Download or read book A Historical Commentary on Suetonius Divus Titus written by Janet E. Moodie and published by . This book was released on 1977 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this thesis, I have provided a historical commentary on the life of the deified Titus, as recounted by Gaius Suetonius Tranquillus in the second century A.D.. Ancient sources - literary, epigraphical, and numismatic - have been consulted in order to evaluate the historical material of Suetonius. Extensive use has also been made of modern critical works relevant to the author's treatment of the second Flavian emperor. In the commentary, each chapter section has been prefaced by a summary, followed by a discussion of individual points in the text. In addition, the pecularities of Suetonius' biographical style have been examined to determine how they affect the author's presentation of historical data. The value of the work as an historical source has also been studied and possible sources for the vita of Titus have been explored.

This book was released on 2017-09-17 with total page 52 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from An Epigraphic Commentary on Suetonius's Life of Tiberius The purpose of this thesis is to collect such inscriptions as may either confirm or refute the statements of Suetonius in his Life of Tiberius, and such as may prove of general interest in rela tion to that work. So far as actual historical records are con cerned, I find that Suetonius rarely makes a mistake, but the general unfavorable impression that he gives of the attitude of the Roman world'towards Tiberius is not confirmed by inscrip tions. Although some of the epigraphic records that survive proved an unexpected joy, e. G. That of the sheath and sword of Tiberius found at Mainz, on the other hand there was disap pointment in finding no memorials, e. G. Of Tiberius from Rhodes or Capri, and none of Piso from Syria. Download or read book The Emperor Domitian written by Brian Jones and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2002-09-11 with total page 308 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Domitian, Emperor of Rome AD 81-96, has traditionally been portrayed as a tyrant, and his later years on the throne as a `reign of terror'. Brian Jones' biography of the emperor, the first ever in English, offers a more balanced interpretation of the life of Domitian, arguing that his foreign policy was realistic, his economic programme rigorously efficient and his supposed persecution of the early Christians non-existent. Central to an understanding of the emperor's policies, Brian Jones proposes, is his relationship with his court, rather than with the senate. Roamn historians will have to take account of this new biography which in part represents a rehabilitation of Domitian.
