His statement in the preface that he did not profess to be colourless in his opinions, was interpreted by some critics as an admission that he had written in the spirit and with the design of a partisan. He submits that the words were susceptible of a different interpretation. The writer of Church history, who is aware of his own bias in things ecclesiastical, is the more likely to be on his guard against it, and to steer an even course between divergent lines of historical representation. This has been his honest endeavour in the second volume as in the first. But as the modern period, now brought under review, bristles with controversial matter over which historians have disputed from the Reformation downwards, he has no very sanguine expectation that his treatment of it will escape the charge of partisanship from extreme men of any school. To succeed in satisfying such as are themselves partisans would assuredly be the clearest proof of partisanship. The author desires to express his obligations to the Rev. They therefore spread abroad a false and malicious report, that the king intended to invade the kingdom with English troops: upon this ground they summoned a meeting, or convention, ofthe noblemen and commissioners of burghs, to meet at lldinburgh on the 20th of February. At this convention a paper was read, which had been drawn up by Balmerino, llope (the king's advocate), and Henderson (moderator of the late Assembly), recommending an appeal to arms, and using such arguments for itsjustification as tended to inflame the passions and prejudices of the meeting. The reasons adduced were declared to be so convincing, to men whose minds were previously made up, that instantly all of them, with one voice, consented to the listing ofan army, and voted general Leslie to be the commander thereof. The reasons hich had been submitted to the convention, and had been found so convincing to tlieui, were immediately published and dispersed to all parts of the kingdom, and the convention ordained, that every minister should read this treasonable do cument from their pulpits, and frame their discourses so as to procure an universal consent amongst their parishioners. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The History of the Sufferings of the Church of Scotland, Vol. 2 of 4: From the Restoration to the Revolution Were we to form an estimate of Mr Wodrow's History, by the rules which rhetoricians have laid down for historical composition, we should be apt to draw most unfavourable conclusions. If that alone is entitled to the name of History which bears its reader along with the flow of a regular and well-compacted narrative; which descends not to the minutiae of private and domestic life; and which gives us the substance and the results of information acquired, rather than the information itself; then, most assuredly, will the work of our venerable author be found to occupy no very lofty niche in the gallery of historical portraiture. But it is the part of candour to judge of a work, not by a standard of our own, however just and equitable it may be, but by a fair and impartial estimate of the object which the author had in his eye at the time, and of the fidelity with which that object has been realized. Had the "History of the Sufferings of the Church of Scotland" been composed according to the rules laid down by the critics, and so admirably exemplified by many ancient and many modern names, we might unquestionably have had a better written narrative; but the church and the world would have lost much by the exchange. As the case actually stands, we have presented to us a most valuable depository of minute and well-authenticated facts, bearing with more or less aptitude on the general character of the period. We have a most exact and vivid picture of the manners of the age; and sketches of the leading individuals drawn to the life, in their actions and habits. We are admitted behind the scenes, and favoured with a view of the ever shifting agency by which the machine of public affairs is kept in play. We see passing in array before us, not only the great actors on the stage, but their less prominent, though not less important minions; while the great public men themselves arc stripped of their assumed disguise, and exhibited exactly as they are. The stately march of national events is so associated with the incidents of private and familiar life, as to produce a result not altogether in harmony with the established rules of historical composition, and yet singularly advantageous to the real student of human character. It is not the political, nor the literary, nor the constitutional, nor even the merely ecclesiastical history of the period that is given; but while there is a mixture more or less of them all, there is what the author had professedly in his eye throughout, the internal "history of the sufferings of the church," both in its associated capacity, and in the experience of individuals. The rigid historian might have confined him self almost exclusively to the first of these, and on this principle an interesting narrative might have been formed. But it is by the union of both objects that our historian has realized his own judiciously selected plan, and now stands forth to our merited regard as the only minute, and comprehensive, and faithful annalist of the period. Such another historian of the eventful era, from 1638 to 1660, is still a desideratum in our national literature; and I verily believe, that with all their prejudices, the Scotts and the Sharpes, and the Russels, and the Pearsons, of anti-covenanting celebrity, would be quite overjoyed to meet with such another. Malice, envy, and enmity, against religion and its followers, are insatiable; and the Lord in the depth of his righteous judgment, suffers sinners to harden themselves, and go on from evil to worse, till their cup fill. Success in sin emboldeneth the actors, and thirst after blood, like a fever, still increases till a crisis happen. Accordingly, the reader will find a cruel oppressive spirit mightily upon the increase in Scotland, this year: the work is turning easy, hardships upon Presbyterians ordinary, and the trade is gainful to not a few. Towards the end of the year, a vast many gentlemen, formerly out of their reach, were attacked, and the prospect of having a share of swinging fines, as good, if not better, as forfeitures, made the sentences go glibly on. Some of the best of the nation were attacked, and the duke of York had every thing going in Scotland, according to his wish. We have this year a new scene of blood, and public executions were frequent; and, during this summer, murders in cold blood in the fields are beginning, and we shall meet with great numbers of them next year. The universal pressing of the test, was a noble handle for persecution. Fines and banishments are most frequent. The garrisons and lesser courts, by citations and searches, harass the country; and the larger circuits bring persons of better quality to a great deal of trouble. Great numbers of gentlemen of note and rank, are most exorbitantly fined, to the value of their real estates; and this year is shut up with the martyrdom of that excellent and extraordinary person the laird of Jerviswood.
