Book A History of Aesthetic Classic Reprint

Download or read book A History of Aesthetic Classic Reprint written by Bernard Bosanquet and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-12 with total page 528 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A History of Aesthetic It would have been foolish, I thought, to omit the more obvious points of the mediaeval development, both in art and in opinion, the mere mention of which might be suggestive to my readers, simply because I had to take them from such writers as Prof. Adamson, Prof. Seth, Prof. Middleton, Mr. Morris and Mr. Pater, and not from original research. Some division of labour must be allowed, though the fact that it has been resorted to should always be made known. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Sense of Beauty: Being the Outlines of AEsthetic Theory This little work contains the chief ideas gathered together for a course of lectures on the theory and history of aesthetics given at Harvard College from 1892 to 1895. The only originality I can claim is that which may result from the attempt to put to gether the scattered commonplaces of criticism into a system, under the inspiration of a naturalistic psychology. I have studied sincerity rather than novelty, and if any subject, as for instance the excellence of tragedy, is presented in a new light, the change consists only in the stricter application to a complex subject of the principles acknowledged to obtain in our simple judgments. My effort throughout has been to recall those fundamental aesthetic feelings the orderly extension of which yields sanity of judgment and distinction of taste. The influences under which the book has been written are rather too general and pervasive to admit of specification; yet the student of philosophy will not fail to perceive how much I owe to writers, both living and dead, to whom no honour could be added by my acknowledgments. I have usually omitted any reference to them in foot-notes or in the text, in order that the air of controversy might be avoided, and the reader might be enabled to compare what is said more directly with the reality of his own experience. Book A Text Book of the History of Painting Classic Reprint

Download or read book A Text Book of the History of Painting Classic Reprint written by John C. Van Dyke and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-03-15 with total page 384 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Text-Book of the History of Painting HE Object of this series of text-books is to provide concise teachable histories of art for class-room use in schools and colleges. The limited time given to the study of art in the average educational institution has not only dictated the condensed style of the volumes, but has limited their scope of matter to the general features of art history. Archaeological discussions on special subjects and aesthetic theories have been avoided. The main facts of history as settled by the best authorities are given. If the reader choose to enter into particulars the bibliography cited at the head of each chapter will be found helpful. Illustrations have been introduced as sight-help to the text, and, to avoid repetition, abbreviations have been used wherever practicable. The enumeration of the principal works of a school, or period, and where they may be found, which follows each chapter, may be serviceable to trav elling students in Europe. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The History of Ancient Art: Among the Greeks Cline and fall - and also the causes to which may reasonably be attributed the points of resemblance and difference observable in the arts of different na tions. The soundness of his judgment, the acuteness and originality of his observations, and the copious ness of his illustrations, drawn from an intimate familiarity with every extant monument of ancient art, and with everything in ancient classic literature which could elucidate the subject to which he had devoted his life, render him the most trustworthy, instructive, and delightful of the writers on art. I cannot but think that a careful study of Winckel mann's History of Ancient Art, and a thoughtful consideration of the great principles embodied in it, must necessarily tend to form a pure, correct, and elevated taste. Book A History of Six Ideas

Download or read book A History of Six Ideas written by W. Tatarkiewicz and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 396 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The history of aesthetics, like the histories of other sciences, may be treated in a two-fold manner: as the history of the men who created the field of study, or as the history of the questions that have been raised and resolved in the course of its pursuit. The earlier History of Aesthetics (3 volumes, 1960-68, English-language edition 1970-74) by the author of the present book was a history of men, of writers and artists who in centuries past have spoken up concerning beauty and art, form and crea tivity. The present book returns to the same subject, but treats it in a different way: as the history of aesthetic questions, concepts, theories. The matter of the two books, the previous and the present, is in part the same; but only in part: for the earlier book ended with the 17th century, while the present one brings the subject up to our own times. And from the 18th century to the 20th much happened in aesthetics; it was only in that period that aesthetics achieved recognition as a separate science, received a name of its own, and produced theories that early scholars and artists had never dreamed of.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Croce's Aesthetic This is the meaning of Croce's doctrine that beauty is expression. And that doctrine is sound. It does justice to the essential qualities of the beautiful; to its spirituality and its simplicity. Wherever, it says, you find vision and utterance, there you have art and beauty. They may be on a great scale or a small, but they have one quality throughout. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book The Creation of Aesthetic Plastic Surgery

Download or read book The Creation of Aesthetic Plastic Surgery written by M. Gonzales-Ulloa and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-11-11 with total page 162 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the turmoil of everyday activity, when few surgeons have time or energy for bibliographic research, the wonderful history of human endeavor runs the risk of remaining buried in libraries. Several years ago, a small group of enthusiasts was gathered together by Mario Gonzalez-Ulloa to write the history of Aesthetic Plastic Surgery. There was the feeling among them that experience and knowledge should be shared by all those who practice this art and this science, and that its creation and progress would be alive and present with a chronicle of this surgical specialty. Their chapters have been written. These chapters have appeared in Aes thetic Plastic Surgery, but they are now collected in book form, and the individual style of each author has been preserved. It is a thrilling story. It is a compact information. Let it be our stepping-stone project in which past, present, and future are fused into one.

Book The Aesthetic Experience Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Aesthetic Experience Classic Reprint written by Laurence Buermeyer and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-11-07 with total page 186 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Aesthetic Experience The enjoyment Of art is ordinarily looked upon as some thing detached from the serious business of life, as an episode in an existence otherwise fundamentally non-aesthetic. Art is conceived as shut up in books, concert-halls, and museums; as, perhaps, a legitimate preoccupation on a trip to Europe; but under ordinary circumstances a relaxation, and if more than that, a distraction or even a dissipation. For a few individuals, writers, musicians, or painters, it is more than a by-play or avocation; but for the mass Of men concern with it is an interlude, and its production is of course out of the question. In this it resembles religion. TO go to a museum and to go to church alike involve a break with our usual habits. Both are expeditions into worlds other than that in, which our every-day Occupations go on. And both worlds are suspect from the point of view of the habitual dweller in the real world. The man who attempts to treat the pre cepts Of religion as applicable to his business or personal relations is as little to be considered fully sane as the man whose life centres about art: both are at least likely to be queer. A book which is thought Of as a work Of art is presumably to be read from a sense of duty, and in a frame of mind both self-conscious and self-congratulatory - a frame Of mind, at any rate, quite different from that of Simple straightforwardness with which we approach the merely enjoyable. Book A History of English Literature Classic Reprint

Download or read book A History of English Literature Classic Reprint written by Walter Swain Hinchman and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-10-18 with total page 474 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A History of English Literature In writing this book the author has sought to lay stress on the facts of the history of English literature, rather than on the interpretation of it. The need of the high school pupil would seem to be, first of all, the chief facts, given in a continuous lrnportant movements, so far as is possible, told in terms ot/'n'ien rather than of ideas. Though A certain amount 'of aesthetic comment, implied if not is'tated, is inevitable in any survey of literature which is more than a dictionary of names, the intention of the present writer has been to place the emphasis on men, on what they did, and on how they came to do it - not on what the world thinks of their performance. By such a method the space gained is considerable; there are important facts which cannot be included in a small volume if it is half-full of interpretation. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The AEsthetic Movement in England Now up to a certain point, the theory that beauty is apparent only to some, is perfectly sound, for most persons will agree with Kant, that there can be no strict mathematical definition, or science of beauty in nature, art, poetry or music, inasmuch as beauty is not altogether a property of objects or sounds, but is relative to the hates and faculties brought to bear upon them. Illustrations of the truth of this axiom will occur to every one it is founded upon the old old truism, tastes dryer. The {esthetes recognise this truth to the fullest extent, but having first laid down certain general principles, they have endeavoured to elevate taste into a scientific system, the correlation of the arts being a main feature of the scheme they even go so far as to decide what shall be considered beautiful, and those who do not accept their ruling are termed Philistines, and there is no hepe for them. Book The Aesthetic Experience

Download or read book The Aesthetic Experience written by William Davis Furry and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-01 with total page 176 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Aesthetic Experience: Its Nature, and Function in Epistemology That the epistemological problem is the most urgent in current philosophical discussion is to be inferred from the introduction into the more complete works of Logic and Metaphysics of topics that directly pertain to neither. The preliminary discussions found in such works as Bradley's, Bosanquet's, and Sigwart's Logic are not however psychological precisely, neither are they to be regarded as an indication that Psychology is becoming sufficiently ample in its programme to include what previously was regarded as subject-matter of more or less independent philosophical disciplines. The introductory chapters in the works thus named are rather epistemological than psychological. Paulsen is historically justified in holding that Epistemology arises always as a critical reflection on Metaphysics with which it is, at the first, identified. From Kant and Locke until now the conviction has been growing that knowing precedes being, so that the priority which Metaphysics so long held should be given to Epistemology. The limitations as well as the possibilities of human knowledge are to be sought within the knowing process rather than in some already determined objective existence. Since the time of Locke and Kant, epistemological inquiry has been increasingly to the fore. There was 'constant whetting of the knife' until the time of Lotze, who felt that the whetting process should end and an actual theory of the object of knowledge established. But despite the constant whetting of the knife the conviction will not down that the whetting has not yet been sufficiently done.
