This book was released on 2018-09-24 with total page 460 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A History and Description of English Porcelain For many years there has been real need of a work on English Porcelain which should occupy the gap between the elaborate monographs of single factories by Binns, Haslem, and Owen, and the admirable but brief general sketch by Professor A. H. Church. The present volume is an attempt to remove this deficiency by giving, on a sufficiently extended scale and with adequate illustration, a connected and comprehensive account of the origin and progress of porcelain making in England. Though the mere fact that the author is a practical potter cannot in itself prove sufficient qualification for such a task, the experience necessarily gained in the daily routine of a factory must be of value in attempting to appraise the work of the potters of past generations. For the first time, at all events, the historical and artistic development of English. Porcelain is interpreted by the light of technical and scientific knowledge gained in the industry itself; the fruits of years of study of museum collections and documentary and traditional information ripened by still more years of experience in actual manufacture. Having no prejudices in favour of any particular individual or factory it is only natural that my views should not always coincide with those of writers whose work has been conceived in a vein of personal eulogy, which puts impartial criticism out of the question. Excerpt: ...manufacture of the most sumptuous "garnitures " for the palace of Louveciennes, and on the production in "biscuit" of the famous bust of Madame Dubarry, modelled by Pajou. Although Marie-Antoinette was immediately interested in the productions of the factor', she had no direct influence upon it until after her coronation in 1774. Yet she soon became a patroness of Sevres for, from 1771 to 1774, part of the personnel was employed in making, for her, furniture and garnitures of all kinds analogous to, or identical with, those which had been made for the Dubarry. The director of the works, who was a good courtier, had already produced in 1772 a "biscuit" group, modelled by Pajou, and called " The Marriage of Louis XVI." In this group the Dauphin is on the left, the Dauphiness on the right, clasping their hands on a kind of altar surmounted by a globe ornamented with "fleurs-de-lys." The front of the altar had the inscription "Au bonheur public" while the pedestal bore, in low relief, garlands of flowers, and a royal monogram composed of the initials "L." and "A." intertwined. About 1773, the sculptor Pajou made a bust of MarieAntoinette in which, while we cannot but admire the regal attitude of the daughter of an empress and the wife of a mighty prince, we are still more charmed by the juvenile freshness and grace of the woman, the beauty of her features, and the arrangement of her hair. In this model Pajou certainly produced one of the finest works of the eighteenth century, and it seems like the irony of fate that it can only be compared with the busts of the Dubarry produced by the same sculptor. In the Petit Trianon an example of this bust, doubtless made at...

Book Porcelain Its Nature Art and Manufacture Classic Reprint

Download or read book Porcelain Its Nature Art and Manufacture Classic Reprint written by William Burton and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2015-07-05 with total page 362 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Porcelain Its Nature Art and Manufacture The interest of Porcelain is perennial, and though book succeeds book, the subject remains unexhausted. The aim of this little book is to supply the collector and student of porcelain, as well as the general reader, with a clear and connected account of the various kinds of porcelain made in Asia and Europe. It has taken me more years than I like to count to arrive at the ideas set down in the following pages, and I hope that, as a result of my labours in sifting, weighing, selecting, and arranging, the knowledge gained from so many diverse sources, others may be saved a great deal of unnecessary trouble. This is in no sense a technical treatise, yet it is based on a practical experience in many branches of the Potter's Art, which has, I trust, enabled me to exhibit certain aspects of the subject in a way that will be new to the bulk of my readers. Throughout the work I have been careful to explain how the artistic qualities of the various porcelains have been influenced by the nature of the materials and processes used in different countries; the information being of such a character as will enable a collector to find the scientific explanation of the differences which an artist feels. Many difficulties have to be faced in a work necessarily so compressed as this. In the first place, it is impossible to keep the treatment accurately in scale. Naturally, perhaps, in an English book the records of the English factories occupy more space than the artistic merit of their productions would warrant; while German porcelain makes so little appeal to our English tastes, that a German might, not unreasonably, complain that the factories of his country had received less attention than they deserve. Others may think that Japanese porcelain has been somewhat slighted, but I have honestly tried to give a picture that should represent as truly as possible, within the prescribed limits, the development of every important kind of porcelain known. It is, perhaps, necessary to say a word in explanation of the attention given to the Letters of Pere d'Entrecolles. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Grand Feu Ceramics: A Practical Treatise on the Making of Fine Porcelain and Gres There has been in late years a remarkable artistic revival in pottery as in other crafts. This movement, which originated in France, has spread to the United States and is rapidly growing. The making of artistic porcelain, however, has been but slightly attempted in this country. It is probably because of the difficulty of the task that American artist potters, under the leadership of Rookwood and Gruchy, have hitherto almost exclusively applied their skill to the producing of pottery fired at comparatively low temperatures, not realizing perhaps the intimate connection which exists between the quality of the body and the quality of the glaze and colors.
