Download or read book A History of Persia Vol 1 of 2 written by Percy Molesworth Sykes and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2015-06-27 with total page 739 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A History of Persia, Vol. 1 of 2 Just a century has elapsed since the publication of Sir John Malcolm's History of Persia. In this long period the mystery of the cuneiform inscriptions has been solved, Susa has yielded up its secrets, and in many other directions a notable advance has been effected. Each important discovery has been embodied in some work of special value, but no book has been written dealing with Persia as a whole and embodying the rich fruits of this modern research. After much hesitation I have attempted to fill what is undoubtedly a serious gap; for Persia has exercised considerable influence, extending over many centuries, on Greece, on the Roman Empire, and consequently on Europe. My primary aim has been to furnish fellow-officials serving in Persia and adjoining countries, and students, whether European or Persian, with a work which is, as far as possible, self-contained and complete. With this object I have focused what is known of the ancient empires in their relations with Elam, Media, and Persia; and I have dealt somewhat more fully than would otherwise have been necessary with such subjects as the rise of Macedonia. Download or read book Ancient History written by Charles Rollin and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-02-03 with total page 142 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Charles Rollin, a French historian and educator, took it upon himself to write compendiums of Ancient history. Rollin's Ancient History: History of the Persians is an in depth look at Persia through geography, politics, and history. The book begins exploring the "Physical History of Persia" which refers to the provinces of Persia. While exploring the Western, Eastern, and Central provinces, Rollin also goes into depth on specific places such as Gedrosia, Carmania, and Arachosia. Rollin also explores topical elements such as mountains, rivers, and lakes of note. In addition, he examines the climate of Persia and the multitude of things Persia produces. This physical history is a solid foundation for further exploration of Persia. The next section of the book explores political history. Rollins examines the power of Persian kings. He also discusses the Seven State Counselors, and administrative powers. In addition, he looks at both military power and priestly power in Persia. Rollin knows that understanding the political history of Persia helps the reader get a greater understanding of Persia as a whole. To increase the reader's knowledge of Persian politics, Rollin dedicates the next section to discussing specific Persian Kings and their reigns. Ultimately, it is the politics of Persia that truly interest Rollin and he dedicates the end of the book to discussing that and its importance. But while dynasties are ruled by kings and are powerful at one point in time, Rollin leaves the reader with a final thought: "In this age, power and empire are in the hands of one people; in the next, a nation unheard of before comes forth, and rudely plucks it from their hands. By whose direction do these things occur?" About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Persia, Vol. 1: The Land of the Magi or the Home of the Wise Men Dear Readers: In presenting to you this volume on his native land, the author wishes to say that in undertaking to describe so extensive and celebrated a region as the Persian Empire, he is by no means insensible to the difficulty of the task on which he enters. The subject is wide and intricate, while the sources of information are frequently imperfect, or obscure; but it has been his study by adopting a distinct arrangement, and by consulting the best authorities, to present his readers with a correct and complete picture of that interesting portion of Western Asia. Being a native and personally acquainted with many parts of the country, he has availed himself of the observations of the greater number of modem travelers, both to correct his own opinions and to supply additional facts, in describing: Persia-Its history. Political character of the Persian Empire. The King, his Court and his Palace. Civil and Criminal Law. Account of the provinces of Persia. The antiquities of Persia. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Persia and the Persians The use of i in the spelling of Oriental words where e, for those employing the English language, would more correctly represent the actual pronunciation, is an anomaly that can be accounted for only on the ground that the Latins preceded the anglo-saxons in the East, and with them i is always 6. But in retaining the Latin orthography we forget that t in the Continental languages never has the long i sound peculiar to the English tongue.
