Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Bucks County was one of Pennsylvania's original counties. This work includes references to all persons found in the land records, with the goal of revealing information useful to genealogical research. These land records include deeds, leases, releases, mortgages, agreements and declarations of trust. From these records, one can discover an ancestor's family relationships, occupation, neighbors and perhaps even a little about his lifestyle, including debts and lawsuits. Some of these land records provide the name of the owner as far back as the 1680s, when the original grantee received the patent from William Penn. The entries are arranged in the order they were recorded in the deed books, and the original page number is included. A full name index rounds out this useful resource.

Book Early Pennsylvania Land Records

Download or read book Early Pennsylvania Land Records written by Pennsylvania. Land Office and published by . This book was released on 1893 with total page 804 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Shortly after William Penn was granted the tract of land known as Pennsylvania by King Charles II in 1680, he began offering 'rights' to a set number of acres for investors. These 'rights' were generally offered in lots of 5,000 acres, but 'rights' for smaller tracts were allowed, the minimum purchase size being 250 acres. The purchaser would receive a warrant in exchange for his money. This warrant provided proof of his right to select a tract of land of specific size, not already claimed, once he arrived in America. Once suitable land was located, the purchaser then applied to the Surveyor General for a survey, which once completed enabled the purchaser to apply for a patent, when he could afford the fee. Originally published as Volume XIX of the Second Series of the Pennsylvania Archives in 1893, this work contains the Minutes of the Board of Property beginning with Book C, which is believed to be the earliest legible collection of property records, and continuing on through Book I. Covering the time frame from March 13, 1687 through March 30, 1732, this 2 volume set is essential for anyone wishing to research early Pennsylvania genealogy. For each property the board assesses in these records, a history of the tract is given, providing a considerable amount of genealogical information about the family who owned the land. The original surname index has been included.

It was undertaken from a desire to preserve interesting facts, connected with its settle ment and history, that in a few years would have been lost forever; and no reasonable compensation would reward us for the seven yc-ars' labor bestowed upon it. We labored under many ditliculties. Its story had never been written, and the material, in a great measure, had to be first gathered in isolated facts and then woven into the thread of history. This was the most difficult part of our task. In most cases individuals and families gave up their papers for ex amination, which proved of great assistance. With the lapse of years the material grow upon our hands beyond our anticipations, and we could have written a larger work, but are content to give the result of our labors in a volume not too large for convenient use. Our greatest diflieulty was in collecting matter relating to the set tlement and early history of the German townships, because they were less in the habit of preserving family and personal records. We consulted the most reliable records and authorities to be reached, and are satisfied it contains as few errors as could reason ably be expected in a work of the kind.
