Book Christian Education Its History and Philosophy

Download or read book Christian Education Its History and Philosophy written by Kenneth O. Gangel and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2002-03-05 with total page 395 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: ÒA history of Christian education must not be confused with a record of the achievements of the Sunday School. The discipline has advanced well beyond that stage, and today's sophisticated students fully understand that no proper concept of the history and philosophy of Christian education can be gained without seeing all the ramifications, implications, and influences that have affected it from pre-Christian times to the present.Ó So Drs. Gangel and Benson have written this book, a historical flow of philisophical thought from a Christian point of view. Its focus is cultural-biographical, discussing each philosophy in its particular socio-historical setting, and giving special attention to significant individuals. The format is chronological, beginning with education in biblical times, working upward through history to arrive at the present - and beyond, raising questions and issues for the future.

Book Religion Education and Academic Success

Download or read book Religion Education and Academic Success written by William Jeynes and published by IAP. This book was released on 2003-08-01 with total page 278 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The goal of this book is to examine the relationship between religion and academic success, both historically and in modern society. Very few books are dedicated to examining this very important topic. In addition, to this date there has never been a published quantitative meta-analysis examining the effects of religiosity and religious schools on academic outcomes. It is my hope that this book will be a useful tool for educators, researchers, professors, and parents who desire to examine this relevant and practical area of study. Our nation owes much of its educational foundation to the religious orientation of many of its founders, educational pioneers, and educational reformers. Although educational historians used to focus on the religious and moral orientation of people like Noah Webster, Horace Mann, Johann Pestalozzi, Emma Willard, Friedrich Froebel, and many others, contemporary educational historians inappropriately omit the religious roots of these individuals.

Divided into several sections the book open with chapters covering the most influential general books on religion and schooling and offers summaries and analysis of court decisions and commentaries on the issues of government aid and regulation. The book goes on to provide entries of the schools operating in the United States by seventeen religious groups, entries are annotated by experts from the field. The final section of the book considers statements on religious schools made by both public school educators and religious school advocates; formal and informal interactions between the public and religious schools; and the concept of the education of the public by religious and public schools. This work pulls together a wealth of reference material, mainly on religious schools, and provides a much-needed resource for those interested in religious schooling, whether researcher, scholar, student or policy-maker.

Download or read book Religious Freedom written by Tisa Wenger and published by UNC Press Books. This book was released on 2017-08-31 with total page 313 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Religious freedom is so often presented as a timeless American ideal and an inalienable right, appearing fully formed at the founding of the United States. That is simply not so, Tisa Wenger contends in this sweeping and brilliantly argued book. Instead, American ideas about religious freedom were continually reinvented through a vibrant national discourse--Wenger calls it "religious freedom talk--that cannot possibly be separated from the evolving politics of race and empire. More often than not, Wenger demonstrates, religious freedom talk worked to privilege the dominant white Christian population. At the same time, a diverse array of minority groups at home and colonized people abroad invoked and reinterpreted this ideal to defend themselves and their ways of life. In so doing they posed sharp challenges to the racial and religious exclusions of American life. People of almost every religious stripe have argued, debated, negotiated, and brought into being an ideal called American religious freedom, subtly transforming their own identities and traditions in the process. In a post-9/11 world, Wenger reflects, public attention to religious freedom and its implications is as consequential as it has ever been.
