Book The Life of Lazarillo de Tormes

Download or read book The Life of Lazarillo de Tormes written by and published by McFarland. This book was released on 2005-07-14 with total page 166 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The beginning of the golden age of Spanish literature and the particular socio-political circumstances of early 16th century Spain made fertile ground for the emergence of the picaresque novel, an early form of the first-person narrative novel relating the adventures of a rogue or lowborn traveler (Spanish picaro) as he drifts through the Spanish countryside from one social milieu to another in an effort to survive. Influenced largely by the medieval tradition of the fabliaux and by the early Italian Renaissance, and structured upon a foundation of anecdotes, proverbs, popular beliefs, and folk tales, the picaro's discourse becomes a satirical survey of the hypocrisies and corruptions of society. The picaresque novel is exemplified by the prototypical and anonymously written Lazarillo de Tormes, published in 1554, in which the poor boy Lazaro describes his services under seven successive lay and clerical masters, each of whom hides a dubious character beneath a mask of hypocrisy. So piercing are its deliberate social criticisms, irreverent wit, anticlerical attitude and string of mischievous misadventures that Lazarillo was an entry in the 1559 Index of Prohibited Books. For the modern reader, the choice of characters and the backdrop for Lazarillo de Tormes reveal the heart of Spain's national dilemma after the crucial events of the 1520s. This dual-language, annotated critical edition of Lazarillo de Tormes presents the complete text of the novel in both English and Spanish. The translation attempts to capture in modern English not only the meaning of the historical text, but also the qualities of its original style.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A History of Spain The present work is an attempt to give in one volume the main features of Spanish history from the standpoint of America. It should serve almost equally well for residents of both the English-speaking and the Spanish American countries, since the underlying idea has been that Americans generally are concerned with the growth of that Spanish civilization which was transmitted to the new world. One of the chief factors in American life today is that of the relations between Anglo-Saxon and Hispanic America. They are becoming increasingly important. The southern republics themselves are forging ahead; on the other hand many of them are still dangerously weak, leaving possible openings for the not unwilling old world powers; and some of the richest prospective markets of the globe are in those as yet scantily developed lands. The value of a better understanding between the peoples of the two Americas, both for the reasons just named and for many others, scarcely calls for argument. It is almost equally clear that one of the essentials to such an understanding is a comprehension of Spanish civilization, on which that of the Spanish American peoples so largely depends. That information this volume aims to provide. It confines itself to the story of the growth of Spanish civilization in Spain, but its ultimate transfer to the Americas has been constantly in the writer's mind in the choice of his material, as will appear from the frequent allusions in the text. An attempt is made to treat Spanish institutions not as static (which they never were) but in process of evolution, from period to period. The development of Spanish institutions in the colonies and the later independent states, it is hoped, will be the subject of another volume. Book The Challenges of Uncertainty

Download or read book The Challenges of Uncertainty written by Jeremy Robbins and published by Rowman & Littlefield. This book was released on 1998 with total page 168 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This original and lucidly written book introduces the reader to the Baroque, the richest period of Spanish literature and culture. Jeremy Robbins shows how its creativity responded directly to the unprecedented sense of uncertainty fostered by developments across Europe. He argues that it was above all this scepticism which led Spaniards to employ literature and art to question the boundaries of reality and illusion. The result was the creation of some of the most inventive, entertaining, challenging and powerful works of imagination in Europe. Currently there exists no other concise introduction to Spanish Baroque literature and culture. The book considers in detail works by the major novelists, dramatists, poets and painters. Part of its novel approach is the attention the author gives to key issues such as honour and identity, the influence of social and literary institutions like the court and the church, and the place of women as both creators and consumers of culture. It also considers neglected literary forms, such as the aphorism and the emblem, as well as the immensely popular and influential political and moral writings of the day. A comprehensive glossary to major and minor figures is included.
