Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from English History in Verse A volume of moderate compass which illustrates from English Poetry many of the principal events of the History of England should be of great service, especially to the young. Herein the student gets the facts which have built up England as it is to-day, dealt with in a picturesque manner. The story of a nation's life as seen by the Poet must always be fascinating, and serve to make the men and actions of the past live again with a reality that prose cannot equally impart. Such inaccuracies as are to be found in some of the poems and ballads given in this volume are more than balanced by the manner in which the writers portray the spirit animating the times with which they are concerned, and the passions which called forth the character and heroism which they vividly describe. I believe that to the young this book will prove attractive that by means of it Teachers will find it a far easier task to awaken an intelligent interest in those wider fields of History upon which this volume makes no attempt to touch. Book A Short History of English Versification

Download or read book A Short History of English Versification written by Max Kaluza and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-03-10 with total page 406 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Short History of English Versification: From the Earliest Times to the Present Day; A Handbook for Teachers and Students English readers will no doubt welcome a translation of the work of a well-known German scholar, in which a strictly scientific account is given of the development of English prosody from the earliest times, and the extent to which it has been influenced by foreign models is shown. Although no attempt has been made at completeness in the section on Modern English prosody, and the author had no wish to enter into competition with Schipper's pioneer work: Englische Metrik as far as Modern English prosody is concerned, yet it is hoped that nothing essential has been omitted. By the side of Schipper's Englische Metrik and Grundriss the book justifies its existence, "since the mass of detail in Schipper is confusing for the beginner, and his presentation of Old and Middle English prosody needs correction in many important points." (Author's preface.) In the section on Modern English prosody the author is chiefly indebted to the works of Schipper, Alden, Johnson, Lewis, Omond and Parsons, which are frequently quoted and referred to (see § 10). Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Elements of English Versification As to concise statements and restricted illustrations, the attempt has been to make these suggestive of what is to be supplied in the way of explanation and amplification. The teacher should thus be led to expound the fuller im port of the principles and conventionalities of the art and to illustrate the more complete range of their application. But for the purpose of elementary instruction - and this is the principal purpose to be served - the book is in tended to be in itself as adequate as possible. All that is set forth in it should be thoroughly learned in connection with introductory courses in literature. Book A System of English Versification

Download or read book A System of English Versification written by Erastus Everett and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-19 with total page 212 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A System of English Versification: Containing Rules for the Structure of the Different Kinds of Verse; Illustrated by Numerous Examples From the Best Poets The following work is intended for the use of students in the advanced classes of high schools and colleges, and is designed as a supplement to a course of Rhetoric and English Literature. Such other persons as are led by their inclinations to spend their leisure hours in the reading of the English poets, or in wooing the Muses, may receive from it valuable assistance. It is thought to supply an important desideratum. It is a matter of surprise to the foreign student, who attempts the study of English poetry and the structure of its verse, to find that we have no work on which he can rely as authority on this subject. In the other modern languages, the most learned philologers have treated of the subject of versification, in all its parts. In English alone, in a language which possesses a body of poetical literature more extensive, as well as more valuable than any other modern language, not excepting the Italian, the student has no rules to guide him, but a few meagre and incorrect outlines appended to elementary text-books. Book English Versification

Download or read book English Versification written by James C. Parsons and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2015-07-19 with total page 182 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from English Versification: For the Use of Students In preparing this book, the author has been guided by the experience of many years in the class-room. No attempt has been made to produce an exhaustive treatise on the fascinat ing subject of prosody. The controversy of scholars as to the degree in which quantity prevails as a basis for English rhythm has been studiously avoided. It seems sufficient to follow the prevalent habit of our best poets, as evidenced in their utterance and their works, of assigning to accent the distinguishing characteristic of English verse. Given this as a basis, it is possible to go on and add all the charms of phonetic richness and depth of which the language is capable. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Book of Cambridge Verse Nevertheless, after all deductions have been made, how much true poetry is yet left! He must be hard to please who cannot find intense enjoyment in the Eclogues of Phineas Fletcher, in Cowley's epitaph on Harvey, in the Miltonic stanzas of Gray's Installation Ode, in a score of other pieces, grave, quaint, or classical in their allusive ness of phrasing. Especially grateful must we be to the number of poets, of exquisite feeling and easy mastery of form, who during the last fifty or sixty years have enriched the language with delicate and elegant verse, from which it has been only too difficult to choose because its quantity is so great and its merit so even. Of this we trust we have given a tolerably adequate selection but it would have been easy to multiply it fourfold. He took feathers in his fingers, and he composed on parchment; And these most true words he set then together, And these three books he condensed into one. Now Layamon prayeth each noble man, 4 For the love of Almighty God and of his gracious heart, 30 Who will read these books and learn these runes, That some true words he will say together For his father's soul, who did beget him, And for his mother's soul, who bore him as man, And for his own soul, that it be the better for them. Book excerpt: Excerpt from English Versification: A Complete Practical Guide to the Whole Subject A perusal of the present analysis will at once show, even to such as are comparatively unacquainted with the orthodox s00pe of English poetics, how much our national literature is likely to have suffered through want of some such induction to metric science as is now at length made attainable. It is hoped that this manual will in no mean degree serve to advance the proper study of the mother-tongue, only now beginning to receive in our schools and colleges some slight share of the consideration most justly its due. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from English History Told by English Poets It is hoped that this volume will find a place as a reading-book in connection with the study of English history. Poets are spirited historians; they enlist imagination and sympathy in the cause of the fading past. They turn the task of memory to pastime. They are not always accurate, but neither are more sedate chroniclers. The dulness of a record was never yet proof of its veracity. The London populace of Elizabethan times learned English history from the stage. The reigns of the Plantagenets, the Wars of the Roses, and the reigns of the Tudors were set forth in a long series of chronicle plays and historical dramas. In these, as in the lyrics and ballads that more commonly express the Stuart reigns, the tendency is to concentrate attention on royal and noble personages rather than on the life of the nation as a whole. Book Forms of English Poetry Classic Reprint

Download or read book Forms of English Poetry Classic Reprint written by Charles F. Johnson and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-06 with total page 374 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Forms of English Poetry This book contains nothing more than every young person should know about the construction of English verse, and its main divisions both by forms and by subject-matter. The historical development of eight of these divisions is sketched and briefly illustrated by examples, but the true character of poetry as an art and a social force has always been in the writer's mind. The study of prosody pure and simple is to most students of an average class wearisome and fruitless, though there are but few who do not become interested in poetry if the technical side is not exclusively regarded by the teacher. Such an interest naturally acquired in youth is of great value. It becomes part of character. Therefore, in this book, only the elements of prosody are given, for it is addressed to young people and to general readers. Still the outline view of several departments that may be obtained from it may serve to render subsequent minute historical study of some one form more fruitful in coordinated ideas and less apt to result in partial conceptions. The writer has reason to think that there is room for a book of this character even in these days of careful specialization. The author's thanks are due to Messrs. Houghton, Mifflin, and Co. for permission to print illustrative extracts from Mr. Lowell's odes, and to Messrs. Charles Scribner's Sons for similar courtesy in the case of passages from Sidney Lanier's Centennial Cantata, and Miss Hapgood's Epic Songs of Russia. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A New Study of English Poetry Evidently Authority, if there be any such power, would need only to speak once and for all but suggestion is a humbler form of persuasion and must be clear and persistent. Unfortunately it is also dangerous to be too clear or too persistent: and I have realised this so strongly that 1 fear to have done my beliefs less than justice. My chief feeling, in parting from the book, is one of anxiety lest I have stated them, vital and moment ous as they seem to me, in too slight a form and little of and illustration.
