Book excerpt: Excerpt from Mezzotinto Engraving: A Paper Read Before the Sette of Odd Volumes at Willis's Rooms on March 4th, 1887 The fable, formerly current, that Prince Rupert in vented this art, while watching the markings made upon a piece of rag with which one of his soldiers was cleaning a rusty gun, is pleasingly ingenious, but wholly untenable. Rupert was, however, considered as the inventor until 1839, when Léon Laborde brought the actual discoverer to light in von Siegen. The error in question was promulgated by John Evelyn, of diary fame, who was the first to print an account of the art in a little treatise on Chalcography, published in London wherein he gives the Prince the credit of having invented the new way of engraving, or mezzotinto, as it was then styled. Evelyn should have contented himself with the state ment that Rupert communicated the process to him, for it is conclusively proved that Ludwig von Siegen, a Lieu tenant-colonel in the service of the Landgrave of Hesse, was really the inventor, a fact which is shown by a letter of his, dated 12-lgth August, 1642, still preserved at Cassel. Addressing the Landgrave, to whom he forwards a mezzotint portrait of his mother, Amelia Elizabeth, Siegen says: This is the print from copper, gracious Prince and Lord, which I promised to prepare for the ever praise worthy memory of your Grace's mother, in order that many illustrious persons, acquainted with the actions of so widely famed a princess, might be enabled to possess the likeness of her person. But since [have discovered a new or singular invention of a kind never hitherto beheld, I have, on account of the nicety of the work. Been able only to have few copies struck off, not thousands, as in the case of ordinary engravings, and therefore can with them only oblige a few persons. I could not neglect to dedicate to your Grace, as an extraordinary amateur of Art, such a rare and hitherto unseen work of Art and later, the present method is all merely dots, which information I did not wish to conceal from your Grace as being well skilled in Art. Book The Art of Engraving with the Various Modes of Operation Under the Following Different Divisions

Download or read book The Art of Engraving with the Various Modes of Operation Under the Following Different Divisions written by Theodore Henry Fielding and published by . This book was released on 1841 with total page 258 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: By the second quarter of the nineteenth century both stipple engraving and aquatint, regarded by Fielding as an art 'invented for the torment of man', were no longer widely used by publishers for large-scale reproductive engravings. Line engraving with its 'beautiful but more or less mechanical arrangement of lines' was also losing ground to the freer style attainable through lithography. The manufactured demand for the 'beautiful productions of our best engravers' through literary annuals 'flung with a prodigal hand before the public, at a price for which they should never have been sold, and which only an excessive sale could render profitable', had outpaced both the supply of engravers and the speed with which such fine plates could be executed. It was therefore to an adaptation of the tonal characteristics offered by the eighteenth century mezzotint that artists such as Fielding turned, to offer a speedier means of producing the softer tonal qualities demanded by the lastest taste. Written in the midst of this period of technical experimentation Fielding's manual is particularly important in detailing the engraver's response to new commercial pressures."The first book to have a chapter solely devoted to all aspects of photography" (Quayle). Particular reference is made to J.N. Niepce, who took the first photograph in 1826, but whose achievement was not made public until 1841, and there is also a section on Daguerre. "...contains information on what were then the most up-to-date matters, including lithography and electrography. Fielding quotes Partington extensively, almost verbatim in parts, describing his source as a "celebrated work on engraving", but he commences with a highly critical view of steel engraving and its evils, having very little to say in its favour. [Fieldings book] was used extensively a year or two later by W.L. Maberley, who published The Print Collector in 1844." from Hunnisett p34. see also Dyson, Pictures to Print p.118 for good reference to this work. Book excerpt: EIGHTEENTH-CENTURY mezzotint is England's chief glory in the history of engraving. In line-engraving and etching England had started a century behind the continent of Europe, and even then much of the best work produced for a considerable period was done by settlers from abroad. With mezzotint, too, the initiative came from abroad, for its inventor, Ludwig von Siegen, was a German amateur, and most of its earliest practitioners were German or Dutch. But very soon after the introduction of the new process, England became the chief centre of attraction to the best mezzotinters of the period, though it was not until the beginning of the eighteenth century that an entirely native school thoroughly vindicated the title of "la Manière Anglaise," by which the art was commonly known before the end of the seventeenth century. Von Siegen's discovery was first taken up by the famous Prince Rupert, and for a considerable period after John Evelyn's notice in his "Sculptura" (1662) of the "New way of engraving, or Mezzo Tinto, invented and communicated by his Highnesse Prince Rupert," fame or flattery assigned to the Prince the actual invention of the art. But though the discovery is now known not to have been his, he is justly famous in the history of the art for the most magnificent of the early mezzotints, the "Great Executioner" (after Ribera), which shows a real flair, and a far finer artistic feeling than anything of Von Siegen. It was no doubt Prince Rupert's interest in mezzotint when settled in England at the beginning of the reign of Charles II, that was the really determining factor in making England the centre of the art. The first century of mezzotint may be treated in a later volume of this series, but in the present place we plunge in medias res, illus- trating the period in which it reached its zenith. Van Dyck was just too early to be represented in contemporary mezzotint, so that the earliest mezzotinters largely reflect the paintings of Lely, Kneller, Vanderbank, and the host of lesser lights (chiefly foreigners) who still carried on the Van Dyck tradition. But the second part of the eighteenth century saw the establishment of a true English school of painting, and the great mezzotinters of this period find half their glory, and nearly all their popularity, in being the noblest translators into the less exclusive medium of engraving of the canvases of Reynolds, Gainsborough, Romney, and Hoppner.
