Book excerpt: Excerpt from A History of the Siege of Gibraltar, 1779-1783: With a Description and Account of That Garrison From the Earliest Times The following History (as I have presumed to call it) is compiled from Observations daily noted down upon the spot, for my own satisfaction and improve ment, assisted by the information and remarks of several respectable characters, who also were eye witnesses of the transactions therein recorded. Disappointed in my expectations Of seeing this subject; undertaken by an abler pen, nothing less than a conviction that an accurate detail of this extraordinary Siege might be useful, both in a military and historical view, could have induced me, at this late period, to publish. In the prosecution of this design, one principal difficulty has occurred. The work is addressed to two classes of Readers: those whose principal object in the perusal of it was entertainment, I apprehended, might find the relation too minute and circumstantial; and that, from the insertion of many particulars, which those of the Military Profession would greatly blame an author for presuming to curtail or omit. Drinkwater's account of this event," the Siege of Sebastopol" of the last century, at which he was present, supplies abundance of particulars which readers can study with pleasure in the straightforward and simple style of the English officer. This excellent volume, the text-book of the subject, has been supplemented by more than one other. In Captain Sayer's "History," all the important matters relating to the grar.d action have been drawn together with considerable skill and research, which produced much that was unknown to the worthy " Captain of the late 72nd Regiment, or Royal Manchester Volunteers." It is noteworthy that Colonel James--a laborious, but terribly confused and uncritical writer--Captain Drinkwater and Captain Sayer, all held appointments on the Rock (the last as civil magistrate); their opportunities were therefore excellent. In the following abstract we shall chiefly depend upon Drinkwater's work as not only the most complete of contemporary histories, but because his style is simple and clear in a marked degree. This author gives a very good sketch of the fortifications and appearance of the Rock in his time, which, of course, is much more valuable than that of the Spaniard Ayala, although the historical researches and national character of the latter render his production more precious to the student of the history of Gibraltar at large. While the Duke of Marlborough was leading his tr00ps to the Rhine, the Archduke Charles, who had assumed the title of King of Spain, had landed at Lisbon, with the view of taking the command of an army collected on the western frontier of the kingdom to which he laid claim. This army was composed of contingents furnished by England, the Netherlands, and Portugal; but it was prevented from making any progress by the military genius of the Duke of Berwick, natural son of James II., who was at the head of the Spanish forces. At the Opposite ex tremity of the Peninsula, an effort Was made to provoke a rising of the Catalans on behalf of King Charles. For this purpose, a division of five or six thousand men was placed under the command of the Prince of hesse-darmstadt, who embarked at Lisbon in May, in an English fleet of which Sir George Rooke was the admiral. The expedition landed at Barcelona, but found the people indisposed to welcome or support it. It was, therefore, re-embarked and Rooke, sailing down the Mediterranean, passed through the Strait, and effected a junction with the fleet under Sir Cloudesley Shovel. The two admirals were unwilling that so powerful a force Should return to England without accomplishing something; and a council of war was held on the 17th of July, at which several schemes were proposed and discussed - among others, an attack upon Cadiz. This, however, was deemed imprudent with so small a body of troops; and at length it was decided to strike a swift and vigorous blow at Gibraltar. The strength of the fortress was well known; but it was equally well known that the garrison was weak, and that the Spaniards relied too confidently on the assistance supplied by Nature. Gibraltar differs, however, from these sieges, inasmuch as the defence was a successful one, and indeed at no period of the investment was the fortress in any danger of capture save by hunger. At that period England was not, as she afterwards became, invincible by sea; and as we were engaged at the same time in war with France, Spain, Holland, and the United States, it was only occasionally that a fleet could be spared to bring succour and provisions to the beleaguered garrison.
