Book Religious Instruction in State Schools

Download or read book Religious Instruction in State Schools written by David John Garland and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-02-15 with total page 282 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Religious Instruction in State Schools: Statement Prepared by the Rev. Canon D. J. Garland for the Education Committee of the Parliament of New Zealand Contrast this settlement with New Zealand, where there have been agitations, more or less continuous, since 1877, asking for religious instruction, seven Bills in Parliament. Attempting to deal with the problem. Not one Bill for repea'. Or even for modification in the Australian States after the system was established, and no agitation except from the Roman Catholic Church, which in New Zealand also has agita ted, though there is no religious instruction in State schools. It is not urged by the League that there is complete and universal satisfaction, or even that the system is abso lately perfect, for there is nothing under the sun which gives complete and universal satisfaction - objectors are to be found to anything and everything. It is admitted, and never has been claimed to the contrary, that the Roman Catholic Church opposes the system of religious instruction advocated by the League; but it is pointed out that that Church is also opposedto the secular system of education, and advocates a system of denominational schools supported by the State. On the other hand, every other Christian Church which has expressed itself in Australia stands by the national school system, provided it includes the religious instruction system referred to. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Christianity Among the New Zealanders It may seem to many persons a most unfavourable time for pubKshing to the world a book on Christian Missions, but more particularly one which professes to give an account of Christianity among the New Zealanders. For some years every mail from New Zealand has been the bearer of intelligence respecting a war, during the course of which there have been many events recorded, showing the Maoris to be a bold and brave people, ready to fight to the last for what they consider to be their rights: but they do not tend to give a very favourable impression of the Christianity which that people are said to have received. But more particularly the development of the Hauhau fanaticism with all its horrid rites, and the cruel murder of poor Volkner, has given too much reason for the public to ask: "Is this the Christianity of the New Zealanders? Have the large sums of money spent upon this work during fifty years, and the labours of your Missionaries - valuable men who would have done good service in any other occupation - produced no better result?
