Book excerpt: Excerpt from A History of Elizabethan Literature It is an old-fashioned practice, but one which is perhaps none the worse for being old-fashioned, that an author should offer some kind of apology for undertaking a book, especially on a great and important subject. My only excuse for undertaking to write on the greatest period of the greatest literature of the world is that I have been diligently reading the productions, small and great, of this period for some five-and-twenty years with ever-increasing admiration, and that I find the increase of my admiration due in no small degree to the comparison with other periods and other literatures, ancient and modern, which I have been enabled to make in the meantime. As for the particular purposes and methods by which I have been guided in writing this book, they are easily explained. Book excerpt: A History of Elizabethan Literature by George Saintsbury As was explained in the Note to the Preface of the previous editions and impressions of this book, after the first, hardly one of them appeared without careful revision, and the insertion of a more or less considerable number of additions and corrections. I found, indeed, few errors of a kind that need have seemed serious except to Momus or Zoilus. But in the enormous number of statements of fact which literary history of the more exact kind requires, minor blunders, be they more or fewer, are sure to creep in. No writer, again, who endeavours constantly to keep up and extend his knowledge of such a subject as Elizabethan literature, can fail to have something new to say from time to time. And though no one who is competent originally for his task ought to experience any violent changes of view, any one's views may undergo modification. In particular, he may find that readers have misunderstood him, and that alterations of expression are desirable. For all these reasons and others I have not spared trouble in the various revisions referred to; I think the book has been kept by them fairly abreast of its author's knowledge, and I hope it is not too far behind that of others. We are delighted to publish this classic book as part of our extensive Classic Library collection. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Treasury of English Literature: Elizabethan Literature In a short anthology the variety and luxuriance of Elizabeth an minor poetry can only be briefly represented, but amongst all this work that of Michael Drayton, a poet who should be more generally known, is here given a prominent place. Among the prose selections a few have been purposely chosen to give an indication of the literary controversy concerning rhyme in English poetry which was so exciting to the poetical critics of that day. Book The Elizabethan Lyrists and Their Poetry Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Elizabethan Lyrists and Their Poetry Classic Reprint written by Amy Cruse and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2015-07-08 with total page 156 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Elizabethan Lyrists and Their Poetry A Glance through the pages of this little book will suffice to disclose the general plan of the series of which it forms a part. Only a few words of explanation, therefore, will be necessary. The point of departure is the undeniable fact that with the vast majority of young students of literature a living interest in the work of any poet can best be aroused, and an intelligent appreciation of it secured, when it is immediately associated with the character and career of the poet himself. The cases are indeed few and far between in which much fresh light will not be thrown upon a poem by some knowledge of the personality of the writer, while it will often be found that the most direct - perhaps even the only - way to the heart of its meaning lies through a consideration of the circumstances in which it had its birth. The purely aesthetic critic may possibly object that a poem should be regarded simply as a self-contained and detached piece of art, having no personal affiliations or bearings. Of the validity of this as an abstract principle nothing need now be said. The fact remains that, in the earlier stages of study at any rate, poetry is most valued and loved when it is made to seem most human and vital; and the human and vital interest of poetry can be most surely brought home to the reader by the biographical method of interpretation.
