Book History of Colorado

Download or read book History of Colorado written by Hubert Howe Bancroft and published by . This book was released on 2008 with total page 354 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Hubert H. Bancroft's History of Colorado (part of Volume XX of Bancroft's History of the Pacific States) is a reprint that makes a very rare and costly research tool available and affordable to all Colorado historians, students, and history-buffs. Written between 1874 and 1890, the massive thirty-nine volume History of the Pacific States has been lauded as the finest history of the West of that time. However, the set was originally boycotted because writers hired by Bancroft to work on the project were never credited for their extensive contributions. Because complete sets are very rare and sell for thousands of dollars, this work has been little read. Bancroft begins his History of Colorado (Volume XX, copyrighted in 1889) with the geology, flora and fauna of Colorado and the history of its earliest recorded inhabitants. He then discusses early explorers, fur traders, and Spanish settlements, before delving into the initial discovery of gold on Clear Creek. Bancroft continues with the settlement of the state, the political organization of Colorado, treaties with the Indians, and details on mining, ranching and farming. Bancroft was involved early-on in the California gold rush, but made his money in printing, newspaper work, stationary, and selling books. He eventually sold his enormous collection of Western History manuscripts, books, and art to the University of California, where it now resides as the nucleus of the Bancroft Library. Because of his early interest in Western History, he personally preserved numerous narratives and artifacts that otherwise would have been lost to time.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from History of Colorado, Vol. 3 of 3: Prepared Under the Supervision of the State Historical and Natural History Society of Colorado With the prospectors seeking gold in our mountains in 1858 and 1859 there was little need for banks. Most of these Argonauts were poor. Their wealth consisted only of their personal belongings, supplies and provisions. They had little money and there was little need for any. The great West was yet to be opened to industry and commerce. In general it was uninhabited, save for wandering tribes of Indians. The scattered traders carried on their business by barter and in the primitive state of development of the western country no banking services were in demand. Book Colorado A History of the Centennial State Fourth Edition

Download or read book Colorado A History of the Centennial State Fourth Edition written by Thomas J. Noel and published by University Press of Colorado. This book was released on 2011-05-18 with total page 625 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since 1976 newcomers and natives alike have learned about the rich history of the magnificent place they call home from Colorado: A History of the Centennial State. In this revised edition, co-authors Carl Abbott, Stephen J. Leonard, and Thomas J. Noel incorporate more than a decade of new events, findings, and insights about Colorado in an accessible volume that general readers and students will enjoy. The fourth edition tells of conflicts, new alliances, and changing ways of life as Hispanic, European, and African American settlers flooded into a region that was already home to Native Americans. Providing balanced coverage of the entire state's history - from Grand Junction to Lamar and from Trinidad to Craig - the authors also reveal how Denver and its surrounding communities developed and gained influence. While continuing to elucidate the significant impact of mining, agriculture, manufacturing, and tourism on Colorado, this edition broadens its coverage. The authors expand their discussion of the twentieth century with several new chapters on the economy, politics, and cultural conflicts of recent years. In addition, they address changes in attitudes toward the natural environment as well as the contributions of women, Hispanics, African Americans, and Asian Americans to the state. Dozens of new illustrations, updated statistics, and an extensive bibliography of the most recent research on Colorado history enhance this edition.
