Book RCN in Retrospect 1910 1968

Download or read book RCN in Retrospect 1910 1968 written by James A. Boutilier and published by UBC Press. This book was released on 2011-11-01 with total page 453 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This tribute to a proud service surveys the history of the Royal Canadian Navy from its inception in 1910 to its demise in 1968. Although established as a declaration of Canada's independence from the imperial fleet, the RCN was the child of the Royal Navy. Its first ships were RN cast-offs, and for the next forty years officers trained in the British fleet -- their 'big ship time.' From these modest beginnings, the book deals with such related issues as the problem of imperial defense, the development of a naval service with a Canadian identity, and the evolution of a Canadian naval engineering capacity.

Book United States Naval Aviation 1910 1918

Download or read book United States Naval Aviation 1910 1918 written by Noel C. Shirley and published by Schiffer Publishing. This book was released on 2000 with total page 336 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: United States Naval Aviation 1910-1918 for the first time provides a comprehensive study of the formation and initial deployment of naval aviation in a world war. The late eminent naval historian R.D. Layman wrote that the subject of naval aviation has, never been adequately explored, had been often underestimated, ignored, or unrealized. The author of this book, based upon over thirty years of research into the subject of World War I aviation, and based upon both primary and secondary reference sources, has compiled into one source a complete history of the early development of naval aviation in the United States. He then discusses the manner and role that the naval aviation service applied to the war effort during 1917-1918. The book covers not only the subject of naval aircraft, but also describes the activities of the Navy in the field of lighter-than-air craft. Specific information is provided on each of the Naval Air Stations constructed and operated, both domestically as well as in Foreign Service during the War. Detailed discussion is also provided regarding the role of Marine Corps aviation during this time period.

Book Canada s Great War 1914 1918

Download or read book Canada s Great War 1914 1918 written by Brian Douglas Tennyson and published by Scarecrow Press. This book was released on 2014-11-25 with total page 261 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Canada’s Great War, 1914-1918: How Canada Helped Save the British Empire and Became a North American Nation describes the major role that Canada played in helping the British Empire win the greatest war in history—and, somewhat surprisingly, resulted in Canada’s closer integration not with the British Empire but with its continental neighbor, the United States. When Britain declared war against Germany and Austria-Hungary in August 1914, Canada was automatically committed as well because of its status as a Dominion in the British Empire. Despite not having a say in the matter, most Canadians enthusiastically embraced the war effort in order to defend the Empire and its values. In Canada’s Great War, 1914-1918, historian Brian Douglas Tennyson argues that Canada’s participation in the war weakened its relationship with Britain by stimulating a greater sense of Canadian identity, while at the same time bringing it much closer to the United States, especially after the latter entered the war. Their wartime cooperation strengthened their relationship, which had been delicate and often strained in the nineteenth century. This was reflected in the greater integration of their economies and the greater acceptance in Canada of American cultural products such as books, magazines, radio broadcasting and movies, and was symbolized by the astonishing American response to the Halifax explosion in December 1917. By the end of the war, Canadians were emerging as a North American people, no longer fearing close ties to the United States, even as they maintained their ties to the British Commonwealth. Canada’s Great War, 1914-1918 will interest not only Canadians unaware of how greatly their nation’s participation in the First World War reshaped its relationship with Britain and the United States, but also Americans unacquainted with the magnitude of Canada’s involvement in the war and how that contribution drew the two nations closer together.

Book Nova Scotia at War 1914 1919

Download or read book Nova Scotia at War 1914 1919 written by Brian Douglas Tennyson and published by Nimbus+ORM. This book was released on 2017-11-21 with total page 347 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An in-depth historical study of Nova Scotia’s role in WWI and its lingering impact on the region, its people, and its economy. Though the First World War ended in 1918, it continued to haunt Canada for generations. In Nova Scotia at War, 1915-1919, historian Brian Douglas Tennyson examines what was, for the people of Canada, an unprecedented period collective military trauma. As Tennyson demonstrates, the war effort didn’t end with the brave soldiers and sailors who went overseas. It also touched the lives of civilians who worked in the fishery, on the farms, and in the forests, coals mines, and steel mills. A specialist in early twentieth-century Canadian political history, Tennyson examines the economic impact of the war with incisive clarity. In an often overlooked cost of the conflict, it shattered Nova Scotia's dream of becoming the Atlantic gateway and the industrial heartland of Canada. This volume includes 30 black and white photos.

Book Tin Pots and Pirate Ships

Download or read book Tin Pots and Pirate Ships written by Michael L. Hadley and published by McGill-Queen's Press - MQUP. This book was released on 1991-01-01 with total page 424 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Michael Hadley and Roger Sarty shed new light on Canadian and German history -- and on Canada's naval defences in particular -- by exploring the naval operations and politics of both nations between 1880 and 1918. Beginning with Canada's feeling of "Splendid Isolation" and Germany's imperial ambitions against North America, the authors' intriguing and graphic account takes us from the early turmoil of federal politics in Canada to the conflict of the Great War and the eventual mothballing of the Canadian fleet. Having conducted an exhaustive study of Canadian, German, American, and British sources -- many of which have not been examined before -- Hadley and Sarty evaluate such major issues as policies and practice; intelligence schemes and spy scares; naval bills and the Dreadnought crisis; U-boats, commercial submarines, undersea cruisers, and surface raiders; and coastal patrols and convoy protection. Many factors that were believed to have been responsible for shaping -- and misshaping -- the Canadian Navy of 1939-45 are shown to have been in play during the First World War. Tin-Pots and Pirate Ships reveals the Canadian tradition of building a fleet only when needed, dismantling it once the conflict is over, and ultimately accepting terms dictated by alliance partners.
