makes the advanced history text only the elementary book writ large. In other branches of study there is progression. The writer on calculus or me chamical engineering does not feel it incumbent upon him to restate and explain simple mathematical processes, like factor ing or the extraction of cube root. He takes the knowledge of these things for granted. But historians are often content to repeat over and over again the same succession of names and dates, instead of attempting to interpret their meaning to ma turing minds. This is what gives so many students the impres sion that history is a discipline of memory of past events, and the content of history a museum of wax figures in no vital rela tion to the society of today. Obviously, unless the historian can show that the men and institutions of the past have that inevitable parental relation to present social and political struc tures which the biologist, for example, traces in the develop ment of physical life, history will continue to be remote, unreal, and unrelated. As a succession of happenings the past, even the most recent past, is forever gone. It is as far beyond our reach as the moons of Jupiter. It is behind our back, too. The entire and increasing work of our life is the unceasing creation of a future with our present materials - as in the case of the traveler who lays the corduroy road ahead of him log by log. Because our present material is the heritage of the long past, that past has eternal significance in determining the direction of the road which we lay. Such IS the spirit in which this book has been written. Its subject 15 the development of the American ideal of democracy. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Pictorial History of the Civil War in the United States of America, Vol. 2 An essential part of the original plan of the writer, and which has been carried out, was to make a personal visit to the principal battle-fields and other places of interest connected with the Civil War. This could not be done within the Con federate lines during the war, and it was difficult to do 'so in many places for several months after: the conflict had ceased. As much as possible of this labor was accomplished before the completion of the first volume, in which the events of the con flict, civil and military, to the close of the first battle of Bull's Run, are recorded. Book The History of the Civil War in America Vol 1 Classic Reprint

This book was released on 2017-11-25 with total page 560 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The History of the Civil War in America, Vol. 1 From the commencement of our Government there have been two antagonistic principles contending for the mastery - Slavery and Freedom. In the very heart of our democracy, the element of the most haughty and intolerant aristocracy has been nurtured, by the institution of human bondage. The most repulsive features of the old European feudalism have thus been transplanted into our Republic. The slaveholders, accustomed to despotic power over the wretched serfs, whom they have driven, by the lash, to till their soil, have assumed a sort of baronial arrogance over all men who do not own slaves, and have claimed to be the only gentle men, and the legitimate rulers of this land. But freedom has outstripped slavery in this race. And, consequently, the slaveholders, unreconciled to the loss of supremacy, strive to destroy the temple of liberty, wish ing to raise themselves into lords and potentates, over the ruin of their country. The conflict in which our nation is now involved, is simply a desperate struggle, on the part of the slaveholders, to retain, by force of arms, that domination in the government of this Republic, which they had so long held, and which, by the natural operation of the ballot-box, they were slowly but surely losing. We have here, simply the repetition of that great conflict, which, for ages, has agitated our globe - the conflict between aristocratic usurpation and popular rights. The battle has assumed the most momentous attitude, since it arrays, on either side, all the intel lectual and material energies developed by the nineteenth century. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Battle of Gettysburg: From the History of the Civil War in America The battle of Gettysburg was undoubtedly one of the greatest conflicts of modern times, not only from the number of comba tants engaged and the desperate nature of the struggle, but be cause on the now classic heights of Cemetery Ridge, Gulp's Hill, and the Round Tops the future of the American Republic, for weal or for woe, was fought and won on those memorable July days. As decisive in its character and far - reaching results as the battle of \vaterloo, like it, it has been the subject of endless con troversy and military criticism, and has brought forth a multitude of books, pamphlets, and letters, most of which serve but to be wilder and darken visibly the student of history. Book excerpt: Excerpt from History of the Civil War in America, Vol. 1 It would have been unbecoming in me to argue upon contro verted questions, national, political, or military, upon which, after careful investigation and mature deliberation, the author has expressed himself decidedly. Least of all have I considered it within my province to say a word as to his estimates of individuals and their relations to the government. He has himself said that his history was written for European readers, who desire to know only his impressions and conclusions. But the book will be largely read in this country by people more capable of judging its facts and its philosophy. Book History of the Civil War 1861 1865 Classic Reprint

Download or read book History of the Civil War 1861 1865 Classic Reprint written by James Ford Rhodes and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2015-07-03 with total page 516 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from History of the Civil War: 1861-1865 This is not an abridgment of my three volumes on the Civil War but a fresh study of the subject in which I have used my work as one of many authorities. Whenever I have transferred sentences, paragraphs and pages, I have done so because, after a study of the original authorities, I found that I could give my conclusions no better than in my first work. Since writing the three volumes, published respectively in 1895, 1899 and 1904, much new original material has come to light and valuable treatments of certain periods of the Civil War have appeared. I owe especial indebtedness to the Official Records of the Union and Confederate Navies; Diary of Gideon Welles; Life of Rawlins, which J. H. Wilson kindly permitted me to read in manuscript before publication; the Letters and Diaries of John Hay; Miss Nicolay's Personal Traits of Lincoln; Life and Letters of General Meade; W. R. Livermore, Story of the Civil War; J. Bigelow, Jr., The Campaign of Chancellorsville; W. R. Thayer, Life of John Hay; The Reminiscences of Carl Schurz. I owe a literary revision of this volume to my son, Daniel P. Rhodes. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
