Book excerpt: In a time when folklore and superstition are prevalent and animal spirits are totem guides, the Kingdom of Durundal can be a mysterious place - and for a child who is different, it can be cruel. Ajeya is a girl with a secret when she is banished into the wilderness by her father, Emperor Gnaeus of Ataxata. Close to death and sheltered by her mother, she is found and accepted by the clans who give her protection for many years - until the day a rumble can be heard in the distance and an enemy breaches the horizon intent on death and destruction - but who or what do they want? Facing an army with unfathomable strength and resources, the situation is hopeless......or is it?If you like realistic personalities and well crafted worlds then you will love A Hare in the Wilderness - a tale of those who refuse to give up and surrender - a tale of those who face their fears and conquer. With strong, resilient characters in Ajeya and Keao, and others whom are less forgiving like the Emperor and his henchman the General; you are drawn into a story of love, strength and honour. For this is the Kingdom of Durundal, where those darkest secrets of the unknown test even the bravest souls. -Book 1 in the Kingdom of Durundal series--Review from amazon.comThis is probably one of the best-written books I've ever read, the descriptions were so beautiful, the words were poetic. The author really has an amazing way with words. What is more, the plot is also as captivating. Ajeya is cast aside by her father, the Emperor because she has a disfigurement by birth. The story begins with her telling her tale of strength, love, and courage as she fights the prejudices of the people and slowly realizes who she is, the heir to the Empire of Ataxata. Characters were well developed, so likable, from Dainn to Hagen and Keao and many others. Such a heartwarming beautiful story that should appeal to all ages. I'm looking forward to reading the second book in the series.

Download or read book A Year in the Wilderness written by Amy Freeman and published by . This book was released on 2017 with total page 320 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since its establishment as a federally protected wilderness in 1964, the Boundary Waters has become one of our nation's most valuable--and most frequently visited--natural treasures. When Amy and Dave Freeman learned of toxic mining proposed within the area's watershed, they decided to take action--by spending a year in the wilderness, and sharing their experience through video, photos, and blogs with an audience of hundreds of thousands of concerned citizens. This book tells thedeeper story of their adventure in northern Minnesota: of loons whistling under a moonrise, of ice booming as it forms and cracks, of a moose and her calf swimming across a misty lake. With the magic--and urgent--message that has rallied an international audience to the campaign to save the Boundary Waters, A Year in the Wilderness is a rousing cry of witness activism, and a stunning tribute to this singularly beautiful region.

Book excerpt: * 2021 Vermont Book Award, Winner. * 2021 New England Book Awards, Finalist. * A3C Reads: March 2023 Book of the Month. "A Most Anticipated Book of 2021" —Elle, Bustle, BuzzFeed, Vulture The Hare is an affecting portrait of Rosie Monroe, of her resilience and personal transformation under the pin of the male gaze. Raised to be obedient by a stern grandmother in a blue-collar town in Massachusetts, Rosie accepts a scholarship to art school in New York City in the 1980s. One morning at a museum, she meets a worldly man twenty years her senior, with access to the upper crust of New England society. Bennett is dashing, knows that “polo” refers only to ponies, teaches her which direction to spoon soup, and tells of exotic escapades with Truman Capote and Hunter S. Thompson. Soon, Rosie is living with him on a swanky estate on Connecticut’s Gold Coast, naively in sway to his moral ambivalence. A daughter—Miranda—is born, just as his current con goes awry forcing them to abscond in the middle of the night to the untamed wilderness of northern Vermont. Almost immediately, Bennett abandons them in an uninsulated cabin without a car or cash for weeks at a time, so he can tend a teaching job that may or may not exist at an elite college. Rosie is forced to care for her young daughter alone, and to tackle the stubborn intricacies of the wood stove, snowshoe into town, hunt for wild game, and forage in the forest. As Rosie and Miranda’s life gradually begins to normalize, Bennett’s schemes turn malevolent, and Rosie must at last confront his twisted deceptions. Her actions have far-reaching and perilous consequences. An astounding new literary thriller from a celebrated author at the height of her storytelling prowess, The Hare bravely considers a woman’s inherent sense of obligation—sexual and emotional—to the male hierarchy, and deserves to be part of our conversation as we reckon with #MeToo and the Brett Kavanaugh Supreme Court confirmation hearing. Rosie Monroe emerges as an authentic, tarnished feminist heroine.

Download or read book Brand vs Wild written by Jonathan David Lewis and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-04-21 with total page 144 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Today’s business leaders operate in an increasingly harsh environment. Uncertainty in the economy causes paralysis. Quarterly goals drive short-term and shortsighted decisions. Workforce mobility kills loyalty. Iconic products decline as fast as start-ups create new categories. And the pressure to do more with less, combined with the multiplicity of available marketing tools and technology, can be overwhelming. Now more than ever, brands and the people who lead them need clarity and guidance. The good news is that people have found ways to thrive in harsh environments for millennia. Author Jonathan David Lewis, combining the lessons of group survival dynamics with more than a decade of proprietary research into the factors that cause companies to lose their way, shows leaders how to thrive in unforgiving business environments by learning to: Focus on navigating risk instead of trying to measure or reduce it. Cultivate your brand’s will to live by staying positive and asking the most important question: Are you worth it? Read the brand signs by observing the market, keeping an eye on performance measures, engaging your team, and listening to your gut. Develop a concept of "mission" to ensure internal alignment and reduce friction. Act with urgency rather than waiting for the right circumstance. Brand vs. Wild helps readers understand the wilderness in which they find their companies and identify the specific steps they must take to thrive in the Brand Wilderness. There is hope in a harsh business world. And Brand vs. Wild is it.
