Historians may be skeptical regarding the tales that make up coastal folklore, but these pages contain more than a collection of barrier beach legends--they offer a fresh approach to Fire Island's past. Weaving documents and maps left behind by ordinary people of the time into a dramatic historical narrative, each chapter contributes to a remarkably vivid and exciting portrait Fire Island's heritage.Warren McDowell is a historian and folklorist with a deep interest in the legend, lore, and authenticity of Fire Island--how it got its name, its truth, myths, and legends from the Vikings, Dutch, English, and the accounts of modern-day counterparts. Fire Island Saga passes to a new generation of scholars the opportunity to study the events that took place so many years ago and made Fire Island the destination it is today.

Book Genealogies of Long Island Families

Download or read book Genealogies of Long Island Families written by and published by . This book was released on 1987 with total page 822 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since its inception in 1870, "The New York Genealogical and Biographical Record" has been at the forefront in publishing articles on Long Island families, many of them lengthy, definitive studies spread out over several issues. In a number of these articles the English or Dutch origin of families is established. No better purpose could be served than to gather these articles together and reprint them in their entirety, thus making available a mass of information on Long Island families that has previously been difficult to locate. With the articles appropriately consolidated and arranged, and additions and corrections from "The Record" properly appended, this two-volume compilation becomes the single greatest repository of Long Island genealogies in existence. In addition, it is fully indexed and is published with an introduction by Henry B. Hoff, former editor of "The Record."

Book Lutherans in Western New York

Download or read book Lutherans in Western New York written by Julianna Fiddler-Woite and published by Arcadia Publishing. This book was released on 2015-10-12 with total page 128 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: During the construction of the Erie Canal in the early 1820s, the population of Western New York increased 145 percent. Many of these pioneers were European immigrants, with a high concentration hailing from the German-speaking states. These immigrants brought their Lutheran ideals and continued to practice the religion in their new homeland. By 1827, the first official Lutheran church in Erie County had been incorporated as the German Reformed Church, known today as St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Eggertsville. Soon after, the need for mission churches arose, and by the mid-1800s, Lutheran congregations had been established in several Western New York suburbs. During the following century, the Lutherans in Western New York would undergo growth and change. While all congregations eventually abandoned German as their primary language, many struggled to further separate from their German roots during the Nazi regime. Today, there are nearly 200 Lutheran congregations in New York.
