Book excerpt: The decay mode of the charged K meson into a charged pion and an electron-positron pair is calculated. It has previously been estimate to occur once in ten million events. An occurrence of one in one hundred thousand events is estimated here. The calculation is only an estimate, for the branching ratio depends upon the (experimentally unknown) pion and kaon form factors, and upon the relative role played by vector and axial-vector weak interaction. Book A Study of Correlations Between Identified Charged Hadrons in Hadronic Z Decays

Download or read book A Study of Correlations Between Identified Charged Hadrons in Hadronic Z Decays written by and published by . This book was released on 1998 with total page 27 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The authors present a preliminary study of correlations in rapidity between pairs of identified pions, kaons and protons in hadronic Z° decays into light flavors. Short range charge correlations are observed between all combinations of these hadron species, confirming that charge, strangeness and baryon number are conserved locally in the jet fragmentation process. The range of this effect is found to be independent of momentum. A strong long-range correlation is observed for high-momentum charged kaon pairs, and weaker long-range [pi]-[pi]−, [pi]-K− and p-K− correlations are observed. The SLC electron beam polarization is used to tag the quark hemisphere in each event, allowing the first study of rapidities signed such that positive rapidity is along the quark rather than antiquark direction. Distributions of signed rapidities and of ordered differences between signed rapidities provide new insights into leading particle production and several new tests of fragmentation models.

Book A Study of Correlations Between Charged Pi K and P in Hadronic Z0 Decays

Download or read book A Study of Correlations Between Charged Pi K and P in Hadronic Z0 Decays written by and published by . This book was released on 2002 with total page 5 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: We present a preliminary study of correlations in rapidity between pairs of identified charged pions, kaons and protons in the SLD data. Details of short-range charge correlations between all combinations of these hadron species are used to study the locality of quantum number conservation, and suggest local charge ordering along the entire hadronization chain. A strong long-range K-K−correlation is observed at high-momentum and weaker long-range [pi]-[pi]−, [pi]+-K− and p-K− and p{bar p} correlations are observed in light flavor events, providing new information on leading particle production in u, d and s jets. The long-range correlations observed in c{bar c} and b {bar b} events are markedly different and consistent with expectations based on known decay properties of the leading heavy hadrons. The SLC electron beam polarization is used to tag the quark hemisphere in each event, allowing the first study of rapidities signed relative to the quark (vs. antiquark) direction. Distributions of ordered, signed rapidity differences provide a new probe of the fragmentation process, including the first direct observation of baryon number ordering along the q 2!{bar q} axis.

Book Femtoscopic Correlations of Identical Charged Pions and Kaons in Pp Collisions at s

Download or read book Femtoscopic Correlations of Identical Charged Pions and Kaons in Pp Collisions at s written by Shreyasi Acharya and published by . This book was released on 2023 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Collective behavior has been observed in high-energy heavy-ion collisions for several decades. Collectivity is driven by the high particle multiplicities that are produced in these collisions. At the Large Hadron Collider (LHC), features of collectivity have also been seen in high-multiplicity proton-proton collisions that can attain particle multiplicities comparable to peripheral Pb-Pb collisions. One of the possible signatures of collective behavior is the decrease of femtoscopic radii extracted from pion and kaon pairs emitted from high-multiplicity collisions with increasing pair transverse momentum. This decrease can be described in terms of an approximate transverse mass scaling. In the present work, femtoscopic analyses are carried out by the ALICE collaboration on charged pion and kaon pairs produced in pp collisions at s√=13 TeV from the LHC to study possible collectivity in pp collisions. The event-shape analysis method based on transverse sphericity is used to select for spherical versus jet-like events, and the effects of this selection on the femtoscopic radii for both charged pion and kaon pairs are studied. This is the first time this selection method has been applied to charged kaon pairs. An approximate transverse-mass scaling of the radii is found in all multiplicity ranges studied when the difference in the Lorentz boost for pions and kaons is taken into account. This observation does not support the hypothesis of collective expansion of hot and dense matter that should only occur in high-multiplicity events. A possible alternate explanation of the present results is based on a scenario of common emission conditions for pions and kaons in pp collisions for the multiplicity ranges studied.

Book Rare Kaon Muon and Pion Decay

Download or read book Rare Kaon Muon and Pion Decay written by and published by . This book was released on 1998 with total page 18 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The author discusses the status of and prospects for the study of rare decays of kaons, muons, and pions. Studies of rare kaon decays are entering an interesting new phase wherein they can deliver important short-distance information. It should be possible to construct an alternative unitarity triangle to that determined in the B sector, and thus perform a critical check of the Standard Model by comparing the two. Rare muon decays are beginning to constrain supersymmetric models in a significant way, and future experiments should reach sensitivities which this kind of model must show effects, or become far less appealing.

Book A Study of Correlations Between Identified Charged Hadrons in Hadronic Z0 Decays

Download or read book A Study of Correlations Between Identified Charged Hadrons in Hadronic Z0 Decays written by and published by . This book was released on 2000 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The authors present a preliminary study of correlations in rapidity between pairs of identified charged pions, kaons and protons using the entire SLD data sample of 550,000 hadronic Z° decays. Short range charge correlations are observed between all combinations of these hadron species, indicating local conservation of quantum numbers and charge ordering in the jet fragmentation process. The rapidity range of this effect is found to be independent of particle momentum. A strong long-range K-K− correlation is observed at high-momentum and weaker long-range pi-pi−, pi+-K− p-K− and p anti-p correlations are observed in light flavor events, providing new information on leading particle production in u, d and s jets. The long-range correlations observed in c anti-c and b anti-b events are markedly different and consistent with expectations based on known decay properties of the leading heavy hadrons. In addition, the SLC electron beam polarization is used to tag the quark hemisphere in each event, allowing the first study of rapidities signed such that positive rapidity is along the quark rather than antiquark direction. Distributions of ordered differences in signed rapidity between pairs of particles provide a direct probe of quantum number ordering along the quark-antiquark axis and other new insights into the fragmentation process.
