Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Historical Sketch of the Society of Friends in Scorn Called Quakers in Newcastle Though designed only for a local audience, it was evident to those who heard it that its preparation had involved considerable research, and that many facts had been collected which were worth preservation. It was therefore suggested that the history thus commenced should be brought down to a later date and printed. In furtherance of this desire John William Steel invited the assistance of other Friends whose longer residence in Newcastle would enable them to furnish material not at his command. The following pages are now presented to the reader in the hope that the sketch thus complied may not only possess some value as a local history, but may have an interest beyond the limits of Newcastle Friends. It was thought that by inviting contributions from those best able to speak from personal knowledge of the subjects treated, the variety of style would add to the popularity of the book. It will be seen that some of theseare of a Sketchy rather than of a literary character: they are purposely given in this form in preference to attempting a more studied composition. Voluminous manuscripts have been handed down from the correspondence and memoranda of George Richardson, which have furnished material to the Editors, who would gladly have availed themselves of similar collections representing other families. Had such been at their command. The Portraits and Silhouettes, so kindly contributed by relatives of the deceased will recall some familiar faces, and will present others to many who have known them only by tradition.
