Book excerpt: Excerpt from A History of the Gothic Revival: An Attempt to Show How the Taste for Mediaeval Architecture Which Lingered in England During the Two Last Centuries Has Since Been Encouraged and Developed If any preface to this book be needed, it should perhaps take the form of an ample apology for the time which has elapsed between its original announcement and its publication. During that interval, and in such leisure as more urgent duties left at my disposal, I gradually realised the difficulties of the task which I had undertaken. It has been said of contemporary history that its events are less easy to ascertain with accuracy than those of past time. For my own part, and in reference to this work, I can testify to the fact that much information which I imagined might be obtained for the asking has cost me more trouble to procure than that which required literary research. As it is, I fear that the following pages will be found deficient in many details, the omission of which I regret, not because it affects in any material degree the thread of my narrative, but because in describing works of equal merit or importance I had hoped to bestow an equal attention on each, and this, in the absence of necessary particulars respecting some of them, has not always been possible. Book Architecture Gothic and Renaissance Classic Reprint

Download or read book Architecture Gothic and Renaissance Classic Reprint written by T. Roger Smith and published by . This book was released on 2016-06-13 with total page 286 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: T. Roger Smith's "Architecture Gothic and Renaissance" will inform the reader on the history, features, and famous examples of great architectural works dating from the 12th century until the 18th century. The book begins where many books would end - with an illustrated glossary. Smith's decision to open "Architecture Gothic and Renaissance" in this way is enormously beneficial to the reader, particularly one who is not an expert in architectural terms. Following this glossary and an introduction, the book proceeds neatly through the ages, with each chapter devoted to architecture in a different part of the world. There is an examination of gothic architecture in England and continental Europe, which has been divided into geographic regions. There is also an examination of Renaissance architecture, which focuses mainly on France and Italy but also explores other parts of the world. The reader will conclude this book having gained a fairly detailed picture of European architecture in the periods highlighted. Author T. Roger Smith is nothing if not thorough. From the opening glossary the reader is made aware that this book is intended for serious study. Rarely does the book fail to provide fine details on the architectural concepts discussed. Ultimately, "Architecture Gothic and Renaissance" succeeds in furthering the knowledge of the reader in a relatively entertaining fashion. Those keenly interested in architecture, specifically Gothic and Renaissance works, will doubtless find this to be an enjoyable read. Book The Cathedrals of Great Britain

Download or read book The Cathedrals of Great Britain written by P. H. Ditchfield and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-03-23 with total page 506 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Cathedrals of Great Britain: Their History and Architecture In this volume I have attempted to give an architectural description of all the cathedral churches of England, Wales, and Scotland, together with a brief history of each see. In order to include any adequate account of each church and bishopric in one volume of portable size, which may be of use to visitors in their travels, much compression has been necessary, but it is hoped that nothing of importance has been omitted which might be useful to those who would read aright the architectural history of our great churches. On account of their immense importance in the history of Gothic art, it has been thought well to include in this volume some account of the churches of Westminster and Beverley. At the close of each history of a cathedral will be found a record of the principal building dates and dimensions, and also a brief account of the chief places and churches of interest in the city or neighbourhood which it is advisable to visit. Book A History of Gothic Art in England

Download or read book A History of Gothic Art in England written by Edward S. Prior and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2015-06-26 with total page 485 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A History of Gothic Art in England In the vast field of archæology, which opens widely before the historian of Gothic Art, the author admits his many disabilities, many ignorances, and much of his knowledge to be superficial or second-hand. Still, his aim has been less to tabulate the conclusions of archæology than to exhibit the broad impulses of design as being the vital expressions of English Gothic; and for this purpose he has gone rather to the buildings themselves than to the experts of archæological detail. In two points only has he attempted something more than generalization: First, in the distinction of the English style, as a true line of Gothic creation, native in its origin and in its progress, and separate by its qualities from the continental styles; Secondly, as to the existence in the English art of local schools and centres of craft, which made distinct sub-styles in their districts. His survey of the cathedrals and most of the monastic remains and larger parish churches of England has given him opinions which, on the one hand, are at variance with the assertion of the great French architecture being the mother of all the Gothics, sending her children into all the countries of north-west Europe; and, on the other, with the idea of a central Masonic Guild, whose organization monopolized the arts of design for all the centuries of mediæval church-building. He has found rather national and local variation than European solidarity in Gothic, and would wish to point to the constant English tradition as proof, since the Conquest, of a native craftsmanship, free alike from continental importation and Masonic dictation. His survey of English examples has, however, brought him face to face with the obliterations of this national and local history in our art that have come from the methods of the Gothic Revival during the last sixty years. Very often it has been necessary to correct present-day appearances by the evidence of prints and drawings made before "restoration." Among such he must express his especial indebtedness to the collections of measured and other drawings of architectural students, published in the sketch-books of the Architectural Association, and in those which bear the name of Spring Gardens and John of Gaunt. Book Canterbury and the Gothic Revival

Download or read book Canterbury and the Gothic Revival written by Lawrence Lyle and published by The History Press. This book was released on 2013-01-01 with total page 173 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Canterbury Cathedral's medieval Gothic image survived centuries of religious discord, neglect and Georgian 'improvements'. From 1800, a new generation was re-inspired by the prevalent architectural and artistic 'Gothick' vogue. At this time, a passionately ambitious young architect, William Butterfield, created a Gothic missionary college in two years, and the Dean of Canterbury, who wanted the Cathedral to rival St Peter's, Rome, began the rolling repair programme continuing in today's Appeal. Priests, bishops and Gothic enthusiasts carried the style from there to parish churches, industrial cities and the colonies. With more than fifty illustrations, including a striking colour section, this book will delight lovers of Canterbury and of the Gothic style everywhere.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For forty years, this widely acclaimed classic has remained unsurpassed as an introduction to art in the Western world, boasting the matchless credibility of the Janson name. This newest update features a more contemporary, more colorful design and vast array of extraordinarily produced illustrations that have become the Janson hallmark. A narrative voice makes this book a truly enjoyable read, and carefully reviewed and revised updates to this edition offer the utmost clarity in contributions based on recent scholarship. Extensive captions for the book’s incredible art program offer profound insight through the eyes of twentieth-century art historians speaking about specific pieces of art featured throughout. Significantly changed in this edition is the chapter on “The Late Renaissance,” in which Janson offers a new perspective on the subject, tracing in detail the religious art tied to the Catholic Reform movement, whose early history is little known to many readers of art history. Janson has also rearranged early Renaissance art according to genres instead of time sequence, and he has followed the reinterpretation of Etruscan art begun in recent years by German and English art historians. With a truly humanist approach, this book gives written and visual meaning to the captivating story of what artists have tried to express—and why—for more than 30,000 years.

Book Art in England During the Elizabethan and Stuart Periods Classic Reprint

Download or read book Art in England During the Elizabethan and Stuart Periods Classic Reprint written by Aymer Vallance and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-03-23 with total page 210 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Art in England During the Elizabethan and Stuart Periods Nor was the spirit of Hamanism in letters so closely allied with, nor so propitious to the Renaissance as is claimed for it. Had such really been the case the Universities, as chief seats of learning in the Kingdom, must have been the first to be affected by it and would be bearing today visible tokens of the same in the aspect of their buildings. But, to judge by the evidence which those buildings afford, the very opposite is the truth. It was in academic Oxford that the practice of Gothic, ailing and doomed, it must be confessed, but alive still, lingered longest. Thus, in 1640 (that is after an interval of nearly three centuries from the first appearance of fan - vaulting, in the Cloisters at Gloucester), an all but nameless architect from London produced the magnificent entrance to the hall at Christ Church; a feat which, but that it is attested by incontrovertible record, no one would ever have credited to so recent a date. The chapels of Wadha'm and Jesus Colleges contain windows (1612 and 1636 respectively) almost as astonishing for their period. Book Flemish and Dutch Artists in Early Modern England

Download or read book Flemish and Dutch Artists in Early Modern England written by MaryBryanH. Curd and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-07-05 with total page 257 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: By examining their production practices in a variety of genres?including manuscript illustration, glass painting and staining, tapestry manufacture, portrait painting, and engraving?this book explores how Netherlandish artists migrating to England in the early modern period overcame difficulties raised by their outsider status. This study examines, for the first time in this context, the challenges of alien status to artistic production and the effectiveness of cooperation as a countermeasure. The author demonstrates that collaboration was chief among the strategies that these foreigners chose to secure a position in London's changing art market. Curd's exploration of these collaborations primarily follows Pierre Bourdieu's model of "establishment and challenger" in which dominance in a field of cultural production depends upon how much cultural, political, and economic capital can be accumulated and the effectiveness of the strategies used to confront competition. The analysis presented here challenges received opinion that a collaborative work is only a joint effort of artists working together on a single monument by demonstrating that the participation of patrons and middlemen can also shape the final appearance of a work of art. Furthermore, this book shows that the strategic use of collaboration served the goal of competition by helping to establish foreign artists in the London art market and suggests that their coping strategies have implications for the study of immigrant behaviors today.

Book Fifty Pictures of Gothic Altars Classic Reprint

Download or read book Fifty Pictures of Gothic Altars Classic Reprint written by Percy Dearmer and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2019-02-05 with total page 210 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Fifty Pictures of Gothic Altars The object of this Collection is to bring together a series of mediaeval altars for the benefit of architects and of others concerned in the arrangement and decoration of churches. T is intended as a supplement to the Alcuin Club Collection I, I which consisted exclusively of pictures of English altars. Here examples from Continental sources have also been used to illustrate the whole subject of the holy table in Western Europe in the Gothic period. Further illustration of the same subject will be provided in course of time from oil paintings, and from the existing remains of mediaeval altars and reredoses. In the present publication (as in Collection I) contemporary pictures have been used. These are chiefly from manuscript sources, but a few early woodcuts have been added for the sake of comparison and as showing the persistence of ancient forms even when they began to be clothed in the detail of the early Renaissance. While some of the pictures here reproduced are among the finest examples of the miniature painting of their time, no attempt has been made to confine this Collection to work of the best execution. Good, bad and indifferent miniatures have been used, so long as they could be said to illustrate the subject. Further, in a book intended to be of some practical use, it has not been thought desirable to begin at too early a date; but rather to keep to the period of. The fuller development of Gothic art, and the time when miniatures had become more realistic than they were in earlier days. A word of warning must here be spoken lest the reader regard these pictures as our sole guide to the arrangement and appearance of mediaeval altars. They are far from this, being merely a help to the interpretation of other evidence, partly documentary, partly that of existing structures and remains. And they cannot be taken by themselves, nor looked at without regard to the artistic conventions of the time, and those peculiarities of miniature painting which themselves require some considerable study.
