Book excerpt: Excerpt from A History of English Prose Rhythm The work which I am now attempting, and which was, in an indirect fashion, promised or aspired to in the History of English Prosody (iii. 20 and elsewhere), may be said to be a carrying out of lines laid down a good deal earlier than those of the History of Prosody itself. It is now some six and thirty years since Lord Morley of Blackburn, then editor of the Fortnightly Review, after most kindly honouring a draft at sight which I had drawn upon him, uninvited and unintroduced, in the shape of a paper on Charles Baudelaire, asked me to write something else on "English Prose Style," a matter on which, though always interested in it from the time when, as a mere boy, I read De Quincey, I had never yet formulated any very precise ideas. About this time, or shortly after, I came into abundant practice as a reviewer, and had to keep the subject before me; while, some years later still, the late Mr. Kegan Paul asked me to deal still more elaborately with it in the Preface to a collection of Extracts. By this time I had systematised my ideas on the subject to some not inconsiderable extent, and the idea of formal scansion of English prose (if I had known of Bishop Hurd's attempts I certainly had forgotten all about them) first regularly suggested itself. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Prose Rhythm in English The suggestions which I venture to put forward in this lecture occurred to me recently while I was reading Saintsbury's History of English Prose Rhythm. I realize that I am guilty of temerity in writing upon a subject which lies outside the range of my usual work, and can only excuse myself by saying that I have studied similar phenomena in ancient and mediaeval prose. Some three years ago I published a paper upon the mediaeval cursus, which contained a brief introduction to the study of numerous prose. Since, however, I cannot hope that more than a few of my listeners may have seen this, I must begin by repeating a few points. For the origin of prose rhythm we must go to Cicero. Nature, he tells us, has placed in the cars a register which tells us if a rhythm is good or bad, just as by the same means we are enabled to distinguish notes in music. Men first observed that particular sounds gave pleasure to the ear, then they repeated them for this end. Thus, practice came first and was succeeded by theory. The rhythm of prose is based on the same principle as that of verse. This in ancient prose was the distribution of long and short syllables; in our own longue it is the arrangement of stressed and unstressed syllables. The difference between the rhythms of prose and verse is said to be one of degree. In verse the metre is constant and unbroken, in prose the measures are loose and irregular. In this respect prose is said to resemble lyric poetry, a very suggestive remark. The theory of ancient writers is, that the whole sentence is pervaded or 'winged' by rhythm, or 'number', but that this number is most noticeable in the cadence, or clausula. The sentence is termed period, and its parts arc called commala and cola. There is a cadence at the end of the colon, and to a less extent at the end of the comma, similar to that at the end of the period. Whenever the speaker paused to draw fresh breath, he punctuated by a numerus, or cadence. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Rhythm in Prose Illustrated: From Authors of the Nineteenth Century It is not easy to give a definition of rhythmic prose, because it is the ear alone which can hear and recognise its music. But it may be distinguished from poetry as a form of composition which is not bound by the limitations of some special metre, but is the harmonious com bination of many. Poetry may be likened to a melody which is distinctly heard, and which obeys certain rules of time and accent. Rhythmic prose can be compared to harmony, where many sounds blend and resolve in ways which the ear does not follow so readily. Book excerpt: Excerpt from English Prose: Its Elements, History, and Usage English prose is the greatest instrument of communication that is now in use among men upon the earth. On this ground alone if on no other it would seem to be worthy of that enquiry which is suggested by the natural curiosity for knowledge. Yet it is a thing to be noted, that whereas our Poetry has called forth a succession of critical literature from the times of Elizabeth until now, no like attention has been paid to English Prose. Book History of Prose Fiction Vol 1 Classic Reprint

Download or read book History of Prose Fiction Vol 1 Classic Reprint written by John Colin Dunlop and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-04 with total page 554 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from History of Prose Fiction, Vol. 1 The value of Dunlop's "History of Fiction," now again, after a long lapse of years, placed within reach of the English reader, needs no demonstration; it is amply attested by the numerous quotations from and references to it in all works, even of the most recent date, upon the history of imaginative literature. The explorations in the field of the genesis and genealogy of fiction have, indeed, recently attained such extensive development that probably no single writer could now be found bold enough to review such a vast domain as forms the scope of Dunlop's undertaking. Writing at a period when comparatively little had been done in the ground he occupied, Dunlop was sensible of the magnitude of his task, and found it expedient to keep it within practicable compass by confining his attention to works in prose - a limitation, however, as need hardly be said, altogether artificial in tracing the evolutions of fictive composition, which passes, according to certain social conditions and by laws which might almost be determined, from verse to prose, and again from the latter to the metrical form. In the domain of letters, as of material industries, increase of labour begets its subdivision and specialization. This book was released on 2018-05-07 with total page 542 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Representative English Prose and Prose Writers The present volume is offered as a contribution to the study of English Prose in its representative Historical Periods, in its representative Literary Forms and in some of its Representative Authors. That portion Of our prose is especially discussed that dates its beginning from the reign of Elizabeth in the writings of Bacon and Hooker and extends to the present decade in the pages Of Carlyle. This is English Prose Proper. As we advance, careful attention will be given to the discussion Of English Prose Style as visibly expressed in a few Of our prominent prose writers. The work will be literary, throughout, in its method, subject matter, and purpose, as distinct from that order of treatment that might be termed technical or speculative. A detailed account Of the life and times of the separateauthors examined will thus be aside from our main design, such allusions being made onlv in so far as they serve to cast light on the particular author's work as an author. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Early English Prose Romances, Vol. 1: With Bibliographical and Historical Introductions The thirty years which have passed since the previous Edition was issued, have wrought a great change in the taste of the literary public. The disappointment I experienced, when on the completion of the third volume, I found I had somewhat misjudged the taste of the reading world has however been mitigated by learning from the Publishers of the present edition, that the work has become so scarce and valuable as to justify its being reprinted. The opinion as to the rarity and intrinsic curiosity of these specimens of our early Popular Literature which I held in 1827 has thus been borne out, which after all is no small satisfaction. At the request of the Publishers I have now revised the Introductions to the several Romances, corrected some errors, and made such additions as recent discoveries in the history of Popular Fiction rendered desirable. This book was released on 2018-01-17 with total page 580 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Short History of Modern English Literature The great pressure upon space has been relieved by dividing the history of English literature into two por tions. If this series continues to receive the support of the public, it is hoped that a volume on the archaic section may bring the story down from the earliest times to Robert of Brunne and Laurence Minot. In my first three chapters I have further lightened my labour by leaving out of consideration what was written in this country in Latin or French, for, although this may be material in dealing with thought in England, it can have but a small connection with the history of expression in the English language. I make no apology for the prominence given throughout to the art of poetry, for it is in verse that style can most definitely and to greatest advantage be studied, especially in a literature like ours, where prose has mainly been written without any other aim than the naive transference of ideas or statement of facts, like the prose of M. Jourdain, while our national poetry, which is one of our main national glories, has been a consecutive chain of consciously elaborated masterpieces.
