Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A History of Peeblesshire I Had long entertained a wish to write a history of my native county, but the obligations of a busy life, independently of other reasons, postponed the undertaking until, after an absence of six-and-thirty years, I returned to dwell amidst scenes, of which I had treasured up some recollections and traditions. I was not without an excuse for having formed this desire. The only available book on the subject was the Description of Tweeddale, by Dr Alexander Pennicuik of Romanno, issued originally in 1715, and re-issued with notes in 1815, by the late Mr Brown of Newhall. Besides being out of date, Pennicuiks work, though in many respects curious and valuable, is little else than a topographic and botanical recital. After making a survey of the county in 1775, Captain Armstrong issued his Companion to the Map of Tweeddale, but this tract, while embracing some useful facts, is also chiefly topographic, and has been long out of sight. The next book concerning the shire, was a General View of the Agriculture of the County of Peebles, by the Rev. Charles Findlater, minister of Newlands, issued in 1802. Book Glimpses of Peebles Or Forgotten Chapters in Its History

Download or read book Glimpses of Peebles Or Forgotten Chapters in Its History written by Alex Williamson and published by . This book was released on 2016-06-15 with total page 364 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Glimpses of Peebles, or Forgotten Chapters in Its History: With Illustrations The author cherishes the hope that the Glimpses may not be unacceptable to dwellers in his native town; to such as have left it to reside in other parts of the Kingdom, only visiting now and again the scenes of their youth; and to those who, though they have made their homes in far-distant lands, retain bright memories of the green hills, silent glens, sparkling burns of Peeblesshire, the hoary ruins on which they often looked, and the old landmarks of the once quiet, quaint, restful burgh. Change has gradually crept over Peebles. No longer a sleepy hollow, as it was deemed still as the grave, according to Lord Cockburn it now exhibits evidences of manufacturing and mercantile activity. It possesses large mills devoted to the celebrated Tweed trade; the population is rapidly increasing; new streets and numerous villas have sprung up, covering what were, in the recollection of many people, green fields or luxuriant gardens. The improvements of 1846 swept away the last relics of former days outside stairs, prominent wells, arched pends - and enforced a uniformity to which our fathers were strangers. The aspect of the main streets is now obtrusively modern, and few and far between are the vestiges of earlier times. Railway stations, with their inevi table accompaniments, have obliterated the grassy haughs and well-stocked nurseries which were familiar to the last generation. Modern enterprise has transformed Peebles. It has planted a magviii preface. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book A History of Yealmpton

Download or read book A History of Yealmpton written by H. J. Warner and published by . This book was released on 2015-06-30 with total page 108 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A History of Yealmpton: Devonshire In venturing to put forth this history of the Parish of Yealmpton, no one is more conscious than the author of those defects which, in pioneer work, are almost inevitable. His object will have been attained if these very faults should stir another to compile a history so complete and accurate as to supersede this first attempt. Meanwhile, no apology need be made for endeavouring to put people in possession of a record of the parish in which they live, or with which they are intimately associated, and to tell them the parochial "Traditions of the saint and sage, Tales that have the rime of age, And chronicles of eld." Such knowledge must surely give us a wider view of things, quicken and deepen interest in the present by noting its connection with the past, furnish material for thought and conversation, and stimulate comparison and inquiry. In this parochial record, many now living will recognise their forbears, and realise that what their fathers did "in the old time before them," in the ordinary course of daily duty, has not been lost in Lethe's stream, but survives in forms from which they themselves derive benefit. This should encourage us not to "despise the day of small things," but "to do our duty in that state of life unto which it shall please God to call us." For "Time is hastening on, and we What our fathers were, shall be, Shadow-shapes of memory. Who shall work for us as well The antiquarian's miracle? Who shall give to me and thee Freeholds in futurity?" For assistance in collecting material for this work, the author begs to tender his very hearty thanks to, amongst others, Mr. Kershaw, the Librarian of Lambeth Palace: Mr. Hubert Hall and other officials, of the Public Record Office: Mr. Burch, of the Exeter Diocesan Registrar's Office: and especially to Prebendary Hingeston-Randolph, Rector of Ringmore. His "Episcopal Registers of the Diocese of Exeter" have furnished information otherwise inaccessible: in the preparation of this work, his advice was never sought in vain, and he most kindly read through the manuscript when completed, and suggested many improvements which have been gratefully adopted. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The History of the Town and County of Poole: Collected and Arranged From Ancient Records and Other Authentic Documents, and Deduced From the Earliest Period to the Present Time It is not presumed that this volume approaches to that form which should be presented by a complete work of the kind; but it is believed that those who feel any interest in the town of Poole, or in topography as a study, will here find much never before published, many facts now first brought to light. The classification adopted will, I hope, render the work one of easy reference. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
