Short as is this sketch, it has not been hastily written. More than three years have been employed during the intervals of professional occupation in collecting and digesting materials, in verifying facts and dates, and in communicating with persons who could speak upon the subject, either from personal or hereditary knowledge. It has been my constant endeavour to give correct information, and to this end I have sacrificed almost everything. The task has been rendered somewhat difficult from the fact that there exists very little information respecting the early Church in New Brunswick. Had this work been undertaken some years ago many interesting and valuable facts now lost would have been secured. Book excerpt: This study is an investigation of the arrival, planting, and expansion of the Church of England in Loyalist New Brunswick. The obstacles encountered in setting up missions in the frontier both before and after the arrival of Bishop Charles Inglis are documented. It is revealed that the origins, qualifications, zeal, and adaptability of the colony's missionaries were key factors in the Church's foundation and success. Legislated establishment, although British policy, proved half-hearted and of little benefit in colonial New Brunswick. While imperial attention to colonial religious policy was short-lived, the continued interest and aid of the Society for the Propagation of the Gospel (SPG) was crucial. inability to fully understand and appreciate the New Brunswick reality, the SPG remained the only secure source of clerical income. Given the frontier economy, SPG funds were critical to the Church, but it was in the end the exertions of Bishop Inglis and his small band of former New England missionaries who effected, the establishment and long-term viability of the Church of England in Loyalist New Brunswick.

Gladstone, future Prime Minister of England and keen churchman, arranged in 1844 to have a member of this controversial group appointed to the Episcopal bench. Because those associated with this movement were suspected of Roman Catholic theological leanings and perhaps even disloyalty to the English Establishment, such a move was politically and ecclesiastically dangerous in England. So Medley was sent to the colonies. Intended to establish High Churchmanship and the British Empire in the soil of the new world, Medley became convinced, over this forty-seven-year episcopate, that the American model of the church was more practical than the British. He eventually forged an identity for his diocese that was, in many ways, to be the pattern for the modern worldwide Anglican Church.
