Book The Evolution of an Empire

Download or read book The Evolution of an Empire written by Mary Platt Parmele and published by Cosimo, Inc.. This book was released on 2006-05-01 with total page 333 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: [I]f New England and Pennsylvania and Ohio had been favorable to the growth of cotton and rice and tobacco, if the northern States had gradually become enmeshed and entangled in slavery, familiarized with its cruelties, and in love with its kindly features, if their fortunes, and the future of their children had depended upon its continuance, they too might have fought for its preservation. -from Chapter XXV American writer MARY PLATT PARMELE (1843-1911) believed that in the typically dry presentation of her day, the reading of history was a "dreary task," and so she set out to remedy that with a series of sprightly chronicles of the past and accounts of the present that encompassed the essential facts necessary for appreciating the state of the world as she saw it. With this 1896 book, she explained "the grand simple lines" of the story of the United States so that it would serve as an inspiration to readers young and old alike. From Christopher Columbus to the fate of the "New West" at the dawning of the 1900s, this is a chipper trip through the American centuries that condenses the story of a nation while never corrupting it. As Parmele herself said, "A little, thoroughly comprehended, is better than much imperfectly remembered and understood." OF INTEREST TO: readers of American history Parmele's books available from Cosimo Classics: * The Evolution of an Empire: A Brief Historical Sketch of France * A Short History of France * A Short History of Germany * A Short History of Spain * A Short History of Rome and Italy * A Short History of England, Ireland and Scotland

Book excerpt: William C. Davis, one of America's best Civil War historians, here offers a definitive portrait of the Confederacy unlike any that has come before. Drawing on decades of writing and research among an unprecedented number of archives, Look Away! tells the story of the Confederate States of America not simply as a military saga (although it is that), but rather as a full portrait of a society and incipient nation. The first history of the Confederacy in decades, the culmination of a great scholar's career, Look Away! combines politics, economics, and social history to set a new standard for its subject. Previous histories have focused on familiar commanders such as Robert E. Lee and Stonewall Jackson, but Davis's canvas is much broader. From firebrand politicians like Robert Barnwell Rhett and William L. Yancey, who pushed for secession long before the public supported it; to Dr. Samuel Cartwright, who persuaded many Southerners of the natural inferiority of their slaves; to the women of Richmond, who rioted over bread shortages in 1863, Davis presents a rich new face of the Confederate nation. He recounts familiar stories of battles won and lost, but also little-known economic stories of a desperate government that socialized the salt industry, home-front stories of the rangers and marauders who preyed on their fellow Confederates, and an account of the steady breakdown of law, culminating in near anarchy in some states. Never has the Confederacy been so vividly brought to life as a full society, riven with political and economic conflicts beneath its more loudly publicized military battles. Davis's astonishingly thorough primary research has ranged across the 800-odd newspapers that were in operation during the war, but also across the personal papers of over a hundred Southern leaders and ordinary citizens. He quotes from letters and diaries throughout the narrative, revealing the Confederacy through the words of the Confederates themselves. Like any society, especially in the early stages of nation-building and the devastating stages of warfare, the Confederacy was not one thing but many things to many people. One thing, however, was shared by all: the belief that the South offered a necessary evolution of American democracy. Look Away! offers a dramatic and definitive account of one of America's most searing episodes.

Book The Cradle of the Confederacy

Download or read book The Cradle of the Confederacy written by Joseph Hodgson and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-09 with total page 550 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Cradle of the Confederacy: Or, the Times of Troup, Quitman and Yancey; A Sketch of Southwestern Political History From the Formation of the Federal Government to A. D. 1861 Time has borne us so far from the men and events of the period which ushered in the fratricidal war of 1861-'5 that it is well for a new generation to be taught the truth of Southern History. It is not amiss to review the causes which produced the late war, and by examining the more humble and minute incidents of local discussion and action, to arrive at a correct conclusion as to the motives of those who engaged in the formation of the Southern Confederacy. It will be seen from the following imperfect sketch that a majority of the people of the South were opposed to secession in 1850, and even in 1860; that the Unionists of the South were driven from their position after a protracted struggle, not so much by the advocates of disunion at the South as by the advocates of disunion at the North; and that the great mass of Southern people were led into acceptance of the Ordinance of Secession under the belief that the remedy they thus sought against grievances, would be acquiesced in by the people of the Northern States and by the Federal Government. The author will not have had his labor in vain, if he succeeds in saving from the wreck of time, and in preserving in the more durable form of a book, many facts which throw light upon our local history, and which, after a few years, might otherwise be lost to memory. And if the facts here presented should aid in convincing the people of this Republic that the South-Western State were driven by Northern enemies, rather than by Southern leaders, into the act of secession the author will rest satisfied that he has contributed one important aid towards an obliteration of sectional misunderstanding, and towards a return of that fraternal feeling which should exist between peoples bound together by common language, laws, kindred, and commerce. Book A Short History of the Confederate States of America

Download or read book A Short History of the Confederate States of America written by Jefferson Davis and published by . This book was released on 2023-05-23 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: One of the most interesting and historical documents to emerge from the American Civil War, this account of that mighty and historical conflict was penned by none other than the leader of the Confederate States of America. Written in the first person, this work tells not only of the major events of the war-as experienced by the president of one of the warring sides-but also spells out the background, as seen by the South, of the origins of the conflict. Along the way it addresses the constitutional issues which lay at the heart of the war: slavery, states' rights, and the usurpation of the U.S. Constitution. Jefferson proves beyond question that the Confederacy was in fact adhering to the letter of the law of the U.S. Constitution. Most of the book however concentrates on the events which raged from 1861 to 1865, and the desperate attempts by the South to prepare for war against a far superior North. This new edition has been completely reset and contains hundreds of new footnotes to explain events, personalities, and issues, to the present-day reader. Illustrated.

Book The Rise and Fall of the Confederate Government Complete

Download or read book The Rise and Fall of the Confederate Government Complete written by Jefferson Davis and published by Library of Alexandria. This book was released on 1881-01-01 with total page 2296 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A duty to my countrymen; to the memory of those who died in defense of a cause consecrated by inheritance, as well as sustained by conviction; and to those who, perhaps less fortunate, staked all, and lost all, save life and honor, in its behalf, has impelled me to attempt the vindication of their cause and conduct. For this purpose I have decided to present an historical sketch of the events which preceded and attended the struggle of the Southern States to maintain their existence and their rights as sovereign communities--the creators, not the creatures, of the General Government. The social problem of maintaining the just relation between constitution, government, and people, has been found so difficult, that human history is a record of unsuccessful efforts to establish it. A government, to afford the needful protection and exercise proper care for the welfare of a people, must have homogeneity in its constituents. It is this necessity which has divided the human race into separate nations, and finally has defeated the grandest efforts which conquerors have made to give unlimited extent to their domain. When our fathers dissolved their connection with Great Britain, by declaring themselves free and independent States, they constituted thirteen separate communities, and were careful to assert and preserve, each for itself, its sovereignty and jurisdiction. At a time when the minds of men are straying far from the lessons our fathers taught, it seems proper and well to recur to the original principles on which the system of government they devised was founded. The eternal truths which they announced, the rights which they declared "unalienable," are the foundation-stones on which rests the vindication of the Confederate cause. He must have been a careless reader of our political history who has not observed that, whether under the style of "United Colonies" or "United States," which was adopted after the Declaration of Independence, whether under the articles of Confederation or the compact of Union, there everywhere appears the distinct assertion of State sovereignty, and nowhere the slightest suggestion of any purpose on the part of the States to consolidate themselves into one body. Will any candid, well-informed man assert that, at any time between 1776 and 1790, a proposition to surrender the sovereignty of the States and merge them in a central government would have had the least possible chance of adoption? Can any historical fact be more demonstrable than that the States did, both in the Confederation and in the Union, retain their sovereignty and independence as distinct communities, voluntarily consenting to federation, but never becoming the fractional parts of a nation? That such opinions should find adherents in our day, may be attributable to the natural law of aggregation; surely not to a conscientious regard for the terms of the compact for union by the States.

Book The Rise and Fall of the Confederate Government Volume 1

Download or read book The Rise and Fall of the Confederate Government Volume 1 written by Jefferson Davis and published by Createspace Independent Publishing Platform. This book was released on 2018-02-24 with total page 630 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A decade after his release from federal prison, the 67-year-old Jefferson Davis-ex-president of the Confederacy, the "Southern Lincoln," popularly regarded as a martyr to the Confederate cause-began work on his monumental Rise and Fall of the Confederate Government. Motivated partially by his deep-rooted antagonism toward his enemies (both the Northern victors and his Southern detractors), partially by his continuing obsession with the "cause," and partially by his desperate pecuniary and physical condition, Davis devoted three years and extensive research to the writing of what he termed "an historical sketch of the events which preceded and attended the struggle of the Southern states to maintain their existence and their rights as sovereign communities." The result was a perceptive two-volume chronicle, covering the birth, life, and death of the Confederacy, from the Missouri Compromise in 1820, through the tumultuous events of the Civil War, to the readmission of the Southern states to the U.S. Congress in the late 1860s. Supplemented with a new historical foreword by the Pulitzer Prize-winning James M. McPherson, The Rise and Fall of the Confederate Government, Volume I belongs in the library of anyone interested in the root causes, the personalities, and the events of America's greatest war. Download or read book A Short History of the Confederate States of America written by Jefferson Davis and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2015-06-16 with total page 541 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Short History of the Confederate States of America The vindication of the Southern States for their Ordinances of Secession in 1861 involves two considerations, namely: their rightful power to withdraw from the Union into which they had entered by voluntary compact; and the causes that justified the exercise of that power. In treating this question in its twofold aspect, the legal and the moral, it is not intended to vex the weary ear by adducing time-worn arguments; but, believing the case to be one which must be adjusted finally by historical facts, the candid reader is asked, without favor or prejudice, to make a decision on the unquestionable record. The British Colonies of North America - subsequently the United States - had a common allegiance to the British Crown. Otherwise they were as distinct from one another as they were from Canada, Nova Scotia, and the American islands owned by Great Britain.
