Download or read book A History of Elementary Mathematics written by Florian Cajori and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-01-10 with total page 320 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A History of Elementary Mathematics: With Hints on Methods of Teaching In the preparation of this history, I have made extensive use of the works of Cantor, Hankel, Unger, De Morgan, Pea cock, Gow, Allman, Loria, and of other prominent writers On the history of mathematics. Original sources have been consulted, whenever opportunity has presented itself. It gives me much pleasure to acknowledge the assistance ren dered by the United States Bureau of Education, in. For warding for examination a number of old text-books which otherwise would have been inaccessible to me. It should also be said that a large number of passages in this book are taken, with only slight alteration, from my History of Mathematics, Macmillan co., 1895. Some parts of the present work are, therefore, not independent of the earlier one. It has been my privilege to have my manuscript read by two scholars of well-known ability, - Dr. G. B. Halsted of the University of Texas, and Professor F. H. Loud of Colorado College. Through their suggestions and corrections many infelicities in language and several inaccuracies of statement have disappeared. Valuable assistance in proof-reading has been rendered by Professor Loud, by Mr. P. E. Doudna, formerly Fellow in Mathematics at the University of Wis consin, and by Mr. F. K. Bailey, a student in Colorado College. I extend to them my sincere thanks. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Purchasers can usually download a free scanned copy of the original book (without typos) from the publisher. Not indexed. Not illustrated. 1898 edition. Excerpt: ... MODERN EUROPE. We find it convenient to choose the time of the capture of Constantinople by the Turks as the date at which the Middle Ages ended and Modern Times began. In 1453, the Turks battered the walls of this celebrated metropolis with cannon, and finally captured the city; the Byzantine Empire fell, to rise no more. Calamitous as was this event to the East, it acted favourably upon the progress of learning in the West. A great number of learned Greeks fled into Italy, bringing with them precious manuscripts of Greek literature. This contributed vastly to the reviving of classic learning. Up to this time, Greek masters were known only through the often very corrupt Arabic manuscripts, but now they began to be studied from original sources and in their own language. The first English translation of Euclid was made in 1570 from the Greek by Sir Henry Billingsley, assisted by John Dee.(r) About the middle of the fifteenth century, printing was invented; books became cheap and plentiful; the printing-press transformed Europe into an audience-room. Near the close of the fiftjenth century, America was discovered, and, soon after, the earth was circumnavigated. The pulse and pace of the world began to quicken. Men's minds became less servile; they became clearer and stronger. The indistinctness of thought, which was the characteristic feature of mediaeval learning, began to be remedied chiefly by the steady cultivation of Pure Mathematics and Astronomy. Dogmatism was attacked; there arose a long struggle with the authority of the Church and the established schools of philosophy. The Copernican System was set up in opposition to the time-honoured Ptolemaic System. The long and eager contest between the two culminated in a crisis at the.

Book Second Handbook of Research on Mathematics Teaching and Learning

Download or read book Second Handbook of Research on Mathematics Teaching and Learning written by Frank K. Lester and published by IAP. This book was released on 2007-02-01 with total page 725 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The audience remains much the same as for the 1992 Handbook, namely, mathematics education researchers and other scholars conducting work in mathematics education. This group includes college and university faculty, graduate students, investigators in research and development centers, and staff members at federal, state, and local agencies that conduct and use research within the discipline of mathematics. The intent of the authors of this volume is to provide useful perspectives as well as pertinent information for conducting investigations that are informed by previous work. The Handbook should also be a useful textbook for graduate research seminars. In addition to the audience mentioned above, the present Handbook contains chapters that should be relevant to four other groups: teacher educators, curriculum developers, state and national policy makers, and test developers and others involved with assessment. Taken as a whole, the chapters reflects the mathematics education research community's willingness to accept the challenge of helping the public understand what mathematics education research is all about and what the relevance of their research fi ndings might be for those outside their immediate community.

Book excerpt: The teaching and learning of mathematics has degenerated into the realm of rote memorization, the outcome of which leads to satisfactory formal ability but not real understanding or greater intellectual independence.
