Book excerpt: Excerpt from A History of the Canadian Pacific Railway IN this study an attempt has been made to trace the history of the Canadian Pacific Railway from an evolutionary/ and scientific point of view. Obviously, no conclusions can be reached in the matter of recommendations since no attempt is made to state a definite objective. Objectives are being formulated, and the interest has been in the process of their formulation. No claim is made as to the merits or demerits of this method of approach. Protest may be anticipated, especially in View of the character of existing treatises on the subject and on related topics. Much has been written in description and in appraisal of the personalities concerned, and the subject lends itself in a very striking way to this method of treatment. These studies have been useful for the preparation of this history in their material rather than in their conclusions. At this point, grateful thanks are expressed to Prof. C. W. Wright, of the University of Chicago, to members of the Department of Political Science of the University of Toronto, to my sister, Mrs. M. Malcolm, and to numerous others for assistance in many directions. Above all, acknowledgment is made of the aid and encouragement of my wife in all the stages of preparation. Book The Canadian Pacific Railway Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Canadian Pacific Railway Classic Reprint written by Frederick Arthur Ambrose Talbot and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-02-06 with total page 108 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Canadian Pacific Railway The trail was exasperating. When it passed over stretches of land lying high in the glades it was hard and dry in summer, but in the places where it dipped down it was quite likely that in following it you might plunge into holes filled with mud where you would sink up to the waist, or if you were riding your horse would go in as far as the girth. Sometimes the trail followed the edge of a steep precipice with the river foaming along hundreds of feet below. Then extreme care had to be taken in crawling along such a dangerous part. What are called muskegs, however, were the worst difficulty of all. This is the Indian word for a morass, something like the peat-bogs which are found in Scotland, Ireland, and on the Yorkshire moors. These muskegs are filled with rotting leaves, tree trunks, grass, and other vegetable stuff, which has accumulated year after year, and has become thoroughly soddened with water. The surface seems to be uite hard and safe, so the unsuspecting traveller plods steadily forward. But before he has gone many yards he is caught in some horrible sticky mud from which he can hardly draw his feet it is as if he had walked into a giant glue-pot by accident. Many a man has lost his life in this way, for the bogs are not small - indeed, sometimes they stretch for miles and appear to be bottomless. This book was released on 2017-10-12 with total page 48 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Dominion of Canada and the Canadian Pacific Railway Now assuming, and I think that the assumption is a fair one, that the longevity and fecundity of the people of Canada are not less than of the people of England, the ratio of increase in Canada should be equal to that of England, and taking into account the fact that between 1860 and 1870 there was a large emigration from England and a large immigration into Canada, it is evident that the ratio of increase in Canada ought in that period to have been greater than in England - as we have seen the Dominion census shows it to have been less. Download or read book The Story of the Canadian Pacific Railway Classic Reprint written by Keith Morris and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-03-21 with total page 172 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Story of the Canadian Pacific Railway Rom a deep canyon in the heart of a range F Of Canadian mountains there emerged on a September day a group of unkempt and weather-scarred men. They continued their stumbling march over a ground covered by masses of rock, fallen trees, long rank ferns, and poisonous devil's club. At mid-day they halted, wearied and hungry, and each man ate his perilously meagre rations. Then one Of the party, a tall, bearded man with a commanding presence and distinguished appearance, despite the raggedness Of his attire, turned to a younger man beside him and gave him a few words Of instructions. The younger man fired two rifle shots in rapid succession. All the men then listened intently. The report of a gun shot was heard in reply. The rifle emitted another three shots, and again a gun Shot was heard - once - twice - three times. Thank God! We have established our con nections! The tall, bearded man, evidently the leader, exclaimed. The longed-for supplies were there as arranged. All anxiety for the future was over. The party hurried forward, eagerly and excitedly overcoming the Obstacles underfoot. After a little time they halted to rest, and the young man again pilled the trigger Of his loaded rifle. Two shots, more distinct from their closer proximity, were heard. The men again advanced, elation marked on every countenance. Going straight in the direction of the sound, they strove to follow it. Soon they were out of the green woods and before them lay the waters of the Columbia. On the opposite shore, about a mile distant, they Observed the smoke of a camp. A series of hurrahs broke from the men - their friends from Kamloops were there at the appointed meeting-place. Book California and Alaska and Over the Canadian Pacific Railway Classic Reprint

Download or read book California and Alaska and Over the Canadian Pacific Railway Classic Reprint written by William Seward Webb and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-02-06 with total page 308 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from California and Alaska, and Over the Canadian Pacific Railway The unavoidable delay caused by the illness of my daughter, already referred to, found the season so far advanced when the time came to start that we were obliged to omit our visit to the city of Mexico. We decided, however, that immediately after leaving Omaha we would travel to the southward and eventually reach the warm climate of Southern California. A journey like this, interesting under ordi nary conditions, would seem to be especially noteworthy for the manner in which it was performed, and, on that account, worthy of being chronicled. Hence it is that I have seen fit to give an unpretentious and, I trust, not entirely uninteresting story of our travels, supplemented by illustrations which will be found helpful as interpreters of the text. This book was released on 2015-07-01 with total page 82 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Some Startling Facts Relating to the Canadian Pacific Railway and the North-West Lands, Also a Brief Discussion Regarding the Route, the Western Terminus and the Lands Available for Settlement Various indications point to the existence of a wide spread and rapidly growing feeling of dissatisfaction and distrust throughout the older provinces of the Dominion, with regard to the adopted route and construction of that portion of the Canadian Pacific Railway which traverses the "Rocky Mountain" and "Cascade" Zones, and terminates at Burrard Inlet. The main difficulty in the construction of the Pacific Railway is encountered in the "Cascade" or Coast range, through which any line from the interior of the Continent must pass in order to reach the coast. All surveys made hitherto have been met by this grave obstacle. The "Yale," "Bute Inlet," "Kemsquit," and "Skeena" routes are all, owing to this impediment, well nigh impracticable, and the adoption of any one of them could only bo justified, were it to lead to tangible advantages beyond. No such advantages exist, the entire seaboard being but the adamantine buttress of a mountain range, one hundred miles in width. The seaboard again, although pierced by countless Inlets, and presenting on the map a most favourable appearance, offers in reality very grave obstacles to the mariner, because of the nearly universal dearth of good anchorages. On the whole mainland coast there is but one really good natural harbour - Port Simpson. All others have drawbacks in a more or less degree.
