Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Historical and Critical Discussion of College Admission Requirements IN order to discuss intelligently any problem relative to the American college it is necessary to devote some attention to the unique character of that institution, and to the traditions which determined it. These conditions are most clearly exemplified in the development Of Harvard University. In the first place, Harvard was the first college established on this Side of the Atlantic, and thus became the connecting link in the transit of learning from the Old World to the New. Sec ondly, Harvard was the onlv college in the country for over half a century, and was consequently the most closely identified with the early development of colonial life. Thirdly, Harvard may rightly be called the mother of American colleges, so potent has been her in uence in determining the character Of subsequent colleges and the direction of collegiate study in this country. In short, the history of Harvard College in itself comprises a complete account of the development of American university problems. Download or read book The Culture of Classicism written by Caroline Winterer and published by JHU Press. This book was released on 2004-04-09 with total page 268 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Winner of the New Scholars Book Award from the American Educational Research Association Debates continue to rage over whether American university students should be required to master a common core of knowledge. In The Culture of Classicism: Ancient Greece and Rome in American Intellectual Life, 1780–1910, Caroline Winterer traces the emergence of the classical model that became standard in the American curriculum in the nineteenth century and now lies at the core of contemporary controversies. By closely examining university curricula and the writings of classical scholars, Winterer demonstrates how classics was transformed from a narrow, language-based subject to a broader study of civilization, persuasively arguing that we cannot understand both the rise of the American university and modern notions of selfhood and knowledge without an appreciation for the role of classicism in their creation.

This book was released on 2017-10-17 with total page 200 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Admission to College by Certificate As long as the question of admission to college by certificate 4 is looked upon merely as the formal transfer of individuals from one institution to another, and no more, just so long will the system be adjudged unsatisfactory. The adoption of the system means, usually, the transfer Of responsibility for deter mining standards from the higher to the lower part of the system. The lower part, however willing it may be, is not pre pared to bear the burden alone. The college cannot afford to shift the control of its own standards to high schools unless it is willing to assist the schools in maintaining those standards. Book Teachers Outlines for Studies in English

Download or read book Teachers Outlines for Studies in English written by Gilbert Sykes Blakely and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-12 with total page 180 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Teachers' Outlines for Studies in English: Based on the Requirements for Admission to College The following plans of study for the English texts commonly used in secondary schools are presented in the hope that they may be suggestive to teachers of English who are struggling with the various problems which confront them. Each teacher, of course, must work out his own plan in accordance with the needs of his pupils and the conditions under which he works; but, as it is helpful to observe the class-room work of other teachers, so it may be helpful to see a fellow teachers plans of work. I wish to disclaim any desire to dogmatize about the methods or the details of teaching. If I have anywhere assumed a tone of authority, it has been merely for the sake of brevity in stating my opinions. Three books on the teaching of English have recently appeared: The Teaching of English by Percival Chubb, The Teaching of English by Professors Carpenter, Baker, and Scott, and Talks on Teaching Literature by Arlo Bates. All of these are full of inspiration and suggestion for me as they doubtless are for hundreds of others; they ought to be within reach of every progressive teacher of English. Book The Choice of a College for a Boy Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Choice of a College for a Boy Classic Reprint written by Charles Franklin Thwing and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-12 with total page 44 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Choice of a College, for a Boy Parents too often choose a college for a son without special thought or knowledge. To many people a college is a college, as a spade is a spade. But the slightest reflection, or the most superficial knowledge, is sufficient to produce the conviction that colleges differ as fundamentally as any other products of human skill. Certain institutions that bear the name of college advance the student to no higher stage of learning or culture than other colleges require for admission to their freshman class. It is also evident that too many parents do not select a college with special reference to the conditions or the needs of the son who is going to college. It is often thought that a college good for one boy must be good for all boys. The truth is not that the college which is one boy's meat is another boy's poison, but the truth is that a college good for one boy may be something less than good or even something more than good for another boy. Before beginning the discussion of the elements that should constitute the choice of a college, it is not unfitting for me to say it is always to be understood that to the parent selecting a college for a child the college is a tool and not a product. It is an agent and not a result. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
