Book Filmed Television Drama 1952 1958

Download or read book Filmed Television Drama 1952 1958 written by William Hawes and published by McFarland. This book was released on 2001-12-26 with total page 308 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This work examines the change from live to filmed television dramas during the period 1952-1958 and the characteristics and programs that are most associated with filmed television drama. Along with many technical changes that had to be made in the industry in order to convert live television to filmed television came an interesting social one. The American society in general was developing a growing interest in the lives of ordinary people, and television moved with them, offering more programs that concentrated on the middle and lower classes. Because of the inherent qualities of filming, television began to feature more documentary-like realism, began to broaden its interpretation of traditional romantic escapism to include more outer space and supernatural science fiction, began to better fulfill materialistic desires through well-designed, enjoyable commercials, and began to offer the best dramas and most popular personalities, often leading viewers to greater self-appreciation and richer lives. This work focuses on the important anthology programs and specials that were on the air from 1952 to 1958 such as Kraft Television Theatre, Philco Television Playhouse, and The Hallmark Hall of Fame, filmed serials like Colgate Theatre, Amos 'n' Andy, and I Love Lucy, and the challenges of converting from live to filmed television drama.

Book Fifties Television

Download or read book Fifties Television written by William Boddy and published by University of Illinois Press. This book was released on 1993 with total page 308 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Just a few years in the mid-1950s separated the "golden age" of television's live anthology drama from Newton Minow's famous "vast wasteland" pronouncement. Fifties Television shows how the significant programming changes of the period cannot be attributed simply to shifting public tastes or the exhaustion of particular program genres, but underscore fundamental changes in the way prime-time entertainment programs were produced, sponsored, and scheduled. These changes helped shape television as we know it today. William Boddy provides a wide-ranging and rigorous analysis of the fledgling American television industry during the period of its greatest economic growth, programming changes, and critical controversy. He carefully traces the development of the medium from the experimental era of the 1920s and 1930s through the regulatory battles of the 1940s and the network programming wars of the 1950s.

Book Why Docudrama

Download or read book Why Docudrama written by Alan Rosenthal and published by SIU Press. This book was released on 1999 with total page 416 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Defining and examining the rationale of docudrama, the nine essayists in the first part discuss the history and development of docudrama on TV and in film; they also consider the place of truth in docudrama, the main critiques of the form, and the audience's susceptibilities and expectations. In investigating the actual filmmaking process, the eight essays in the second part focus on how "docudrama as a 'commodity' is created in the United States and England." Part essay, part case study, and part interview, this section also explores how Hollywood and the commercial networks as well as producers and writers work and think. The final part presents an in-depth critique of a number of controversial docudramas that have helped form and shape public opinion, including Battleship Potemkin, Roots, Reds, JFK, Mississippi Burning, Schindler's List, and In the Name of the Father.

Book Television Opera

Download or read book Television Opera written by Jennifer Barnes and published by Boydell Press. This book was released on 2003 with total page 148 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "This book contrasts the buoyant initial intentions of television's policy makers and creative advisers with the subsequent inability (for various reasons) to deliver as intended. The decline in the relationship between television and its commissioned operas is charted through three case studies: Menotti's Amahl and the Night Visitors (NBC), Britten's Owen Wingrave (BBC), and Gerald Barry's The Triumph of Beauty and Deceit (Channel 4) - the first a live broadcast, the second a video recording, and the third a filmed opera made for television."--Jacket.
