Book A Survey of Christian Hymnody

Download or read book A Survey of Christian Hymnody written by William Jensen Reynolds and published by . This book was released on 1963 with total page 354 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Written to fill the need for a truly comprehensive text on hymnody, the Dr. Reynolds' book offers a complete course in the subject. Unlike other textbooks on hymnody, all of which confine themselves to a treatment of tunes or texts, this provides a well-balanced treatment of both. It also provides a concise but complete history of hymnody, tracing and evaluating it from earliest beginnings to present-day usage. A unique section contains 160 hymns and tunes compiled from the hymnals of seven major Protestant denominations. Ordinarily, classroom study of so large and diverse a collection would involve the use of at least a dozen hymnals. Designed specifically as a basic text in hymnody courses offered by seminaries and colleges, this versatile book eliminates the need for innumerable supplementary texts."--Dust jacket.

Book Christian Hymnody in Twentieth Century Britain and America

Download or read book Christian Hymnody in Twentieth Century Britain and America written by David Music and published by Bloomsbury Publishing USA. This book was released on 2001-07-30 with total page 222 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The 20th century, especially the latter decades, was a time of explosive growth and importance in hymnody, and yet published material about the hymnody of this period has been scattered and difficult to come by. The present volume catalogues and categorizes the available writings to guide students and scholars in their research. Furthermore, this reference does not depend primarily on the view of the author/compiler, but guides users toward a broad spectrum of viewpoints about 20th-century hymnody. Listing the principal writings on the repertory, language, practice, and people of hymnody during the last century, this annotated bibliography offers students and researchers alike a handy reference for a vast and varied field. Beginning with a unique introduction to and summary of hymnody in the 20th century, Music arranges the entries by topic, dividing each chapter by helpful subject headings. The repertory of the twentieth century, and language issues are discussed. Practical elements of hymnody are covered, while the final chapter lists writings about individual hymn writers and other influential persons in the field. Music provides a brief annotation for each entry and uses numerous cross-references, guiding the reader to relevant material in other sections of the book. A comprehensive index concludes this essential reference.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Sing to the Lord is a chronological survey of Christian hymnody from its origin in biblical times to the present -- a story rich in faith, emotion, and drama. Stephen W. Nance here combines chronological history with discussions of the major figures in the history of hymnody: Ambrose of Milan, Martin Luther, John Calvin, Isaac Watts Charles Wesley, and others. He gives special attention to the Reformation, English hymnody of the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries, hymnody in colonial America, the development of American folk hymnody from both the African-American and white rural traditions, the growth of the nineteenth-century gospel hymn from its roots in frontier revivalism, and twentieth-century byronic trends in great Britain and the United States. A final chapter exemplifies the impact one state can have on national trends using Pennsylvania as a case study.

Book Hymns and Hymnody Historical and Theological Introductions Volume 1

Download or read book Hymns and Hymnody Historical and Theological Introductions Volume 1 written by Mark A. Lamport and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2019-02-21 with total page 366 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Hymns and the music the church sings are tangible means of expressing worship. And while worship is one of, if not the, central functions of the church along with mission, service, education, justice, and compassion, and occupies a prime focus of our churches, a renewed sense of awareness to our theological presuppositions and cultural cues must be maintained to ensure a proper focus in worship. Hymns and Hymnody: Historical and Theological Introductions is a 60-chapter, three-volume introductory textbook describing the most influential hymnists, liturgists, and musical movements of the church. This academically grounded resource evaluates both the historical and theological perspectives of the major hymnists and composers that have impacted the church over the course of twenty centuries. Volume 1 explores the early church and concludes with the Renaissance era hymnists. Volume 2 begins with the Reformation and extends to the eighteenth-century hymnists and liturgists. Volume 3 engages nineteenth century hymnists to the contemporary movements of the twenty-first century. Each chapter contains these five elements: historical background, theological perspectives communicated in their hymns/compositions, contribution to liturgy and worship, notable hymns, and bibliography. The mission of Hymns and Hymnody is (1) to provide biographical data on influential hymn writers for students and interested laypeople, and (2) to provide a theological analysis of what these composers have communicated in the theology of their hymns. We believe it is vital for those involved in leading the worship of the church to recognize that what they communicate is in fact theology. This latter aspect, we contend, is missing--yet important--in accessible formats for the current literature.
