The vision of the movement's founder, Ebenezer Howard, drew on many strands of political and utopian thought, and initially aimed at addressing the problems of an increasingly urban and dysfunctional society along 'the peaceful path to real reform'. It took only five years, from 1898 to 1903 for the idea to take root in the open fields of North Hertfordshire, when Earl Grey proclaimed the Letchworth Garden City Estate open. Letchworth was followed by Hampstead Garden Suburb, Welwyn Garden City and numerous smaller developments, and Garden City ideas informed both inter-war housing policy and New Town planning after the Second World War. Never intended to be merely a pleasant place to live, it needed to be large enough to encourage the mass movement of manufacturers and their employees from overcrowded cities and to function as a self-supporting new town. In this richly illustrated account, Letchworth Local History Research Group look in detail at the town's foundation in the early 1900s and the energetic organisation and administration that enabled it to get off the ground quickly and successfully. Based on new research into a wealth of source material, the book puts to rest some of the enduring myths about the garden city, revealing a nuanced picture of the founding of a working community. The collaborative efforts of First Garden City Ltd (FGC), the development company for the new town, are a key focus. Extremely well-connected, experienced and highly influential, the senior management of FGC (including Ebenezer Howard), together with a team of engineers as well as architects Barry Parker and Raymond Unwin, were able to provide key infrastructure and sites for development in keeping with a clear strategy. Starting life as Letchworth Adult Education Settlement, it soon became part of the wider Educational Settlement Association, following the example of Toynbee Hall in London, and is now one of few such institutions still up and running. In its early days, the Settlement embodied the ideals of the young garden city with its ethos of self-help. There was a strong belief that everyone was entitled to an education and to fulfil their potential; the unemployed in the town were regularly helped with free classes and meals. In 1925 the Settlement moved to the former premises of the Skittles Inn in Nevells Road, which it still calls home today. Despite a lack of funds, the number of classes grew steadily and associated societies were formed, including the Settlement Players and the camera club (both still in existence) as well as a choir and orchestra and rambling and camping clubs. The building was listed grade II in 1979; in 1995 the then Letchworth Corporation bought the building and leased it back to the Settlement, ensuring a secure future for an institution seen as an integral part of life in Letchworth. In this lively history, former Hertfordshire County Archivist Kate Thompson looks at the wider context in which the organisation flourished, as well as notable members of staff and key events in its century of sharing knowledge.

The early Garden City movement, as represented by the writings of Ebenezer Howard--particularly his book Tomorrow: A Peaceful Path to Real Reform (1898)--was a concerted attempt to redefine many urban practices. The Garden City strove to unite town and country through the garden, it emerged as a direct response to what were perceived to be the evils of the large industrial cities of the nineteenth century. The field of landscape ecology provides a structural method for examining the behavior of landscapes, by focusing on flow, patch, and boundary systems. These are examined in the urban context, along with the broad topic of agency. Ecological factors are complemented by Gilles Deleuze and Félix Guattari's concept of "assemblage," with its emphasis on territorial, cultural, and formal factors. This provides the material for a study of the theories of Ebenezer Howard and the early history of Letchworth Garden City. This includes exploring the central role of gardens, farms, and the greenbelt in the Garden City model, along with agents such as the gardener, farmer, and manager. The Garden City also pioneered modern town-planning, and contributed in such areas as planned neighborhoods, housing design, streetscape composition, architectural controls, controlled growth, urban zoning, greenspace organization, and regional responsiveness.

First published in 1898, To-Morrow attempted to improve the material condition of working-class families through a vision of new communities which would provide a better quality of life. Howard's legacy grew throughout the twentieth century in garden cities, suburbs, and green towns; a century later, architects and planners are still motivated by his ideas.
