Book excerpt: Excerpt from A History of Durham My objects in writing this little book are to contribute a modicum of help to the movement in favour of vacation schools and school excursions, which has become so marked a feature of recent educational development, and to further the study of local history as part of the school curriculum, so far as the regulations of the Board of Education, at present, admit It is, happily, unnecessary to expatiate upon the benefits, mental and physical, which may be reaped by our children (evidenced by the excellent results already attained) by the judicious use of vacation schools and school journeys and excursions, because the subject has been thoroughly dealt with in vol. xxi of the series of Special Reports on Educational Subjects, issued in 1907 by the Board of Education. With regard to the study of local history, there are, I believe, two methods which, combined, may enable school authorities and teachers to got good results. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Memorials of Old Durham In the past the county has been favoured by a succes sion of historians, who have dealt more or less fully with its parochial history. In the publications of the local archaeological societies, the greater mansions and most of the more interesting churches have been dealt with in detail. Book The Place Names of Durham Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Place Names of Durham Classic Reprint written by Charles E. Jackson and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-21 with total page 234 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Place-Names of Durham The investigation of the place-names of Durham is made greatly more difficult by the fact that there was no Domesday Survey of the county, and therefore that valuable source of the early forms of A.S. names is not available. Further, as the status of the county was a kind of imperium in imperio - there is a document extant wherein the king of the land begs permission of the bishop of the diocese to raise recruits therein! - and one in which documents were not carefully kept, there is not so full a supply of information from this source as is the case in some other counties. I went through one standard work of several hundreds of A. S. charters and found, I think, only one relating to Durham. The place-names of the county are nearly all of native origin. Of some the secret is hidden with the greatest of undesigned diligence, but in most cases they yield what is required when the principles of the development of the dialect are applied. The Psalmist would find no reason to abate his complaint that the people "call the lands after their own names." Book excerpt: Excerpt from Durham Durham, however, has from the earliest times been looked upon as a district apart, not simply as a piece shorn off from a larger division. It has never, that is, been called a sbire as its big neighbour on the south has. The old kingdom of Northumbria, the land north of the Humber, included Durham and Yorkshire as well as Northumberland. But the space between Tyne and Tees was regarded as a close dependency of the Church and its governor was not a king but a bishop. The whole county formed the land of the cathedral on the Wear. It was the patrimony of St Cuthbert, the dominion ruled over by the successors of this great missionary. Not till late in the Middle Ages did men Speak of it as County Durham. In the survey that William the Conqueror ordered to be taken and recorded in Domesday Book it is called Saint Cuthbert's Land. Book History of Durham Connecticut

Download or read book History of Durham Connecticut written by William Chauncey Fowler and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-10-13 with total page 464 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from History of Durham, Connecticut: From the First Grant of Land in 1662 to 1866 On the other hand, Durham, a derivative town, settled more than sixty years, or more than two generations later, in more quiet and less heated times, resembled the secondary formations of Geology, which are composed of the fragmentary contributions from the primary, under the working of gentle forces. In the primary formations of Geology, there is more that is grand, striking, and peculiar, in the scenery. In the secondary formations, there are more of the elements of fertility, and a richer outgrowth of vegetation. In the primitive Towns mentioned, the spirit of dissent was rife, nearly as much so, in some cases, as when the settlers left England. Parties arose, measuring themselves by themselves, and comparing them selves among themselves, requiring legislative interference in order to settle their religious differences. Secessions took place from the Churches and from the Towns, for the purpose of forming other Churches and other Towns, where the favorite opinions and measures of the seceders might prevail. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Contributions to the History of the Durham Dialects: An Orthographical Investigation The present work was begun some ten years ago, and in 1913 a preliminary sketch of the subject was presented as an examination essay. Work on the enlarging and completion of this has been repeatedly interrupted by circumstances beyond my control. The protracted period of preparation and the long interruptions have caused in consistencies both in the general treatment of the material at hand and in various accessories, which latter, I hope, will be deemed to be of minor importance. It gives me great pleasure to express my respectful and sincere thanks to my teacher in English, Professor E. Ekwall, at whose suggestion this piece of research was undertaken and who has kindly encouraged me and given me much valuable advice, especially during the earlier stages of my work. My gratitude is further due to my friend. Dr. E. O. Holmqvist, of Stockholm, for bringing to my knowledge some recent publications bearing on the subject of my researches. I have also to acknowledge my obligation to Mr. F. J. Fielden, M. A., Lektor at the University of Lund, who has revised my manuscript from the point of view of style. Download or read book The Victoria History of the County of Durham Vol 1 Classic Reprint written by William Page and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2016-11-24 with total page 508 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Victoria History of the County of Durham, Vol. 1 The victoria history of the Counties of England is a National Historic Survey which, under the direction of a large staff comprising the foremost students in science, history, and archeology, is designed to record the history of every county of England in detail. This work was, by gracious permission, dedicated to Her late Majesty Queen Victoria, who gave it her own name. It is the endeavour of all who are associated with the undertaking to make it a worthy and permanent monument to her memory. Rich as every county of England is in materials for local history, there has hitherto been no attempt made to bring all these materials together into a coherent form. Although from the seventeenth century down to quite recent times numerous county histories have been issued, they are very unequal in merit; the best of them are very rare and costly most of them are imperfect and many are now out of date. Moreover, they were the work of one or two isolated scholars, who, however scholarly, could not possibly deal adequately with all the varied subjects which go to the making of a county history. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from History of Durham, Maine: With Genealogical Notes Not the least important and interesting feature of this volume IS the portraits and illustrations, which have largely been furnished by the generosity of friends. The endeavor has been to present as good results as the art of the engraver could produce from defective daguerreotypes, tin-types and photographs collected. The credit is due to the Suffolk Engraving Company of Boston. It is believed that the History will be of especial service to Genealogists, since all the births, marriages and deaths found in Durham Town Records down to 1840 are either interwoven with the genealogies or appended at the end of the volume. This may save many a journey to Durham and much labor to the Town Clerk. Special effort has been made to secure accuracy and fulness. In a few cases the Town Records have been corrected by indisputable evidence from private sources. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Raleghana, Vol. 5: The History of Durham House OF the numerous residences occupied by Sir Walter Ralegh during his varied career 1 none was more intimately associated with his life-history than that of Durham House, in the Strand, where, in the days of his splendour, as Gardiner remarks, he spent the happiest years of his active and chequered life. It was one of many large mansions, palaces, or Inns, belonging to noblemen or to ecclesiastical dignitaries (of whom Jesse states that at one period no fewer than nine Bishops occupied them),2 that extended from the Fleet Ditch or River to Westminster. There were a few on the north side of the main street that ran parallel to the river as far as Charing Cross, but the majority formed a line of palaces fronting the Thames, and with their numerous stables, outbuildings, courts, and gardens filled the space between the river-bank and the present line of the Strand, their memories being still retained in the names of the adjacent streets. Durham House was one of the largest and oldest of these mansions, and its historic associations and vicissitudes were perhaps greater than those of any of its neighbours. The ground covered by it measured about 500 feet square; the main building was on the south border, the outbuildings on the north one, there being large courts between them. A garden and orchard existed on the east side. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Durham Township Classic Reprint

Download or read book Durham Township Classic Reprint written by Herbert Charles Bell and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2016-12-21 with total page 30 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Durham Township Five thousand acres of the grant of 1682 were surveyed at some time before the close of that century, and located under the name of Durham, com prising the whole of the township of that name and a considerable area in Northampton county. The seating of a tract of land fifty miles distant from any important settlements when it could have been procured in the vicinity of Philadelphia at equal cost, and possessing the advantages of greater fer tility and accessibility, proves conclusively that the mineral resources of the region were already known. One hundred men were to be sent to Durham; but there is no evidence in regard to the carrying out of this plan. In a metrical composition entitled A Short Description of Pennsylvania, which appeared in 1792, the author, Richard Frame, states that at a certain place about some forty pounds of iron had been made. No particulars as to where, or how, or by whom this was done are given. In the history of New Albion, published in 1648, allusion is made to the existence of lead in the hills some distance above the falls of Delaware. The Indians early learned the nature and value of that metal. It is possible that their information on the subject induced investigation and led to the discovery of iron. And thus in the wealth of the mineral resources of its hills is found the explanation of the comparatively early settlement of Durham. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Durham University: Earlier Foundations and Present Colleges It will, perhaps, be thought by some that the index is encumbered by many needless entries. My own idea of an index is that, if it be worth making at all, it can hardly be too full, and my practice is, if in doubt, to insert an entry. It can do no harm, and the habit of including 'needless' entries often prevents the neglect of many which ought not to be omitted. But the more experience I gain, the more. Thoroughly I am convinced that finality in an index is unattainable. Whatever pains you bestow upon it, you will find, sooner or later.
