Book excerpt: For over a millennium, Durham has occupied a central place in English religious history, with its Norman rebuilding (1093-1133) marking it as an internationally significant masterpiece in the history of architecture. Its setting, perched on a peninsula formed by a bend in the River Wear, adds to the visual drama of the building. This monumental volume offers a comprehensive account, with contributions by a team of 30 experts, on the founding, development, building, and decoration of this magnificent and important edifice. The accessible essays gathered here approach Durham Cathedral from a wide variety of fields and vantage points, including liturgy, music, stained-glass decoration, and book collecting. Lavishly illustrated, the book includes both archival and new photography, and reproductions of representations in all media of the cathedral throughout history. Taken together, this landmark publication is a celebration of Durham Cathedral's enormous historical, spiritual, cultural, and architectural significance. Published for the Paul Mellon Centre for Studies in British Art

Book Sacred Architecture in a Secular Age

Download or read book Sacred Architecture in a Secular Age written by Marie Clausén and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-02-26 with total page 222 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Having won more than one recent poll as Britain’s best-loved building, the appeal of Durham Cathedral appears abiding, which begs the question whether an iconic sacred building can retain meaning and affective pertinence for contemporary, secular visitors. Using the example of Durham Cathedral, this book sets out to explore wherein the appeal of historic churches lies today and considers questions of how and why their preservation into a post-Christian era should be secured. By including feedback from visitors to the cathedral, and the author’s own very personal account of the cathedral in the form of an ekphrasis, this work seeks to privilege an interpretation of architecture that is based on the individual experience rather than on more conventional narratives of architecture history and cultural heritage policy. Recognising the implication of our choice of narrative on the perceived value of historic churches is crucial when deliberating their future role. This book puts forth a compelling case for historical sacred architecture, suggesting that its loss - through imperceptive conservation practices as much as through neglect or demolition - would diminish us all, secularists, atheists and agnostics included.

Book excerpt: The historic City of Durham is now over 1,000 years old. With its magnificent Norman Cathedral and Castle it has become a world famous tourist attraction, the outstanding importance of which was recognised in 1987 when it was designated by UNESCO as a World Heritage site.Martin Dufferveil's book is a celebration of this unique City and of the Country that has grown up around it, from the day in AD 995 when a group of monks carrying the coffin of St Cuthbert settled on what was then known as the 'Dunholm' to the present time. From the original site on the high wooded rock, a settlement began to take shape. It was one which would be swelled by pilgrims and made wealthy by their offerings, and which would eventually become one of the most important sites of religious pilgrimage and military power in England. Many events and people have, throughout the last millennium, lit up the long story of Durham, in both fact and fable. This book recalls some of them. Wars, saints, kings and mythical beasts are all included in this tale of over 1,000 years as are surveyors, locomotive engineers and miners. It is all here from the long sagas of the Wars of the Roses and the English Civil War, to the legendary Lampton Worm; from Canute the Great, Viking Emperor, to murder most foul at Gutty Throat Farm; and from the ravages of William the Conqueror, to the bizarre plan to turn Durham City into a port. Steam locomotives for the Tsar of Russia and Dixieland in the USA both had their origins here in Durham, and both feature in this book.

Book The Story of Durham

Download or read book The Story of Durham written by Douglas Pocock and published by The History Press. This book was released on 2013-07-01 with total page 248 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Story of Durham traces the evolution of a city that medieval writers likened to Jerusalem, which Ruskin termed one of the wonders of the world, and which Pevsner, more modestly, called one of the architectural experiences of Europe. To Bill Bryson, meanwhile, Durham appeared 'a perfect little city' with 'the best cathedral on planet Earth'. The city is a physical manifestation of a significant event in our history: the Romanesque cathedral and castle together constitute this country's monument to the Norman invasion, the last of our country. Beautifully illustrated, this popular history by a leading academic will delight residents and visitors alike.

Book Liturgy and Architecture

Download or read book Liturgy and Architecture written by Allan Doig and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-03-02 with total page 328 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this book Allan Doig explores the interrelationship of liturgy and architecture from the Early Church to the close of the Middle Ages, taking into account social, economic, technical, theological and artistic factors. These are crucial to a proper understanding of ecclesiastical architecture of all periods, and together their study illuminates the study of liturgy. Buildings and their archaeology are standing indices of human activity, and the whole matrix of meaning they present is highly revealing of the larger meaning of ritual performance within, and movement through, their space. The excavation of the mid-third-century church at Dura Europos in the Syrian desert, the grandeur of Constantine's Imperial basilicas, the influence of the great pilgrimage sites, and the marvels of soaring Gothic cathedrals, all come alive in a new way when the space is animated by the liturgy for which they were built. Reviewing the most recent research in the area, and moving the debate forward, this study will be useful to liturgists, clergy, theologians, art and architectural historians, and those interested in the conservation of ecclesiastical structures built for the liturgy.
