Book excerpt: The classic Harmony of the Gospels by J. W. McGarvey and Philip Y. Pendleton with interspersed comments. Attractively re-typeset, this enduring work is a valuable resource to modern Bible students. "In most commentaries a fifth or sixth of the space is taken up in drawing distinctions between the texts of the four Gospels, while in this work these distinctions are placed before the reader's eye, where he can see them for himself at a glance. Moreover, in other commentaries, which give the text, another sixth or seventh of the work is taken up in reprinting in the notes that portion of the text concerning which the commentator wishes to speak. Our interjected method avoids all this needless repetition, and makes it possible for us to present the comment with the least preliminary verbiage or introductory setting. Time is also saved because the reader does not have to look back and forth from the text at the top to the comment at the bottom of the page. Again, other commentaries lose a large amount of space by using the King James text. Those which preceded the revision waste space correcting the translation and modernizing its English: those published since the revision suffer a similar waste by drawing endless comparisons between the two texts. By choosing the American revision as the basis for our work, we have a text which needs but little explanation or apology, and we are thereby enabled to employ the reader's time and strength to his best advantage." --Excerpted from the Introduction

Download or read book A Harmony of the Four Gospels Vol 1 of 2 written by James Macknight and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-19 with total page 542 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Harmony of the Four Gospels, Vol. 1 of 2: In Which the Natural Order of Each Is Preserved, With a Paraphrase and Notes The following Harmony proceeds upon the supposition that the evangelists have not neglected the order of time in their gospels, but have generally related every thing according to the true series of the history. The reasons which support this hypothesis are: That we find the sacred writers often affirming the order of their own narrations; that to transpose them in any instance where they have affirmed their order, would manifestly injure their authority; that in comparing their gospels, the best method of producing a perfect Harmony, is to preserve the thread of their several narrations entire, because seeming contradictions will thus be removed, the whole will be rendered consistent, the credit of the evangelists as historians will be the better secured, and our faith built upon the most solid foundation. The truth is, the advantages arising from this scheme are so many, that all Christians must wish to see it established. That it is not the common method of harmonising the gospels, ought to prejudice no reader against it, seeing it has been espoused by several eminent writers. And though their scheme has been generally neglected, it was not owing so much to any defect in its evidences, as to their having omitted to propose them. The chief argument urged in behalf of transposing many facts contained in the gospel history is, that they have been judged by most people the same, because they resemble one another; and that being told in a different order by the several Evangelists, the series and connection of their narrations must be broken, that their accounts may be brought to agree in point of time. Nevertheless, when it is considered that one transaction may be like another without being the same, there will not appear much strength in this argument. Book The GOSPELS in HARMONY Complete Consolidation Volume II

Download or read book The GOSPELS in HARMONY Complete Consolidation Volume II written by Dale LOVERCHECK and published by . This book was released on 2017-08-20 with total page 142 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: One comprehensive story is presented in each of Volumes I-VII, rather than the four partial stories presented by the four Gospels. All of the verses of the four Gospels are arranged chronologically and in the order presented in the Gospels in each volume. The entire factual and verbal content of the four gospels is retained in each volume. Volumes I and II result from progressively omitting redundancy to consolidate the four stories into one seemless, ordered, complete, concise story of Jesus. The result is something I wanted to see. I trust that you will be blessed. The Single Story, Volume I, is easy to read. One concise story flows from the entire content of the four Gospels. The Complete Consolidation, Volume II, is for readers wanting to refer to the corresponding verses in their bible. Volumes I and II are identical, except that there over 300 heading lines with their verse references in Volume II. While, Volume I has only 30 heading lines, each without verse references. More headings and verse references are helpful for study, but, they can slow the flow of the story. Both of these volumes are insightful, and exceptionally easy to read, compared with trying to find and parse the combined meaning of the corresponding dispersed verses from four separate Gospels. Volume III has most of the facts consolidated for most of the events from all four Gospels. Volume IV has all of the verses presented chronologically and grouped by each events from all four Gospels. Volumes III and IV show the progression from four sets of verses from four Gospels to one harmonized story.Redundancy is completely omitted in Volumes I and II. The similarity to original separate verses increases, and redundancy progressively increases, as you move from Volume III to Volume IV. Each step in this progression is readily validated by side by side comparison with the corresponding KJV verses in Volumes V, and with the corresponding WEB verses in VI, and VII.Series of Volumes:Volume I The Gospels in Harmony, Single Story Volume II The Gospels in Harmony, Complete Consolidation,Volume III The Gospels in Harmony, Major Consolidation,Volume IV The Gospels in Harmony, Intermediate Consolidation, Volume V The Gospels in Harmony, Complete Consolidation & KJV Verses side by side. Book Phrase By Phrase Harmony of the Gospels

Download or read book Phrase By Phrase Harmony of the Gospels written by James Cummins and published by Createspace Independent Publishing Platform. This book was released on 2016-09-01 with total page 234 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: (This is Volume 2 of a three-volume set.) The Phrase-by-Phrase Harmony of the Gospels presents a visual, side-by-side arrangement of every phrase of the books of Matthew, Mark, Luke and John, in chronological order. Building on the foundation of centuries of great Bible scholarship, this is a new and unique approach to studying the events of the gospels in detailed chronological order. Rather than presenting entire passages from Matthew, Mark, Luke and John in whole paragraphs, this harmony permits the reader to compare each individual fact and detail side by side in table format. Every phrase of every gospel is aligned side by side with the corresponding phrases in the other gospels. Each event of the gospels includes its own geographical map and graphical timeline to assist the reader in keeping track of where and when each event occurred, along with archaeological or historical notes wherever applicable. For each event, a blended narrative is provided, which contains every fact and detail of all four gospels merged into a single, readable, chronological account. Author commentary clarifies difficult or problematic texts. An appendix contains cross-referenced lists to enable the reader to quickly locate any passage of scripture in the Harmony. While this series makes an excellent devotional guide for individual daily Bible reading, it is extremely well suited for Bible study groups who meet weekly, due to its section-by-section, bite-sized approach to a complete read-through of the gospels. The book is approachable and easy to use, but also sufficiently technical to be helpful to pastors, teachers and professors as a reference book or supplementary college text.

  • Author : St. Augustine of Hippo

Download or read book The Harmony Of The Gospels written by St. Augustine of Hippo and published by Jazzybee Verlag. This book was released on 2012 with total page 377 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the extended and annotated edition including * an extensive biographical annotation about the author and his life Book I. The treatise opens with a short statement on the subject of the authority of the Evangelists, their number, their order, and the different plans of their narratives. Augustine then prepares for the discussion of the questions relating to their harmony, by joining issue in this book with those who raise a difficulty in the circumstance that Christ has left no writing of His own, or who falsely allege that certain books were composed by Him on the arts of magic. He also meets the objections of those who, in opposition to the evangelical teaching, assert that the disciples of Christ at once ascribe more to their Master than He really was, when they affirmed that He was God, and inculcated what they had not been instructed in by Him, when they interdicted the worship of the gods. Against these antagonists he vindicates the teaching of the Apostles, by appealing to the utterances of the Prophets, and by showing that the God of Israel was to be the sole object of worship, who also, although He was the only Deity to whom acceptance was denied in former times by the Romans, and that for the very reason that He prohibited them from worshipping other gods along with Himself, has now in the end made the Empire of Rome subject to His Name, and among all nations has broken their idols in pieces through the preaching of the Gospel, as He had promised by His prophets that the event should be. Book II. In this book Augustine undertakes an orderly examination of the Gospel according to Matthew, on to the narrative of the Supper, and institutes a comparison between it and the other Gospels by Mark, Luke, and John, with the view of demonstrating a complete harmony between the four Evangelists throughout all these sections. Book III. This book contains a demonstration of the harmony of the Evangelists from the accounts of the Supper on to the end of the Gospel, the narratives given by the several writers being collated, and the whole arranged in one orderly connection. Book IV. This book embraces a discussion of those passages which are peculiar to Mark, Luke, or John.
