Book History of Socialism in the United States Classic Reprint

Download or read book History of Socialism in the United States Classic Reprint written by Morris Hillquit and published by . This book was released on 2015-06-29 with total page 404 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from History of Socialism in the United States Since the first appearance of this book (October, 1903), four editions of it have been printed without any change in the text. But now, when my publishers are about to send it out into the world for the fifth time, I feel that the task of subjecting it to a thorough revision can no longer be delayed. There are several reasons why such revision should be undertaken at this time. The last six years have been years of uncommon interest and eventfulness for the socialist movement of this country, and no history of the movement can claim to be complete without at least a brief record of these events. The task of bringing the narrative down to date has made necessary the addition of an entirely new and somewhat extended chapter. An attempt has also been made in this edition to analyze the character of the American socialist movement and to forecast its probable future. When the "History of Socialism in the United States" was first written, socialism was only beginning to gain a foothold in this country, and the organized socialist movement was barely in its formative stage. The Socialist Party, which, to-day represents the bulk of all organized socialist activities in the United States, was only two years old. Its following was small, and its policy was somewhat unsettled. During the last six years, the party has almost doubled the number of its voters and trebled its enrolled membership. It has largely extended and perfected its organization, and has evolved more fixt and efficient methods of action. Since its organization in 1901, the Socialist Party has held three conventions and has passed through two national political campaigns. Its mission and place in the politics of the country have become more definitely settled. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A History of Socialism For the study of socialism two things are essential on the part of the reader - good-will and the open mind. Socialism has at least a most powerful pro visional claim on our good-will, that it professes to represent the cause of the sufferers in the world's long agony, of the working - classes, of women, and of the down - trodden nations and races. If it can make any solid contribution in such a far-reaching cause it has the strongest right to be heard. Book A History of Socialism

Download or read book A History of Socialism written by Thomas Kirkup and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2015-06-25 with total page 506 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A History of Socialism The aim of the present book is twofold: to set forth the leading phases of the historic socialism, and to attempt a criticism and interpretation of the movement as a whole. In this edition the changes in the history are concerned chiefly with the revival of the International, which, since the Stuttgart Congress in 1907, may be regarded as an accomplished fact. I have made it no part of my plan to dwell on details. The interest and significance of the history of socialism will be found, not in its details and accidents, but in the development of its cardinal principles, which I have endeavoured to trace. Readers desirous of detail must be referred to the writings of the various socialists, or to works that treat of special phases of the movement. Yet I hope that the statement of the leading theories is sufficiently clear and adequate to enable the reader to form his own judgment of the highly controversial matters involved in the history of socialism. I may add that in every case my account is drawn from an extensive study of the sources. These sources I have given both in the text and in footnotes. For the more recent development of the subject, however, the material is derived from such a multitude of books, pamphlets, periodicals, and journals, as well as from personal inquiry and observation, that it has not been found practicable to indicate them. But the purely historical part of such a work is far from being the most difficult. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book A History of British Socialism Classic Reprint

Download or read book A History of British Socialism Classic Reprint written by Max Beer and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-10-09 with total page 386 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A History of British Socialism The book which is now published under the title A History of British Socialism, Volume was intended by the author to be the first of two volumes, the second of which would carry the story of British Socialism into the opening decade of the present century. The War intervened before the second volume was ready for the Press, and Mr. Beer, like most other students, was compelled for the time being to lay his literary work on one side. The first volume, therefore, is now published separately; the next, it is hoped, will appear on the return of peace. Together they will form the most complete account of the development of Socialist thought in Great Britain which has yet appeared. The subject of the present volume is the growth of Socialism down to the rise of Chartism, and its readers must remember that there is a sequel in which the story is completed. But the period with which it deals is sufficiently distinct to be studied separately, and the book is a unity, not a mutilated fragment. Book The New Socialism

Download or read book The New Socialism written by Jane T. Stoddart and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-01-30 with total page 282 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The New Socialism: An Impartial Inquiry The present book occupies, so far as I am aware, new ground among English books on Socialism. The larger historical books on the subject st0p short of recent years, and leave unchronicled much Socialist thought and action of the utmost importance. My aim has been to give as briefly and fairly as possible an account of the Socialist movement over the world during the last ten years. Like everything else, Socialism has undergone a process of change, and must be studied in the works of its latest authorities. Extreme utterances of individuals have been largely disregarded. In such a movement as Socialism much exaggeration was inevitable. But Socialism has its great thinkers and students, men as candid, as thoughtful, and as earnest as any to be found in other camps. These thinkers are constructive as well as destructive. They are not afraid to acknowledge the immense difficulties that have to be conquered ere the goal is reached, and they have taken them up in earnest, admitting in many cases that they are not yet completely solved. That Socialism is a movement full of mighty import to mankind, and that the questions which it raises may at any moment present themselves in their most practical form, is now obvious to all. It is only by understanding what Socialists ask for, and why they ask it, by studying their views and arguments in their best, most considered and most impressive form that any fruitful discussion can be carried on. Book A History of European Socialism

Download or read book A History of European Socialism written by Albert S. Lindemann and published by Yale University Press. This book was released on 1983-01-01 with total page 412 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is a serious and accomplished synthesis. . . . Biographical vignettes enliven the presentation of ideas, and references to studies of regional diversities . . . give the narrative an uncommonly rich texture. . . . Lucid and illuminating. . . . It is the best book on the subject to put into the hands of our students.--Helmut Gruber, International Labor and Working Class History A synthetic narrative by a young academic scholar . . . who has independent ideas on an important subject. . . . This book is worth reading if for no other reason than its modest, but nonpatronizing rehabilitation from generations of Marxist caricature of a host of deeply democratic European socialists.--James H. Billington, Washington Post Book World One asset of this book is its lack of the overbearing personal partisanship one finds in so many historical studies of socialism. . . . [Lindeman incorporates] some recent and inaccessible studies in social history written 'from the bottom up.'--David D'Arcy, World View As a whole, Lindemann offers a more balanced treatment of the ideas and the movement of socialism than found in many extant histories. . . . A must for all college and university libraries.--Choice A competent and fair-minded study of a controversial subject. It presents much factual material and judicious interpretation in lucid prose.--L. S. Stavrianos, Los Angeles Times Book Review

Book Karl Marx and Modern Socialism Classic Reprint

Download or read book Karl Marx and Modern Socialism Classic Reprint written by F. R. Salter and published by . This book was released on 2015-06-30 with total page 276 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Karl Marx and Modern Socialism This book is not in any way an anti-collectivist pamphlet; nor does it claim to be either an original or a profound study of Marxism. But the life of Marx is so little known, either by friend or foe, and his teaching so often reduced to a few bald shibboleths, that there may perhaps be room for a sketch of him as he was in relation to the thought and the circumstances of his age, describing at the same time, in rough outline, the development of the labour movements of Europe to whose growth he contributed so much. The writer is one of those who are so genially described in certain quarters as "class-biassed teachers in Universities," but he can plead practical knowledge of W.E.A. Tutorial Classes as, in some sense at least, a corrective to academic prejudice, and he is anyhow old-fashioned enough to doubt whether the writing of history must of necessity be only a class, or mass, interpretation of the past. Marx has certainly had less than justice done him hitherto because class interpretations have made him out as either an impeccable hero or a worthless ruffian: this deluge of praise and blame, in each case so often entirely undiscriminating, has had the effect of turning into an inhuman and almost legendary figure one who was in point of fact a very lovable, very exasperating but essentially real, though often wrong-headed, enthusiast. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Larger Socialism The Socialist remedy for the ills which confront society is, of course, the public ownership and the democratic management of all industry of social value. On the whole, the answer is definite and positive. True, the Socialist ranks harbor various opinions as to what constitutes democratic management. One camp maintains that the Socially-valuable industries, after becoming publicly-owned, should be operated by the Government. Another camp, feeling more compellingly the call of syndicalism and guild socialism, would have the publicly-owned industries operated primarily by their workers. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Socialists and Socialism F you've nothing else to do and are at all interested in the subject, suppose you come along with me, and have a look at the Howling Dervishes. It takes all sorts of folks to make a world, you know, and the Howling Dervish is a time-honored institution. He has enormous faith in himself, and no amount of the opposition literature could exterminate him. He's a fix ture, the Howling D. Is, and we must reconcile ourselves to him, as we do to other inevitable and unescapable actualities. The most amusing thing about the modern H. Dervish is, that he considers himself something new under the sun. He isn't. Plato dreamed of him; ancient Sparta knew him well: each savage tribe had to shake him off and even the American colonies experimented with him. In their young and silly days. But the Socialists of our time bitterly deny the possession of a historic lineage, and wildly claim originality as they bowl and whirl. If you have no decided preference as to what part of the Socialist capon shall be put on your plate, I'll begin with young Robert Hunter. Young Robert is the Socialist leader who worked a get-rich-quick scheme by marrying a millionaire's daughter, - after which he published a book on Poverty, and began to wear pink socks. The second part consists of a paper contributed, in June, 1909, to the North American Review, and reprinted here, slightly revised, through the courtesy of the editor and publishers of that periodical. The third and last consists of a stenographic report of a lecture delivered in Cooper Union, New York City, under the auspices of the Peoples Institute, revised for this publication. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Socialist Movement One of the greatest of the difficulties which beset the path of the Socialist is the refusal on the part of his opponents to give an accu rate statement Oi what Socialism means and what the purpose of Socialism is. The main object of this book is to explain both. The Editors have asked a Conservative to explain Conservatism and a Liberal to interpret Liber alism, and have on the same principle turned to me to write about Socialism. It is, perhaps, best that doctrines which are the objects Of fierce assault should be explained by writers who believe in them, for, whether a doctrine is or is not to have a lasting influence depends not on the success with which clever critics attack some of its outworks, nor on the amount of error which creeps into its popular advocacy, but on the amount of truth which it really con tains, and that is more familiar to friend than to foe.
