XXXVII THE RECENT HISTORY OF NORWAY Since the great crisis which terminated in the impeachment of Prime Minister Selmer, the history of Norway has continued somewhat turbulent, although within the bounds of legality; and the contest between the nation and the crown has not yet been decided. Howbeit certain other matters have intervened alongside of the strictly constitutional agitation. Norway has followed the precedent of all other nations which tend towards democracy in associating attacks upon the Church with attempts to limit the power of the crown. The position of the country parson in Norway is one of considerable power and influence. He is, of course, a better educated man than the peasants by whom he is surrounded. Through his glebe he is a landowner; and where all estates are small he may be reckoned a considerable one. He is ex-offieio chairman of the District Board School; and he is very frequently chosen to represent his electoral district in the Storthing. It is this last fact which makes the Norwegian clergyman a more powerful person than his English colleague. We have not a pleasant picture of this pastor (praest) in Ibsen's writings; in the Straamand of " Love's Comedy," or the Dean (Provost) of" Brand." In fact, as we might guess, the literary class and the scientific {the illuminati) are his natural enemies. That he has his fair share of formalism and insincerity we may well suppose. But in any case it was inevitable that the new democracy, impatient of every kind of restraint, should begin a war against the influence of the Church. 1 By C. F. Keary, author of " The Vikings in Western Christendom," "Norway and the Norwegians," &c. For now the Liberal party began to split itself up; and democracy, as in other...

Book excerpt: The History of Norway - From Brutal Battle of World War II To Present Day Most of Scandinavia has been covered by ice at least three times, and the last ice melted about 14,000 years ago. The first traces of man in Norway dates back to sometime after 10,000 BC and they came both from the South and the North East. The Viking Age (793-1066 AD) For more than three centuries, the Vikings voyaged and invaded neighboring countries. Little by little they acquired national identities and became Swedes, Danes and Norwegians. Local chieftains were administrating their own areas of the country until Harald Hårfagre united Norway into one kingdom and became the first king around 885. The fundamental element for the Vikings was the ships, the instrument and symbol of Viking expansion. Due to the exceptional qualities and navigational skills, they spread across Europe, down the Caspian Sea, to Greenland and Iceland, and in the year 1000 to North America, where Leif Eriksson reached the American continent – about five hundred years earlier than Christopher Columbus. At that time Norway became a Christian country and the ruling king oppressed the Viking religion, but many people continued to hold on to the old beliefs. Traces of this Nordic mythology can still be seen in the names of the days of the week and in Norwegian holiday celebrations. To be continued... They were also the first people to settle in Iceland and the Faroes Islands. They also founded the first true cities of Ireland. Although Vikings are a huge part of the history of Norway, the era in which they lived was very short. Norway wasn't a defined country or even a region in its early history. It was geographically, culturally, and linguistically inseparable from the rest of Scandinavia. Therefore, its history is deeply influenced by not only its inhabitants but also its neighbors. Norway is a unique country located on the fringes of Europe. Its climate and geographical position determined the lifestyle of the people inhabiting it. It was never an easy life. The constant scarcity of arable land, the vast distances they had to traverse due to the myriad of fjords and mountains, and the long and harsh winters in the inland areas made Norwegians constantly struggle for a better life. Norway was also often a target of much stronger neighboring kingdoms, mainly Denmark and Sweden. From the 16th to 19th centuries, Norway was part of a union with first Denmark and then Sweden. None of the unions was a Norwegian choice. And even though the people were aware of the deep connection they shared with the rest of Scandinavia, they had a distinctive Norwegian identity. It was this identity that pushed Norway to fight for its independence. Read more to find out: Where did the first Norwegians come from? How did the early Bronze Age societies live in the harsh environment of Scandinavia? Why did the Iron Age come so late to Scandinavia? Were the Vikings simply pirates or farmers with a higher cause?
