Book excerpt: Excerpt from A History of the Churches in England and Scotland, Vol. 2: From the Reformation to This Present Time Pillars of churches, and nothing' could be deter: minecfmined but by the voice of the majority. It does not appear, that the principal promoters of the reformation in thofe parts, endeavoured (0 much to bring the form of church order to the conformity, which the New Tefiament points out, as to, ren der it agreeable to the mike of civil Governors, and the inclinations of the people. The rights of pri vate judgment, which were infified upon at the council of Spires, were foon betrayed by the fame perfons who gave in a proteftation in their favours; for the united fentiments of fo many divincs were foon fubfiituted in place' of the Pope's authority, and the power of general councils; and it was ac counted as criminal to depart from the formularies of'religion, which were then compofed, as it was to renounce the papal power, and the jurifdieiion of the Bilhop of Rome. The firfl defign ofithefe for mularies was, to exhibit to the world an account of what were the principles of the pretefiants and they meant no more by them, than a public vindication of themfelves, from the falfe accufations of the papifis: but after they began to increafe, and he came more refpeetable in the eyes of the world, they made theic confefiions terms of their fellow ihip, and refufed their communion to fuch as did nor agree with them in every particular. The fe veral hiilorians who have handed down to us an account of the rife and progrefs of the reformation, and the principles and prac'tice of our chief te formers, have acted, in many inftances, rather the part of apologifis than of writers of hiiiory. Book A History of the Church in Scotland Vol 2 Classic Reprint

Download or read book A History of the Church in Scotland Vol 2 Classic Reprint written by Alexander Robertson Macewen and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-02 with total page 220 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A History of the Church in Scotland, Vol. 2 When we scrutinize the movement in Scotland, we find no swift or startling change, but a gradual process of enlighten ment, the permeation of society in all its grades and classes by new ideas and ideals and the rise of new relationships, social, economic and political, resulting in emancipation from a bondage which had been due partly to ignorance, partly to isolation, partly to feudal obligations and the barbarisms of clan life. Political historians have frequently ascribed the revolution which took place in 1560 to those diplomatic negotiations which were recorded in State Papers, and specially to the change in the relations of Scotland to France and England; while many Church historians have written as if feudalism and the papacy had been omnipotent in their respective departments, until they gave way before the aggressions of Geneva Protestantism. But in fact these were only consequences, or, at the most, stages, of a trans formation which was assured, if not accomplished, at a time when England was still regarded as the Auld Enemy, ' and before Calvin had set foot in Switzerland. Book excerpt: The 18th century was a wealth of knowledge, exploration and rapidly growing technology and expanding record-keeping made possible by advances in the printing press. Works collected here include masterpieces by David Hume, Immanuel Kant, and Jean-Jacques Rousseau, as well as religious sermons and moral debates on the issues of the day, such as the slave trade. The Age of Reason saw conflict between Protestantism and Catholicism transformed into one between faith and logic -- a debate that continues in the twenty-first century. ++++ The below data was compiled from various identification fields in the bibliographic record of this title.
