Book The European integration process from 1945 to the 21st century

Download or read book The European integration process from 1945 to the 21st century written by Nathalie CupCakey and published by GRIN Verlag. This book was released on 2013-04-10 with total page 11 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Essay from the year 2012 in the subject History of Europe - European Postwar Period, grade: 65/100, University of Southampton, language: English, abstract: The Second World War was an utterly brutal episode in the history of Europe which would leave its marks for the next half century that followed. It had altered the ethnic structure of Europe through population movements and mass murder, transforming pre-war Europe into a completely different continent. In 1945 the European countries were weakened and divided by two super-powers, the USA on the Western side, and the USSR in the East. In the following decades Europe will slowly regain confidence: the experienced defeat of war brought many countries to place their hope in a unified Europe in which civil wars like the previous two would become impossible. The wish to pacify the continent gained in strength and this was the backdrop for the idea of forming a European Community. This paper will demonstrate through chronological phases how the integration process of the EU took place, while focusing on the various driving forces/actors that spurred the community's growth, without forgetting to look at the different concerns that darkened the bright horizon of the Union. From 1945 to 1959: Common strife towards pacifism and beginnings of cooperation With the common aim of ending the frequent and bloody wars that have shattered most european countries and which were at its highest during the Second World War (1939-1945), the European Union seemed like a bright and promising project, even if European leaders were facing heavy challenges: since the Yalta summit in 1945, Europe was divided between the United States and the USSR, both retaining control over the Western and the Eastern part of the continent respectively. This brought about several conditions and changes for the European countries: they were bound to be dominated by the US economically as well as militarily, the loss of their status as a 'Great Power' was very painful especially for Britain and France who also gradually lost most of their colonies. In spite of a certain number of draw-backs, the US tutelage also had its good points. In the year 1947 for instance, the Marshall Plan was set up by the US in order to help Europe recover after the war. This strategy was also meant to encourage cooperation between the recipient nation, and that was very important so as to bond the two bitter enemies, France and Germany, and avoid another outbreak of violence in the future (Warleigh, 2004).

Book Empire by Integration

Download or read book Empire by Integration written by Geir Lundestad and published by Oxford University Press, USA. This book was released on 1998 with total page 200 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Empire" by Integration is the first comprehensive survey of the American policy towards European integration from 1945 to the present day. Geir Lundestad argues that, unlike other Great Powers, the United States strongly supported the integration of the most important area under itsinfluence: Western Europe. This integration was, however, to take place within an American-dominated Atlantic framework. In the provocative words of the author this was a policy of "empire" by integration. Professor Lundestad takes a clear, chronological approach to the subject, from the beginnings of European integration after the Second World War, the challenge to American policy on European integration by President Charles de Gaulle, and the modified support for European integration in theNixon-Kissinger years through to the present revived support for European integration under the Clinton administration. "Empire" by Integration provides a succinct, provocative, and highly readable account of this crucial aspect of American-Western European relations. It will be an ideal textbook for use on courses including International Relations, US Modern History, and European Integration.

Book International Cooperation in Cold War Europe

Download or read book International Cooperation in Cold War Europe written by Daniel Stinsky and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2021-04-08 with total page 360 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Formed in 1947, the United Nations Economic Commission for Europe (UNECE) was the first postwar international organization dedicated to economic cooperation in Europe. Linking the universalism of the UN to European regionalism, both Cold War superpowers, the USA and the Soviet Union, were founding members of the UNECE. Building on the League of Nations' difficult heritage, and in an increasingly challenging political environment, the UNECE's mission was to facilitate European cooperation transcending the boundaries set by the Cold War . With a number of competitor organizations set against it, the UNECE managed to carve out a niche for itself, setting norms and standards that still have an impact on the everyday lives of millions in Europe and beyond today. Working against an overwhelming geopolitical trend, UNECE succeeded in bridging the Cold War divide on several occasions, and maintained a broad system of contacts across the Iron Curtain. This book provides a unique study of this important but hitherto under-researched international organization. Incorporating research on the Cold War, the history of internationalism and European integration, Stinsky weaves these different threads of historical enquiry into a single analytical narrative.
